Illini football 2008 - better than IU!

but not THE U

go gophers

I have never heard anyone call Minnesota the U. Probably cause they'd be too embarrassed that they were supporting a team called the Golden Gophers.

I mean seriously? The U?

nobody cares about this game, but it caught my eye on yahoo - utep 28, tulsa 28 after the first quarter. the teams combined for 511 yards in the first quarter and utep also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Damn

tulsa has a crazy offense and an easy schedule

they have as good a chance as anyone to run the table

Tulsa always has an crazy offense. CUSA should be a better conference than it is...stupid ECU.

That's why the over was 75.5

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this later in the thread, but Tulsa beat the O/U by itself tonight.

And is there any doubt Texas should be the unanimous No. 1 this week?

Even tho I don't think they are the best team in football---I don't see a clear cut best team in America---because they don't play defense. With that said, I much rather let Texas have that target on their back then my team. Thus I much rather let Texas be ranked #1.

That's what everyone calls them in Minnesota and the Twin Cities. When I lived there I only heard them called "The U" or the gophers/gophs. No one says Minnesota.

I forgot to check the Canes. Fine none of the last five have. LSU no, UF, no, UT no, USC, no, LSU no...and if you want to get technical Auburn no.

The point is having a feature back isn't what it used to be for a couple of reasons. One, you don't run to win anymore. Two, with so much athleticism around the field, backs get tired more quickly (relatively speaking) and offsetting with multiple backs has become the more efficient way to run the football. It's not 1965 anymore. It's about passing the ball. The short screen passing game has replaced the running game, as well as the speed reads and to a certain extent the spring "option". Sitting up and trying to run the football with a feature back under the center just isn't the way to be good anymore.

In '04 White ran for 1.103 yards and Bush ran for 908. Hester ran for over 1,000 last year before the bowl game. So actually, only three of the last five have not had a 1,000 yard rusher and only three of the last seven have not.

Yeah Oklahoma wasn't any good with Adrian Peterson. Nor was Michigan with Mike Hart. Cal was never good with Marshawn Lynch (or Arrington before that). Texas was never good with Cedric Benson. Those are just a few off the top of my head in the last 5 years. Unless your only idea of being "good" is winning the National Championship. Which you shouldn't necessarily feel since wins and losses are meaningless.

The fact that you don't need a feature back to be good doesn't make them meaningless. You think Ohio State didn't miss Beanie? By the way there are 4 top 10 teams that will have 1,000 yard backs this year.

After watching Texas beat both OU and Mizzou, I have no doubt they are the best team in the country. If they play to their potential, I don't see any other team beating them.

This isn't saying that Texas can't or won't be beat. I just don't expect it to happen this year.

Five things I learned this weekend.

1. No one in the Big XII can play defense.

2. No one in the ACC should be ranked.

3. South Carolina will be dangerous the rest of the season.

4. No one in the Pac 10 outside of USC should be ranked.

5. Wisconsin is a complete disaster.

Five things I knew coming into this weekend, that are becoming more apparent.

1. Missouri's defense sucks is MAC quality.

2. No one in the ACC can play QB.

3. Everyone in the SEC can play defense.

4. The offenses in the Big XII are good, but nowhere near as good as the numbers.

5. Everyone in the Big XII north is overrated.

1 and 4 came very evident at the UT game today. Missouri's secondary was clueless all game long. McCoy had 10 yard windows to throw into all night long.

Top 25:

1. Texas

2. Alabama

3. USC

4. Oklahoma

5. Penn State

6. Florida

7. Georgia

8. Ohio State

9. Utah

10. Texas Tech

11. Boise State

12. Louisiana State

13. Oklahoma State

14. Brigham Young

15. South Florida

16. Texas Christian

17. Pittsburgh

18. Missouri

19. Tulsa

20. Ball State

21. Boston College

22. Florida State

23. Northwestern

24. Georgia Tech

25. Minnesota

um i said regular season. getting 1000 yards in 13 or 14 games isn't really being a team relying on a back. osu didnt have much of a problem running the ball versus ohio and troy without wells. usc was different because they are good. wells wouldnt have made a difference. pittman and wells didn't help them in the ncs. thats for sure. fact is you dont run to win anymore.

re texas. they havent played a real defense all season long...but they wont face one until the NC... so who knows

I know, I just think its funny that Texas doesn't play defense because they gave up points to OU and Missouri two of the highest scoring offenses in the nation. Not to mention having one of the youngest defenses around that has shown signs of improvement every week. Plus having one of the top 2-3 D-Lineman in the Nation. That 3 points in the first half to Mizzou wasn't impressive at all, or 7 points to OU in the second half either.

I'm guessing every area has something like that. People around here still refer to it as Arkansas, but it's common to refer to the university by mascot, ot "The Hill." As in, "We've got a new athletic director, new chancellor, and new coaches in football and basketball on The Hill. It's gonna be an interesting year."

How bad are the Big XII defenses?

In the last six seasons (2002-2007) there have been six BCS conference QBs who have had a completion percentage rounding to 70% or higher (69.5%+). They are:

72% Riley Skinner, Wake Forest 2007

72% Graham Harrell, Texas Tech 2007

70% Sam Bradford, Oklahoma 2007

70% Jason Campbell, Auburn, 2004

72% Philip Rivers, NC State 2003

70% Matt Schaub, Virginia 2003

This year there are SEVEN quarterbacks in the Big XII alone that are on pace to do that.

81% Coly McCoy, Texas

76% Chase Daniel, Missouri

71% Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

70% Zac Robinson, Oklahoma State

70% Joe Ganz, Oklahoma

70% Graham Harrell, Texas Tech

70% Todd Reesing, Kansas

The defenses in the big twelve are an embarrassment. they really are.

Boy I thought we'd get dropped farther than that. I'll be interested to see your prediction for the KU/Tech game, meph. I think we'll win, especially if TT plays the way they have the last two weeks.
