The Cubs may have overtaken the Braves as the favorites to land Jake Peavy, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Felix Pie would seem to be pretty close to a lock to be included in a Peavy deal with the Cubs. Other possibilities include Rich Hill, Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno, Mike Fontenot and Donald Veal. Rosenthal believes the Cubs could possibly acquire Peavy and re-sign Ryan Dempster, but that it would cost them a chance of retaining Kerry Wood.

Oh god...is this actually possible? I'm finally starting to believe that there is actually a realistic chance of this happening.

I don't like how they (according to Rosenthal, anyways) would rather keep Dempster and Let Wood walk. If we got Peavy I'd say Wood would be 43324x more necessary than Dempster. I'm worried about the bullpen as it is.

IF the Cubs get Peavy, I want no part of resigning Dempster. Let him walk, take the picks, and bring back Woody.

I'm all for replacing Dempster with Peavy however, my concern is whether the Cubs will have to liquidate all their resources to do so. Leaving them with nothing (as far as the Marlins are concerned) and therefore, unable to pursue Hermida - an off season of trades for Peavy and Hermida, resigning Wood and possible getting a compensation pick for Howry? How can that be bad?

So? I'd take Derosa in RF (Fukudome/Johnson CF platoon) and Fontenot at 2B everyday if it meant Peavy in the rotation. Still even if you give up Pie, Ceda, Marshall, and Cedeno for Peavy, you still have Castillo, Hill, and others (including recent draft picks who can be PTBNL til June) that could be of interest to the Marlins.

Agreed. While Peavy, Z, harden, Dempster, Lilly would be a legendary rotation, the pen would be shaky at best, and Id rather bring back Wood to solidify it, plus maybe grab a lefty bat. With Peavy, Z, Harden, Lilly as 1-4, Marquis would be a sufficient #5, or who knows, maybe Rich Hill can pull himself up.

Plus, we may not even have to end up giving up all those guys. As I recall, we planned on giving up that type of package for Harden, and ended up giving up half of what I though we would. Chances are, there could be a Josh Donaldson in the package who hasnt even shown up our radar as a trade assset.

What I like about our chances, as I have said before is while we dont have that 1 super star prospect, which most teams often wouldnt want to move anyway, we have enough expendable, major league ready players that a team like the Padres could use as building blocks. Pie, Marshall, Ceda, and Theriot/Fontenot/Cedeno should be very enticing to them. Im skeptical that theyd want Ronny however. He hasnt had much success hitting at Wrigley, and PetCo is a hell of a lot harder to hit in.

The Braves had a window of exclusivity to hammer out a Peavy trade, but that has apparently passed. The Padres like the Cubs' young pitching, even if it doesn't match Atlanta's.

Im curious abou the Cubs young pitching. Mashall? Ceda? Atkins? Papelbon? Would it cause a massive NSBB uproar if Jay Jackson was involved?

If we could hang on to Marshall, he'd be a servicable #5. If given the option, I'd rather retain Wood than Dempster.

And let's not get too excited, yet. Remember the Cubs were the "front runners" for Roberts last offseason, too.

No, not even close. It can involve any pitcher not named Marmol and there will be no uproar.

Important point.

I find it interesting that on almost all fronts the Cubs are noted as being interested. There is a lot of "related" news on rotoworld for the Cubs.

Good Thing! Go Trader Jim!

Hyperthetically speaking, if the Cubs do acquire Peavy, what makes people think the Cubs will re-sign Ryan Dempster? .

The sources who've said that resigning Demp and trading for Peavy would be our preference, with the new addition of us being willing to go 4 years.

I am more then willing to let Dempster walk if the Cubs land Peavy. P/Z/H/L would still leave the Cubs with the best rotation in the NL at the very least, and arguably the best in baseball. Take what money that would be use on Dempster and sign Furcal, and see about acquiring Hermida and call it an offseason.

If I'm not mistaken, he could be a PTBNL if the Padres are willing to accept that, and if the Cubs are willing to include him.

PTBNL have to be settled within 6 months. Meaning the trade would have to wait until 6 months before Jackson's sign date.(which I'm sure is closer to early July than late June.

I bet Hendry's thought is that with Dempster as our "5th starter" with bullpen experience, he would be very easy to convert to the bullpen during the playoffs, giving the team Peavy, Harden, Z, Lilly (need a lefty in there) and then Dempster as one of the setup guys. I still think its stupid to sign Dempster at the expense of Wood. Our bullpen could be very bad next year.

Ahh, I didn't realize there was only a 6 month window.

I know i'm in the minority, but I like the idea of resigning Demp with Peavy and letting Wood walk, manlove aside.

The potential for that rotation would just be too great.

I know people are wary off giving Dempster 12 million or whatever, but with the overinflated price of closers, isn't Kerry likely to be around 10 million a year?

It doesn't seem like that much of a difference to me, and i'd rather take a good starter over a good one inning guy (who is coming off his first healthy season in forever...not invluding the blister).

I honestly don't want both Peavy and Dempster. I think what we saw from Dempster was a mirage. If we can somehow snag Peavy, we let Dempster walk because between the two it's a no-brainer who is better. As far as Wood is concerned I would like to see him signed if the price is right. Are we confident Samardjiza can handle the 8th inning role? I wonder if the Cubs think Andrew Cashner is ready to at least fill in the 7th or 8th inning role for us. He could be the wild card in our bullpen next year.

I almost forgot about Ceda. He's another guy we might need to lean on. Shark,Cashner,Ceda.
