Talk about picking the lesser of two evils.

How is Adam Dunn an "evil"? "Flawed, but still good" would be my description.

How much of an influence over Aramis's throws does Lee's size and relative agility make? I seem to recall some saying that A-Ram is a better fielder partly because he has Lee as his target. Is this the conventional wisdom and is it accurate?

And people complain about Dunn's bad D.

The Harry Caray statue would have better OF range than Barry Bonds would at this point.

Whatever you guys want to believe, no team is gonna sign Bonds.

I'm still a little surprised an AL team hasn't put their conscience on the back burner to sign him as a DH. I agree that no NL team would seriously consider him, though.

My only concern with Bonds is the shape he may be in having sat out an entire year at his age.

If at 44 he could put up this line 276/480/565 in 120 games, I'd move Soriano to right and Bonds could hop around on a pogo stick for all I care.

He's probably not in good shape after mostly sitting around for the last , and he'll turn 45 next season. He wouldn't put up anything near that line.

He's also going to trial for obstruction of justice in March, so there's that minor inconvenience as well.

I'm still not entirely convinced that it isn't a conspiracy.

There are very few things I wouldn't do to see the Cubs win the World Series. Signing Barry Bonds is one of those things.

Pretty much sums up my feelings. As I've said in the thread last year it would make me question supporting the Cubs while he's on the team. If we were to win the WS with him I would forever be stuck with Bonds as the symbol of ending our curse. I would rather shoot myself in the leg Plaxico style.

Wouldn't shock me in the least if it was.

Or, it could just be a bunch of conservative owners not wanting to piss off their fan base (which the fans mostly would be until Bonds started producing like crazy). If he didn't produce immediately, the owner could risk taking a massive hit.

If Fukudome tanks and we haven't signed anything better for RF, I'd totally get behind Bonds. Just stick Felix Pie in center and tell him he plays the new position of "CF-RF". :-))

fwiw, pizza argues the Giants really didn't have much of a dropoff from Bonds to Lewis last year

Well, lets do the same thing with UZR and wOBA instead of BRAA and OPA! and keep the baserunning stat Pizza Cutter used.

2007 Bonds

Btting=+39.5

Fielding=-8.0

Baserunning=-1.52

=30

2008 Lewis

Batting=+8.4

Fielding=+5.6

Baserunning=+4.92

=19

Not nearly as close as Pizza Cutter has, but still worth the difference in salary (and headache).

Of course, the big problem in Pizza Cutter's reasoning is that Lewis's 2008 was pretty darn lucky (367 BABIP on an 18.4 LD%) and definitely better than what should have been expected.

This has always been my opinion. I really think there is some gentleman's agreement around the league not to sign him - I think MLB just wants to move on and forget he ever existed for now.

I don't think they set out and said no one sign Bonds. I think they all talked about if they would ever pursue him and they all brought up the reason why they wouldn't. The reason why you would is because he can hit but at the same time he's very old so he might fall off. I think they pretty much came to the same conclusion but not because they some set out to have it happen.

But no one knows nor will ever know.

But that still doesnt explain why some AL team wouldn't throw him a small contract to see if he could continue to produce in a DH role.

The reason why the wouldn't far out weighed why they would. He's a malcontent and a PR nightmare. Whoever signs him would immediately have team chemistry issues because i think you would be hard pressed to find one clubhouse where no one hated him. Also every fan would immediately by on the war path and anything else bad happening and you could lose a lot of the fan base.
