I assume I'm in the minority in believing that Marquis, despite his inflated salary, is a fine #5 starter. He is not nearly as bad as some want to make him out to be. You have to classify Harden and Zambrano as injury risks to some degree, Marquis then becomes a pretty important piece.

If the Cubs can somehow improve by trading him then do it, but I don't think he has to be moved, or the Cubs will be unsuccessful if he's pitching every fifth day.

At this point they probably have to get a guy like Peavy in order to move Marquis.

However, like leadoff, #5 starter isn't a position. And you can't deflect the negative value of his salary vs his performance. He's an overpaid mediocre 5th starter and because of poor planning Hendry will have to pay somebody else to take him off their hands.

I agree about the #5 thing, but I guess the point I was trying to make was that the rotation is still pretty strong as is, with Marquis.

It's "pretty strong", but the Cubs can be the best team in the league and should be the best team they can. I want them to have the best chance possible to win it all, and improvements are necessary for that. I don't just want to be one of the teams in the mix.

or you can just keep him around and let him throw a bunch of league-average innings. considering that two of the starters are rich harden and carlos zambrano, i don't think it's a good idea to just sell off a guy like marquis because nobody likes him.

Tonight, on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove, Heyman added:

“Marquis is a good number five starter, he’ll throw innings, he wins in double digits – you know, it makes sense and I think it’ll will get done. I know Omar is saying it will be later and a long shot… I think the later part is right, but this makes too much sense. The Cubs are pushing on the Mets right now, but eventually I think the they will do this deal.”

Allegedly the Mets would send a middle reliever back? I know we want to dump Marquis' salary, but he does have some value.

At this point, I really dont see the point in moving Marquis. With the Peavy deal dead, we dont need to move the salary anymore even if we do want a bat. ,love or hate him, OK, hate him or hate him less, as I doubt anyone really loves him, we may very well need him. Even if the do project a Z/Harden/Lilly/Demp/Marshall rotation, we all know that even if Harden manages to go un injuredm they will want to keep him ina glass case, and skip his spot when possible. Thats when you need that extra starter, and theres no point in moving half of Marquis money when you'll have to then turn around and sign a guy for the same amount or more. Of course there is....Rich Hill

Yeah, I think they might need to keep him around, given the current roster. But if they can bring in a better starter they can afford to get rid of him.

Marquis for Schoenweiss would be a good deal for the cubs. Schoenweiss would be a good loogy and if the cubs didn't have to send any money they'd free up about 6M

The Mets just traded Schoenweis to the Dbacks for a minor league pitcher, he was rumored to potentially be involved in a Marquis deal. This could either mean that a deal with the Mets might not happen or maybe the Mets could be looking to drop some payroll to make room for Marquis as Schoenweis was due to make $3.6 mil. this year.

I doubt the Mets are saving much money sending Schoenwiess to the DBacks. That team is broke. About the only way the DBacks take him on is if the Mets picked up more than half of that contract.

Some program on XM's MLB Home Plate interviewed Marquis today (proof that it must be really hard to find enough programming in the offseason):

Marquis said that he wanted to remain a Cub, but he knows it's a business.

Rockies and Mets were talked about primarily as possible teams he could be dealt to, and he wouldn't mind the Mets being from NY himself, etc. Wants to stay in the NL because he like's the "style of the game" and hitting.

He reiterated once again that he just "wanted the ball every fifth day" regardless of where he plays next year. It didn't sound like he'd be open to pitching in the pen if the Cubs add another starter, but that's just me speculating.

In my opinion, he sounded like he was waiting on a phone call any minute to tell him he's been traded. Hopefully if he is traded, someone is desperate enough to pick up most of the money he's due next season.

Bruce Levine and Carmen DeFalco discussed Jason Marquis briefly on Saturday morning. The Story breaker dropped a 'little tidbit'.... Rumors during the Winter Meetings suggested Kevin Towers had identified a team that he could flip Jason Marquis to once he received Marquis, and cash, from the Cubs for Jake Peavy. According to Bruce Levine that team was the Milwaukee Brewers.

Levine said Towers had a deal in place to receive two pitching prospects from the Brewers for Marquis. The Brewers are apparently very interested in Marquis...especially if the Cubs are paying between $4 to $6 million dollars of his salary for next season.

that would have been weird

The Brewers have been talking to the yankees about Cameron and where told they needed to take Igawa from the Yankees also but balked about taking back the 4m. If the price is right Marquis should be a guy that interests the Mets.

The Mets are interested but I think they're waiting to see how the market shapes up.
