If Dempster is signed I hope this doesn't remove the Cubs from the Peavy/Johnson talks .

Peavy, no.

Johnson, yes.

They still have to address the RF, , bullpen, backup C, poss. the bench if they don't feel comfortable with Hoffpaiur.

I'm for it as well...With Peavy anything but a sure thing the rotation needs to be taken care of. I hope if there's more money they can focus on paying someone like Furcal or Bradley, or trading for Hermida.

I heard this in a sports update at around 6:20, they just said Dempster will make his decision on the Cubs offer. Saying Dempster was going to sign didn't mean he was going to sign with us, it just means he will sign with somebody. I assume the Cubs offer is their final offer, so Dempster will either accept or reject that. If Dempster rejects this offer, and signs with another team. Then I think the Cubs will work harder to get a Peavy deal done, but If Dempster resigns the Cubs probably move on from Peavy. Lets all hope Dempster decides to go for the money, and leaves.

I'll reserve judgment until I see the years and the dollars.

Likewise.

So much for Peavy. I don't like the move personally, especially if it's for a 4 or 5 yr deal.

There's no reason to believe the Cubs won't explore trading for Jake Peavy, especially since all signs point to the two teams trying to work out a deal still in the midst of this Dempster signing news.

With the latest quote from Towers, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about the Cubs landing Peavy. If they do in fact sign Dempster and do in fact trade for Peavy, all other issues will probably have to be resolved through more trades. Surely they can't have more money to spend after acquiring these two on a FA RF'er?

hopefully he gave us a nice discount (if we're the team he's signing with). if it's not too bad, then im for it. it doesn't completely eliminate us from the peavy trade talks, but it also doesn't handcuff us if a deal can't be made. i'm not sure the peavy deal can get done without including pie, vitters, marshall, and more, and honestly i'm not sure if i wanna give up all that when we're gonna need some pieces to still trade for an impact bat.

If the Cubs do end up resigning Dempster, I think we will still talk to the Padres about Peavy and try to something out. But if we're gonna fit him in our budget next year, were gonna have to trade Marquis(and get at least 6m off the books), and add a cheap RF like Hermida. But if we decide to sign someone like say Abreu, Bradley or Ibanez we can't afford Peavy to.

reading between the lines here..it appears the Peavy deal is as good as done IMO. Any package for Peavy will have to include Carlos Marmol and highly sough after relieve ace Kevin Hart. Dempster will now be switched back to the closers role, and a package of Carlos Marmol, Kevin Hart, and Kevin Gregg will be sent to the Padres who willl leverage this trio to replace Trevor Hoffman.

I hope that Dempster doesn't sign with the Cubs. He had a career year during his FA year, let him go and get big money somewhere else. The last thing the Cubs need is to be stuck with another $10MM pitcher for another 4 years.

That's crazy. Where would you get this idea from?

All this report means is Dempster could decide who he's going to sign with soon. When Levine said Dempster was going to sign in the next 48 hours, that doesn't mean he's a lock to sign with us. He's just going to resign with somebody, and I'm sure has bigger offers on the table.

A career year @ 32, an 11-year ERA of 4.55 & WHIP of 1.49. I'm very thankful that he was able to lead us to a division title this year, but there's a significant regression from last year in store for Dempster.

Marquis has a 9-year ERA of 4.55 & 1.43 WHIP.

If I had fifty cents in my pocket to bet, I'd bet that Dempster leaves if he can find a team to give him a fifth year at similar dollars per year. I don't think he'll leave for a million or two more per year over four.
