Also, they've come to the realization that they will never be a good home run hitting club in that park. So, they want to get speedy. I forgot that they brought up Will Venable, so Pie is kind of overkill.

My guess is he doesn't get traded unless Peavy starts demanding it.

Padres attendance figures were down by 300,000 this year. Trade Peavy, and it gets real ugly, IMO.

Sure, but coming off a down year, it's going to be bad again next year anyway. They need to rebuild anyway and smaller market teams have a tough time affording expensive starting pitching.

The winning and losing matters a lot more than name players.

Unfortunately, we'll probably never know how much losing a player of his caliber on a small market team affects attendance. You are correct that they will be down coming off a bad year. I'm sure their season ticket sales this season wasn't impacted all that much since they were coming off a good season the previous year and essentially had everyone from that team coming back again. Season ticket sales will plummet this coming season now that fans know it was a bad team this year and will likely be worse next year.

These people love Peavy, however.

Pittsburgh loved Jason Bay (and before that Giles).

I just don't think there are untouchable players. Very, very few teams really hold on to the fan favorites forever, and most smaller clubs get rid of them earlier than expected.

I'm curious what the attendance figures looked like when Peavy pitched and when anyone not named Peavy pitched.

29,076 - Not Jake Peavy

34,245 - Jake Peavy

This season only.

In total those numbers come to 67k more than what ESPN has for overall attendance.

i pulled the data off of b-r. dunno why its different.

Maybe one is actual tickets sold and the other one is based on butts in the seats? Just thinkin' out loud.

70,000 tickets over the course of the season. id say the price is about 20 bucks on average, considering most of the good ones were probably bought in the other games too. So about 1.4m

Peavy Trade Talks Begin

By Tim Dierkes [October 13 at 1:42pm CST]

A nugget from Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune:

Kevin Towers said he has heard from clubs interested in trading for ace pitcher Jake Peavy. "We're having talks," he said. The GM said he wouldn't be surprised if the Peavy talks heat up next month.

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan wrote today that Peavy said he will only waive his no-trade clause for a National League team. However, Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod said Friday that three teams in the American League could entice his client. The Yankees could be one; we discussed the possibility here. A possible Peavy trade will be one of the biggest stories at the Winter Meetings in December.

Looks like the Pads are for real about moving him. Personally, I dont think we have a chance. Their are other teams with more to offer that will want him just as bad and need him a lot more. The Yankees and Mets both come to mind. The Brewers would be a great trade partner for them. They have offense to spare. The question is, would he waive his NTC to go there? Also, they probably wouldnt want Fielder with Adrian Gonzalez holding down 1B. Would they be willing to move Gamel? If The Brewers were willing to take on a substantial chunk of Peavys contract, Gamel and Parra would probably do the trick, then teh Brewers could focus on getting a decent 3 or 4 starter, and remain a legit contender. Jon Garland could be a realistic target for them.

I wouldn't have thought that we had the prospects to get Harden either, but we did. Who knows what could happen here.

I can already see the Yankees trying to use Cano as the centerpiece for a Peavy trade.

Harden + Hill + Pie? Too much? I wonder if they'd be interested in Harden. I'd be willing to part with him for Peavy if we didn't otherwise have the goods to get Peavy. Either that, or offer Harden up in a 3 way to someone who is.

The Padres have no reason to acquire a guy with a 1 year deal. I have no desire to trade Harden. When healthy he's even better than Peavy. Have him healthy by October '09, it's all that matters.

I agree that it's a longshot that the Pads would be interested in Harden, but I think this is a case where a 3-way deal would be highly workable. I like Harden, but I think he's only as good as Peavy when both are 100%. Peavy's ability to be at or near 100% for most of the season makes him far more valuable than Harden, IMO.

On the other hand, Harden can put butts in seats like Peavy did when he's healthy, and they'd probably like to get someone that draws fans and a prospect or two, instead of just a bunch of prospects.

Think cheap. Harden would not be cheap enough. I'm not even sure Cano would be cheap enough, although there would be a significant decrease in payroll to add Cano, Hughes and Kennedy in exchange for Peavy.

Moores is actually considering taking on an investor to help him keep this team afloat during this messy divorce.

Hill? Rich Hill? He still has value?

If I was another GM, I'd be trying to Anthony Reyes him out of Chicago.

Hill at least has to show some semblence of control before anyone would take a flyer on him.

Yeah, but A) Reyes never sucked like Hill sucked this year and B) all the Cards got for him was a low level relief prospect

Despite that, I still think he will have decent value. Unlike Reyes, Hill has a spectacular major league season under his belt, which I think more than wipes out the two negative points I made above.

Dont forget, Hill either needs to be traded or on the major league roster next year so his name is going to pop up in trade rumors.

Given the brain trust in SD, I'd have to imagine we'd see something like what Beane has done in Oakland. Think Danny Haren, they'll look for one big prospect but also a handful of really interesting prospects to round out the package. Unfortunately, I don't think we have that one big prospect. Possibly its Rich Hill, but possibly not. Hill, Pie, Vitters are closer to big prospects than interesting prospects, but individually, none of them are top 25 material. It really depends on how SD evaluates our players. We know they've been intersted in Pie before. From SD's willingness perspective, I wouldn't give us great odds on Peavy, but I wouldn't count us out either. Unfortunately, I don't think the Cubs would be interested in giving away the needed talent for him.

Why? If you're the Padres you wouldn't trade a relief prospect for Rich Hill?(not saying the Cubs should accept a relief prospect for him, but it wouldn't shock me) He's a guy that screams change of scenery to me.
