Two questions:

1) what's the latest update?

2) who are our sources on news: radio, print media, blogs?

Thanks

Latest update is that we should hear something by Monday, apparently. The Cubs and Braves are the favorites, although the exact makeup of the trade packages seem a bit unclear.

The sources are pretty varied, but Ken Rosenthal was the one who really kicked this story into high gear. Kevin Towers came out and said that Jake Peavy basically won't be a Padre come next season.

And that Peavy is looking at the trades and if the team he is going to lose a piece that will help them he will reject the trade too. This could help the Cubs as the players they are looking to trade serve no purpose on the Major League Team right now, but could immediately be on the Padres roster. The key players for the Braves are currently on the Major League Roster or pretty far down in the minors.

Peavy kind of has Towers by the balls with the NTC right now.

Mini update from Rosenthal, nothing groundbreaking:

The Padres are still weighing offers for right-hander Jake Peavy, and on Friday discussed the possibility of keeping the pitcher if they fail to receive a satisfactory proposal, according to a major league source. The Braves, after weeks of discussions, are growing impatient, another source said, and soon might push for a resolution. The Braves and Cubs remain the front-runners, with the Yankees and Dodgers on the backburner. ...

Yahoo updated the Shark article by the way:

The Padres continue to angle for Atlanta’s top pitching prospect, Tommy Hanson, to sweeten a package that could include shortstop Yunel Escobar and outfielder Jordan Schafer or Gorkys Hernandez. They had hoped for the Cubs to include pitcher Jeff Samardzija as part of a deal that could include outfielder Felix Pie, pitcher Sean Marshall and infielder Ronny Cedeno, but Samardzija has a full no-trade clause that he has no intent on giving up, said his agent, Mark Rodgers.

“Under no circumstances are we going to waive the no-trade provisions,” Rodgers said Friday.

The Cubs are tinkering with other players – pitcher Kevin Hart, minor-league pitcher Donnie Veal and, according to various reports, perhaps top hitting prospect Josh Vitters and minor leaguers Mitch Atkins, Wellington Castillo and Jose Ceda.

I maintain the Cubs are the front runners as long as the Braves don't include Hanson or Heyward. If the Braves include one of those that will get Peavy. Seeing as the Braves haven't been incline to include one another I like our chances.

If Shark not waiving his NTC costs us Jake Peavy, I'll hate him forever.

hendry's got to let him know how much better his numbers might be at petco and NL west ballparks. his salary for the next few years is set anyway.

And Jeff would probably be a lock to become a starter for the Pads, assuming that's what he wants to do. All in all though, I doubt Shark will be in the mix. I think he likes Chicago, which is a good thing.

I think he should be a lock for our rotation... get Marquis the hell out of here. I don't see us keeping Dempster if we get Peavy, no way Demp puts up those numbers again next year.

Quick question: Why do people call Jeff Samardjiza "Shark"?

It was his nickname at Notre Dame, for some reason.

He got it from preying upon weak secondaries (like a shark), if I'm not mistaken.

I thought it was because with his nose that, from a profile view, he looks like a shark.

Wade is correct. His teammates gave it to him as a poking-fun kind of thing.

Samardzija was nicknamed Shark because of his resemblance to the animated Shark character on Finding Nemo (more on this below).

In an interview to NBC, Samardzija himself said it all started on his freshman year at ND. He was new on the baseball team and out of nowhere they called him 'Shark'. It started during a game while he was pitching and they yelled at him from the dugout. Then Coach Paul Mainieri picked it up and it just snowballed from there.

The funny thing is the actual representation of his character was not the one from Finding Nemo, but instead the one from Shark Tale; Lenny.

What in the world does Jason Marquis have to do to get people to stop hating him? He was probably the most effective 5th starter in baseball last year.

And he was terrible... why have Marquis and his 10 million dollar contract when Shark would do no worse for his rookie salary?

I'd rather place blame on the guy giving him the NTC in the first place.

If I were good enough to play for the Cubs that young, and had a no trade claus, about the only place on earth w an MLB team I think I would wave it for would be San Diego...the weather is impeccable

While I agree with your comments on Marquis, you'll never get much sympathy by complimenting Marquis on a Cubs website. To me the only real negative to Marquis has been that he's a #5 starter paid like a #3 starter, but you can't blame him for taking the money that was offered.

Good point. Couple that in with the fact you would probably get a chance to be an everyday starter, put up numbers in that park that would make you appear to be even better than you actually are (see Chris Young), and ML teams all over the country would be chomping at the bit to offer you contracts that are better than your actual value.

By staying in Chicago, he might push himself out of any chance of being a starter. If the Cubs did trade for Peavy and resigned Dempster and Wood went elsewhere, you have to figure Samardzija is probably destined to be next year's set up man or late inning reliever.

But, he did request a full NTC, so it's his choice to veto any trades. He has every right to do so.

If Peavy ends up on the Braves and the media spins it in any way that Samardzija was the deal breaker, the fans will probably be all over him if he doesn't perform magnificently.

With this latest news, I would imagine the Cubs are the team looking at a 3 or 4 team trade, since the inclusion of Tommy Hanson and/or Jordan Shafer trumps any players we can offer. Only thing is, I don't see Atlanta doing this.

Towers is playing poker with Atlanta and Chicago, hoping one of them ups the ante enough to pull the trigger. Luckily for Atlanta and Chicago, Peavy is the pit boss in this card game.

Towers was just on with Levine and basicly said he would give Hendry the leg up becasue of their relationship. This is what Hendry brings to the table, alot of baseball people like him.

No offense to Dallas, but did anyone else hear this?

I find it rather hard to believe that Towers would say that.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right. I don't think Dallas was lying, but he probably paraphrased poorly or misunderstood.

I just missed the Towers interview, but I saw someone on BCB say the same thing. They said it would be in their podcast section, but it's not yet.

They need to stop giving out NTC's like roofies at a frat party.

Except for Soriano, the NTCs the Cubs have given out have been to players who were knowingly signing below-market-value deals to stay in Chicago. You don't get Lee or Ramirez to walk away from extra millions/years without giving them protection like that.
