I think Rashied Davis is gonna have a hard time making this team...

Hester, Bennett - Locks

Rideau seems like a lock at this point given how much Cutler seems to like him and the fact that he's slotted #3

Iglesias, Knox - Draft picks this year...they'll make the team

Not a lot of room

And Jay doesn't seem to talk much about him. I feel kinda bad for him even though he sucks...he did make some big catches in 06... but I still would rather not have him on the team.

Which brings up an interesting point. The Bears will be facing more 3-4 because of the Packers, but acquiring Cutler would seem to be a good answer to that, because he has seen that defensive alignment quite a bit in the AFC.

In his interview with Mulley and Hanley the other day, he guessed that he might have seen more 3-4 than 4-3.

Last year, Cutler faced 3-4 defenses from: San Diego (twice), New England, Miami, Cleveland, and NY Jets. 3 games w/ rating over 90. 2 with ratings under 70. One in the middle. His bad games coming against the 2 best defenses, his good ones coming against the worst defenses.

In 2007, he faced only SD twice and Pittsburgh. In those games he turned in the worst performance of the year and a mediocre game vs. SD. But he also turned in what I think was the best game I have ever seen him play vs. a very good Pit defense going 22-27 w/ 3 TDs (2 INTs) and 41 rushing yards in a comeback win.

So, Cutler hasn't had nearly as many games vs. the 3-4 as he thinks and it has come w/ mixed results.

I think he's safe for one more season. Many argued all off season that the Bears needed a veteran WR. Well, Rashied is as close to that as it gets. If the Bears cut Rashied, they have essentially a roster of 4 rookie WRs (as Bennett and Rideau have had 0 catches between them in probably less than 30 plays on the field between them) and Hester who has played 1 season as a full-time WR. I think the Bears will keep 6 WRs, first of all. Secondly, I think they keep Davis around because he does provide some experience and special teams ability. Davis also has shown he can be servicable as a slot WR, more than anyone else on the roster. I don't see the harm in keeping him on, starting him off as the 3 or 4 WR and easing him out of the regular rotation as Iglesias, Rideau and Knox get more comfortable with the playbook.

i think that catch against the seahawks was probably the biggest catch in bears history. not best, mind you, but most important.

Maybe in the last 40 years. The Bears have won what 9 world titles in their history? So a catch to seal a win in the 2nd round of a 4 round tournament, a tournament the Bears ultimately didn't win can't be the biggest. I do agree that it was bigger than any catch made in 85 and before that the last time the Bears advanced to the championship game was in the 60s.

As far as Orton not getting treated as badly as Rex, there's 2 reasons I think.

One is expectations. Rex was a first round draft pick. Kyle was what...4th or 5th round?

And the other is Orton filling in as a rookie and keep the Bears successful enough to win the division and make the playoffs, even if it was Rex that finished the season. It bought him a lot of leeway.

you're also talking about a time where very little passing was done.

It looks like Cutler is taking a liking (has mentioned him in a few interviews and has thrown the ball quite a bit to him lately) to Devin A. also. If he makes the roster, Rashied would have to be the odd man out.

I think Cutler really has a say in this and he really hasn't talked up Davis much at all.

2) I’m sorry to report I missed one of Jay Cutler’s snaps during 11-on-11 drills. Presuming he didn’t throw an incompletion on that play, Cutler was perfect with the exception of Brandon Rideau’s drop on a medium-deep ball. In order, Cutler clicked with Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Hester, Rideau, Devon Aromashodu (a sweet grab where he had to leap and reach behind him for a laser), Aromashodu, Bennett, Greg Olsen, Jason McKie and Rideau.

This does little to dispute the notion that Cutler isn't really looking Davis's way much (if he's even in there with him).

Who the hell is Devin Aromashodu?

A guy Rece Davis really liked when he was at Auburn.

7th round pick a few years ago, got a handful of receptions with the Colts a couple years ago.

I can't say I would really be upset if Davis was cut. He seems like a nice guy to me. And I know he's been the first player out on the practice field some days, working on quick catching the ball directly from the kickoff machine. I think he gets it -- his hands are in question.

But, the NFL is brutal. If the coaches and QB feel they are more comfortable with someone else, it's going to be tough.

I wouldn't be surprised to see someone else take a look at him if he is cut.

Also, don't forget that Cutler is the Sunday Conversation on SportsCenter tonight. I think the interview is already available on ESPN.com.

The Bears almost signed former Raider QB Andrew Walter. I wonder if the Bears are not liking what they've seen from Haine (whom they have been high on for so long) and Basenez (however you spell his name) or is this a ploy by the Bears to motivate both QB to step up?

"I've been impressed with Kyle's arm," second-year receiver Eddie Royal said. "He's overthrown me a couple times in practice. I think his arm is strong enough for what we're trying to do."

For some reason, this struck me as pretty funny. Bragging about overthrows.

On an unrelated note, if you cut and paste from CNNSI, it adds a link to the story in the clipboard when you paste. Weird.

More talk about Tommie Harris and his health today on the radio.

Now I'm starting to get a tad worried.

Now I'm starting to get a tad worried.

What's the talk?

If it's not based on some new development that I haven't heard yet, people have been trying to make something out of nothing (especially MacNeil) with that for a while. It's known that Tommie Harris has a bad knee. Who doesn't know this? This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I don't know why people are at all surprised that they're giving him a very light workload. If he was hurt, they wouldn't have even have him doing the individual work he's doing.

I suppose if those guys were under some kind of delusion that Tommie was truly healthy and didn't have a bum knee, then I can see why they're worried. He's not the same guy. They're going to have to take whatever precautions they can to have him be a productive player for the rest of his career.

I heard it from Holmes this morning. They're saying that they see him limping around. I don't know. I didn't see that while I was there, but that was over a week ago. I don't think Holmes is delusional to the point where he thinks Tommie is supposed to be like he was when he came out of college. I've generally thought of his Bear reports as a bit above many of the others.

And the guy played by far more snaps than anyone on that line last year.

And from what I've been reading, Marinielli is talking about his explosion off the line.

Of course, I can't find that now...:P
