The Bears have Cutler under control for 3 more years, and Im 100% positive Angelo will lock Cutler up for a long time sooner or later. Angelo knows if he would let the Bears 1st franchise QB in years walk away, that he might as well follow right behind him. Angelo would be eaten alive if Cutler walks away from this team.

I think you're right, but Cutler is going to be amazingly expensive. Rivers is very likely to get a larger contract than Eli did and if Cutler has a good to great season and leads the Bears into (or especially deep into) the playoffs, he'll probably get more than Rivers.

He'll be worth it, though.

Under Angelo, the Bears routinely approach players during season about extensions, writing new deals for center Olin Kreutz, defensive end Alex Brown and [expletive] Jason McKie, among others, in recent years. The goal is to apply surplus cap room to the books of the current year. If they don’t pursue Cutler, tight end Greg Olsen could potentially meet them at the bargaining table.

What does Brad Biggs have against Jason McKie?

He must just hold a grudge against full-backs for some reason. :-))

It will be interesting. I don't necessarily know that Rivers gets a bigger contract than Eli. Rivers is the better QB, but Eli has a ring. You can say the D and Plax led Eli to a title, but Rivers couldn't get there with a similarly strong defense and the best RB of this generation, LT. On one hand Eli, Roethlisberger, and Brady got big deals because of titles (Brady did prove to be great after winning). But guys like Peyton and Vick got big deals based on their talent. Rivers isn't as elite as Manning is leading an offense. He's not Vick athletically. And he doesn't have a ring. I wouldn't be surprised if despite being the better QB, Rivers doesn't get as much as Eli. I'd imagine Cutler will get whatever Rivers gets though.

Did anyone listen to the Bears special tonight on the Score? They had Olsen, Forte, and Cutler on and at one point they were talking about Forte graduating college. Somehow he turned it on Olsen and said something to the effect of Miami doesn't even have a campus........do they? I was rolling!

spending a lot of money on cutler is probably just as good as spending a lot of money on 4-5 pretty good defensive players.

I'm actually a bigger Eli fan than many are, but Rivers is far and away the better QB to this point. That said, you are correct that Eli's ring plays a big part in how much money he got and Rivers not having one lessens his side's leverage.

In purely internal negotiations, the Chargers might be able to re-sign him for less than Eli got. However, if he got to the open market, he'd be very likely to surpass Eli's deal once the bidding ended. With the superior stats, he can hold out for the bigger deal with the option of hitting free agency after the season. That might be enough to push the Chargers' offer over what the Giants gave Eli.

It will be interesting to see the kind of deal he gets. I certainly think it will be close to Eli's, even if it's a little less.

Yeah, as good and as young as Cutler is, it's going to be hard to use the money he'd get any more effectively. Especially considering if you don't bring him back, you just have to find another QB.

Funny...the board software has always had an issue with Fullback

Yea I wasnt sure if UM was being serious or not.

But Biggs is right. Expletive McKie.

If you think Jay Cutler is worth as much if not more than Phillip Rivers, you should have your head examined.

After the 2009 season you are going to wish you never made this statement.

Care to explain why?

One of the rookies who has been flying under the radar is sixth-round draft pick Al Afalava. But he might not be under the radar for much longer.

Afalava took some reps with the first team at strong safety Thursday while Kevin Payne took a breather because of soreness in his lower leg and hamstring. Some veterans have been impressed with Afalava's intensity.

1) A safety surprise would be welcome.

2) I shall forever call him Alfalfa.

Orton was booed by the crowd of 13,402 — the largest crowd ever to watch a Broncos practice — when he was picked off twice by free agent cornerback Andre’ Goodman the second of which was returned for a long touchdown. Orton, who also was jeered when he threw behind wide receiver Chad Jackson, said afterward it was the crowd’s prerogative to let the Broncos know how they felt.

Yeah, that town isn't going to let them forget that they unloaded a franchise QB right as he was entering his prime. I'd be booing too. Probably for several years.

Rivers career: 62.3 comp %; 78:36 TD:INT; 12.0 y/c; 92.9 QB rating

Cutler career: 62.5 comp %; 54:37 TD:INT; 11.8 y/c; 87.1 QB rating

Rivers has been better, but he's also 2 years older than Cutler is. If Cutler has a good to great season for the Bears, he at 26 years old will definitely get as large or larger a contract than Rivers at 28 years old.

Rivers played on a team with a lot better defense too. Rivers wasn't playing catchup as often as Cutler, and therefore didn't have nearly the number of endgame INT's as Cutler. Though admittedly, I doubt that kind of detail will go into evaluation for a contract.

The defense relative to the players could play a small part, I think. Cutler's TD:INT ratio will be offset by the fact that he's two years younger than Rivers.
