Is anyone else feeling that this seems to be a ton to give up for Peavy?quote]

not if we give Vitters, Pie, Cedeno, Marshall, and Hart -

now if we give up Derosa too w/out getting something back(other than dumping Marquis) I wouldn't like if nearly as much. Dero is my favorite player though so my judgement may be a bit clouded

Vitters is the only other one that is hard to trade as he could end up being a great player in a few years - I still think Pie has a hot to be very good but it is not going to happen here and the Cubs have ruined his trade value

Fell asleep watching ESPN 2 last night and woke up to Mike and Mike saying Peavy to the Cubs and shot up in bed as they went to a commercial... the bottom update bar kept going through the commercial and it only said Hendry said they are "close".

But I guess it's a good thing ESPN and MLB.com are reporting it now?

And I don't mean ESPN.com I mean it actually scrolling on the update bar or whatever they call it.

If the Cubs give up Marquis AND Derosa, could they afford Peavy, Furcal and Bradley? Peavy's salary basically = Derosa and Marquis, assuming the Cubs pay $4M to whoever takes Marquis.

If not, do the Cubs still have enough talent to get a cheap RF like Hermida?

If not, does 2b/SS become a priority over RF?

I honestly dont believe that JH will be given the go ahead to spend any more money if this deal goes down. Maybe for something cheap, like Edmonds.

As for Hermida, I highly, highly doubt that we'll have the young talent to trade for anything of use after this deal goes down. If Pie, Marshall, Cedeno, Atkins, Castillo, and Vitters are all invloved as rumored, we're pretty much out of tradeable assets. Granted, we still have some prospects that would be interesting throw ins, but there will be nothing left as a main pieve to build around.

I agree that we probably won't have the talent to pull Hermida, but people don't understand what's going on for Peavy. Pie, Marshall, Cedeno, Atkins, Castillo, and Vitters are all names that are in play and have been thrown about in various configurations for Peavy, but I have yet to see anything that suggests all 6 have ever been entertained as being together in the same package at the same time. Just because three names are together in one package, then you hear another three names doesn't mean that all 6 could be moving out at the same time. The highest number that I've heard at one time is a 5 for 1. I could be wrong, but I don't think Marshall will be included if there is a total of 5 players involved. If the Phils jump in with Happ for DeRosa, I have to think that number goes down to 3 or 4 instead of 5. I don't think there's any chance we give up all 6 of those guys unless we get back more than Peavy.

The thought of trading DeRosa scares the daylights out of me. Fontenot has been great in selected spots but has he shown enough to be an everyday 2B? RF with some aging, crippled vet (Abreu, Ibanez, Bradley) is going to need an adequate sub along with LF (Soriano) who seems to visit the DL yearly. Also, ARam needs a decent backup for his occasional injury. I'm hoping that somewhere in this deal the Cubs can get another usable piece (Scott from O's, Hairston from Padres, etc.).

Well, if DeRosa goes that's going to hurt. Then again, we have to be realists. You have to give up value to get value. And Peavy is sure freaking value.

At least, for once, we'd be selling high on Mark. I've got as much of a man crush on him as anyone else, but I think we can all agree that last season very well could have been his career year.

And on the bright side, if he goes to Philly at least we're not sending him to a crap team. Like poor Pie and whoever has to go to Petco.

Can't wait to see the next turn in this saga.

Exactly. The only reason I wouldn't be sad about giving up Dero would be that it's highly likely that last year was a career year. I like Dero a lot, but if it's going to land us Jake Peavy, I'll be okay with it. Even though I don't think Peavy will be as good outside of Petco, he's still one of the best pitchers in the game.

I'll be ecstatic to give up DeRosa IF it enables us to get Peavy while keeping Marshall. I think that means Cedeno isn't going anywhere though if DeRosa is dealt. How long do they have to decide whether to tender Ronny or not?

... Because the thread has similarities....

What if DeRosa going means that Baltimore is even more involved than we thought and We get Brian Roberts too. :D

Dont be so sure. Until going to Texas, DeRosa was a career utility player. Once he became an everyday starter, hes been getting progressively better. Im not saying hes going to become A Rod, but I woultnt be surprised if he continues to put up numbers similar to last year, especially in his contract year.

And if he does that I'm not sure we'd be able to afford to keep him beyond said contract year anyway.

If we have to move DeRosa to keep Marshall AND make Jason Marquis play somewhere else AND get Jake Peavy you kind of have to do it. And hope like hell that Fontenot's season wasn't an aberration.

Definitely. I don't want DeRo to go anywhere, but if the deal makes sense then you HAVE to pull the trigger. Please happen quick so I can shift my focus back to the Woot Off.

rosenthal might have updated that blog unless I didn't see yesterday. He has one cubs source saying that while deros name has come up, so has around 20 others.

Marquis seems immovable to me. I'd rather not have him, but he won't kill us as a # 5 starter. The Mets need starting pitching. After acquiring Peavy, how about this scenario...

Zambrano and Theriot to the Mets for Reyes.

But I think the point is that, at least based on what we heard from the media, the deal doesn't HAVE to involved getting rid of DeRosa.

Damn Marquis and his stupid contract and his big nose for holding things up.Someone please take him

Wait until you see what Peavy's contract does to us toward the end.

Yea except we'll be paying for Jake Freaking Peavy.

Well, if that's his name, then surely you can project how good he'll be in four seasons with strong confidence.

"Surely" you can project he will suck at the end of his deal.

Really?

His last 5 seasons:

Year ERA ERA+

2004 2.27 171

2005 2.88 134

2006 4.09 99

2007 2.54 159

2008 2.85 134

He had one season that was clearly a fluke, are we really going to argue his worth?

I may be mis-remembering (and it also could be nothing), but aren't there concerns over the health of his elbow?
