it's sick that we keep acquiring my pitching man crushes... harden and peavy were my two favorite pitchers in baseball prior to this season.

i hope we go 2 for 2...

I give Hendry a lot of crap but it would be pretty amazing if he traded for Harden and Peavy in a span of about 4 months, especially with our farm system.

Sounds like the Braves are talking to the Marlins about Olsen according to mlbtraderumors, maybe they are trying to get a threeway going.

Or possibly as a fall back to Peavy, I know Olsen isn't nearly the pitcher he is, but he is young and can still improve, he can eat up innings on a young staff and develop into a decent pitcher when they contend in 2-4 years.

Agreed, he would be a good add on his own.

Don't be surprised if Harden goes along with prospects in this deal. I'm hearing that in order for this to get done they have to move Marquis salary and that Rich Harden will likely have to be part of the deal. I would also expect most of our best prospects to be included as well. If it means we get Peavy, then fine. But I would really like to keep Harden in this rotation for another year.

Surely we can pull this trade off, and then see if some team will take on Marquis for this year without us picking anything up. I don't care if we get a player in return who will never go above AA in his career. Just get his salary off the books.

Threeways are hard as hell to get going. Especially convincing the wife to make it work...

Oh. Not THAT kind of a threeway. Heh. #-o

I hear the after part is the hard part when your wife is involved.

Levine just reported that the deal will involve Pie, Cedeno, and Marshall or Mitch Atkins

Wow. If the Padres take that, Jim Hendry ought to be arrested for rape.

Hell, I'd let them have Marshall and Atkins just out of pity.

I'm pretty sure rchap misheard that and it was Marshall and Atkins.

I'd imagine so. The difference in trade value between Marshall and Atkins is sizable.

It would certainly be an interesting wrinkle if the Padres let both the Braves and Cubs know that they would have the winning bid for Peavy if they could add Olsen to it.

Towers to the Braves: Escobar, Olsen, Morton is a deal.

Towers to the Cubs: Pie, Olsen, Marshall, Cedeno is a deal.

Braves and Cubs then enter a bidding war for Olsen. Marlins win.

If we give up Shark and Marshall, I'm not too crazy about dumping Marquis for nothing. If Harden and Z or some other combination of two pitchers spend any time on the DL, we'll lose Gaudin from the pen, and be forced to dig for a Glendon Rusch type of pickup to plug the hole. Either that, or throw in Gooz and hope his arm stays attached, or pray for 2007 Hill to emerge from the depths of Lake Michigan. I'm all for going for Peavy, but it'll probably cost us depth. As much as I don't like Marquis, I wouldn't give away the insurance policy he serves as for nothing more than saving some money. It's not like that $7 mil we'll save by dumping him is going to help add depth if we really are also bucking to bring back Demp.

So what's actually happening? No offense to the beat reporters on the radio, but I'd rather stay away from that kind of rumor-mill this time around.

edit: that goes for mlbtraderumors.com too....

Olsen is way overrated. How much does playing in a pitcher's park help him?

Last I checked, the Padres play in a pitcher's park too.

92 ERA+ for a career. Yuck.

That money could be used to partially pay for Wood, or a bat like Bradley or Ibanez.

I could be wrong, but isn't Marquis due to get $10-10 1/2 mil this year?

my sources at Friar Nation.com have said that the Cubs deal with the Padres is imminent. Apparently, Kevin Towers is conferring with Big Bird, that in fact Oscar the Grouch was indeed the ringleader of Sesame Street. As for how this ties into the trade is up for speculation. It should be noted that Big Bird and Mike Fontenot have the same hair color.
