I've heard talk that the Tennessee job is one of the top 10 jobs in the nation - and I don't disagree with it.

Ohio St.

Alabama

You could make the argument that it's as good or better than the FSU and Penn State jobs. Alabama has more tradition, but I believe UT has better facilities, stadium and recruiting budget. It'd be close between those two.

At absolute worst, it's top 15.

It's a silly subjective argument, but I could argue them out of the top 15 with Notre Dame, Miami, Oklahoma St.(CASH), VA Tech, and Nebraska

It is very subjective, but the fact remains Tennessee is in the conversation and is higher on the list than Texas Tech or North Carolina - thus, there's the possibility of interest from Davis or Leach.

Okie St. is having a cash flow prob right now. They made some poor decisions (at T Boone's behest) with the money he gave them.

I'd put Tennessee above Va Tech and Okie State, but behind the original list of 10, ND, and Miami. I'd say they're comparable to Neb, maybe a touch higher due to much richer local recruiting.

Good point on OK St., I forgot about that. I guess Oregon is a better spot for the money grab. I didn't want to include ND in the original 10 for fear of starting an argument, but yeah. I understand the point about Tennessee being a better/more prestigous job than the other coach's spots, but it's not as simple as a leap in prestige. There's a comfort level and the current team on campus which could lead to an even bigger leap/more cash.

They shoulda brought in Cutcliffe as coach in waiting, with him taking over no later than '10.

oh man i can see saban going to the vols...that would be epic. Will Muschamp will get consideration. Im not kidding when I say expect Tommy Tuberville to be linked. Jim Leavitt would be a candidate if he ever wanted to leave the Bulls. Clemson will be courting the same guys though. Maybe even Auburn. Dan Mullen and Mike Bobo will get links if they want someone close to the conference. Steve Sarkisian also. I think it will come from this list: Mullen, Muschamp, Sarkisian.

I think I would actually donate money to see Saben go to the Vols.

Guys I appreciate the atempt to take shots at me, and my fave univeristy. And I do think most if not all here can agree that Alabama is a top 10 top job, just based on tradition and winning.

With that said, me and my fellow Bama fans were talking about it another site, and most agree that prolly the most intriguing coaching spot this offseason will be Clemson. The reason Clemson is prolly going to offer an SEC caliber contract to coach in the ACC. And let's face it you think Coaches like Butch Davis and Mike Leach are going to want to butt heads EVERY FRIGGIN WEEK in the SEC with an equal or better coach?

Butch Davis, I believe will stay at UNC.

Auburn: This job just isn't an intriguing job.Two words: Bobby Louder.

Tennessee's job is prolly the 2nd best that will be open in the offseason. If there is an SEC team to lure Butch Davis to the conference it would be Tennessee. Otherwise, it wouldn't surprise me if either David Cutcliffe or Jon Gruden are coaching at Tennessee next yr.

I think Mike Leach ends up at Clemson or stays at Tech.

Bobby Johnson or David Cutcliffe ends up at Tennessee

Auburn ends up with Mike Price (please, please, make it so, oh well), more likely somebody like Dabo Sweeney (or however the current Clem coach spells his name) ends up coaching Auburn. It wouldn't surprise me if Ferentz doesn't get a call from Louder and AU.

Bowden I could see essentially replacing Mike Leach at Tech (not a good trade offer from the Tech perspective, but still better then Auburn's potential trade of Tuberville to whatever puppet who will say yes to Louder.

I think S. Holtz will be interviewed by likely not get a call for a major job this yr, and most likely have to return to ECU and have a big yr next yr, before getting on the "everybody wants me" list.

Nebraska has crummy facilities in a recruiting wasteland and hasn't been nationally relevant in several years.

All that needs to be said about Nebraska is that they hired Bill Callahan to coach there.

Bobby Johnson's a longshot at best to even be considered for the job - I doubt he'll actually get it. As for Cutcliffe, while he's a terrific coach, Tennessee fans were simply tired of Fulmer. They want change (I don't include myself in this) and, therefore, will not be happy with any member of the "Fulmer regime." Plus, I don't think Cut would take the job that was opened by the firing of his very close friend.

And keep in mind, Tennessee can offer serious money to pull in a coach. Probably not the ridiculous 4-mil Bama gave Saban, but a pretty serious sum of cash - that and ego will play a large part in the thinking of an egotistical coach (which most of them are). I could see ruling out Butch Davis - I still see him as a longshot at best - but Leach would be crazy not to come here.

As much as I hate Saban, it would be worth it to watch Bama fans go crazy (sorry Redflash :D ).

That said, I think he still has another year or two before he tires of this job.

And Tennessee has terrific facilities, the third largest stadium in the nation (currently being renovated as well) and one of the largest recruiting budgets in the nation.

Right now, all Nebraska has on us is tradition - and we've got a decent tradition.

If he's fired, I'd love to see Tuberville here. He's getting utterly screwed over at Auburn and is one of the most underrated coaches in the nation.

Leavitt intrigues me, though I wonder what he'd do in a less rich recruiting state. Mullen and Bobo are interesting and guys I hadn't considered. The problem is, they're both from rivals and likely wouldn't be all that welcome here.

I'm not the biggest Muschamp fan and there's a good chance Sarkisian will want a west coast job (similar to Belotti and Lane Kiffin).

Michael Wilbon just made a comparison between Nebraska firing Frank Solich and Tennessee parting ways (firing) Fulmer.

I don't completely agree that they're similar, but I agree with the concept (a coach fired for too high expectations).

And for the record, I’ve just received a tip that one of Tennessee’s largest boosters spent the day golfing with former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher. I think I’ll take that one with a pretty big grain of salt. But heck, this is the internet… so I’ll throw it out there to see how many messageboards pick it up.

That's a heck of a rumor . . . :-))

From MrSEC.com - a very good website for those who are interested in the goings on around the SEC.

I was hoping for a Cowher to PSU deal

As silly as it is that Cowher might pass up the numerous NFL jobs he'd be offered if he said he's ready to come back, PSU would likely be one of the few jobs that might be somewhere in the realm of reality.

Of course, at Tennessee he'd be just a few hours from his family in NC, so yeah.

Petrino or Saban whose it gonna be.....

Mike Leach. Dude comes back to the SEC brings in Tony Franklin(they coached together at UK) and they really run the Airraid offense and whoop up on Auburn, that would be awesome. I gotta believe the D at Tech is more a product of the recruiting than it is of the coaching. He'll definetly get better players at UT on the defense side of the ball. I have a hard time imagining Tech can come anywhere close to the salary of UT. Hell they just bought out Fullmer for $6M.

That's what I'm thinking. I doubt we'd go as high as Saban's Bama contract, but cost is not a real big concern for the university right now. The economy may be down, but I haven't heard that our bigger donors are struggling and the SEC just signed that mega-monster deal with ESPN and each school is getting quite the hefty chunk of it.

Unless he just doesn't want the challenge (which I sincerely doubt), I see no way Leach turns down an offer from Tennessee - if they offer.

Mike Leach and Butch Davis won't go to Tennessee because they're afraid of Sylvester Croom.

Yeah and the Big XII is like the MAC when it comes to challenges. He should actually welcome going to the SEC.

At least he'd be on somewhat more level ground with the rest of the major teams.
