Does it make sense to have 11 pitchers on the roster? If so Marquis and Gaudin if healthy. If not Wuertz.

Also wouldn't be surprised if Pie was considered. Don't know why but I have a feeling.

Not sure Pie is a lock, although I'd like to see him on the roster.

Gaudin is a lock if healthy.

I'd like to see Guzman if he's healthy, otherwise one of Wuertz/Howry/Marquis.

Is Pie really a lock at this point? I mean, I'd put him on the playoff roster but I'm not sure if Lou will.

If Marquis pitches well tonight, I've gotta think that he's secured a spot in the bullpen.

Don't kid yourselves. Howry is a lock. He pitched him in the 7th of a 1-run game and has been for the majority of the year. He's a veteran w/ playoff experience. I won't make any predictions on his role, but he will be on the team.

I think Marquis will be there too out of the pen, in case one of the starters gets absolutely bombed.

And yeah, Pie is nowhere near a lock.

I will. He'll continue to be used in close games.

I don't think Pie's a lock. I think 11 pitchers is.

Really? If you take him off, that's only 13 position players. In a 5 game series, if you need 11 pitchers, you're probably already effed.

Pie's value as a PH and defensive replacement>>>>>having Howry and/or Marquis there for mop up duty.

During the regular season, Pie wasn't very valuable, but in a short series, I can't imagine them not bringing him. Using Jason Marquis as a pinch runner is OK in the middle of June against the Reds, but I'd rather have Pie come in after Ward hits a single or something.

Leaving Pie off doesn't mean 12 pitchers. I don't know where that came from.

I see the locks as

Z, Harden, Dempster, Lilly

Wood, Marmol, Samardzija, Marshall, and Cotts

Soriano, Theriot, Lee, Ramirez, Soto, Edmonds, DeRosa, Kosuke

Johnson, Fontenot, Cedeno, Blanco

I'd personally give those last 4 spots to Gaudin, Gooz, Pie, and Ward.

If Gaudin's hurt, I'd go Marquis. I could be talked into Hoff over Ward.

If Gaudin is healthy, then I think he makes the playoff roster along with both Howry and Marquis... which probably makes Marshall the odd man out.

Yup. Probably what will end up happening. Marshall's spot will likely depend on Gaudin's health.

As far as the last position player... Ward will be in, so it will come down to Pie vs. Hoff. Given that Pie has played nearly everyday in some capacity, and Hoff has been glued to the bench, my guess is that it will be Pie. That is fine by me, as he provides speed and CF Def, two commodities not really matched by anyone else on the squad.

The last 7 games will be a tryout for the post season roster for these guys:

Pie: will have to hit to justify a spot

Ward: will get a couple starts to show he deserves it over Hoffpauir

Guzman: Piniella will see what he has once the games don't matter, hopefully he likes what he sees.

Howry: will have to not suck

I'm not counting on Gaudin being available. I'm not so sure that, given the cause of his injury, that management is too happy with him. This is based more on feeling than actual evidence.

Marquis gets a courtesy rostering.

I'm disappointed that Hendry didn't make a waiver deal for a RH bat to at least keep that option open.

There are rumblings that Pie could make the playoff roster over Fukudome. I saw it in today's Tribune, but I can't seem to find it on the website.

I guess Levine and Randy Bush were on the radio over the weekend and it was also discussed that they were thinking of having Pie on the roster and Edmonds off it, given his recent struggles, but I highly HIGHLY doubt that happens.

I could see the Fukudome scenario playing out, though.

It's really disappointing that everyone thinks Jim Edmonds has been bad lately. It tells me the front office types still don't know how to read, and I like literacy in my team's front office.

It's more the media's fault than anything.

And I should've phrased my post better because I don't really feel like he's been doing all that badly.

The only way you have to choose between the two (Pie and Fuk) is if the Cubs decide to carry 12 pitchers (SSR does a great job breaking this down about 5 posts up). I would be pretty shocked if that is what the cubs decided to do given the breaks between games give the bullpen more rest than during the regular season.

I would be too. I'm just passing on what I saw in the paper. Can't figure out why I can't find it online.

I heard talk about the same thing on the radio this morning. Don't think it has much merit, as I just cannot see the cubs leaving Fukudome of the playoff roster. That said, if we had a big time hitter from the right side of the plate available (think a right handed hitting Hoff), Kosuke might be in serious trouble.

There are some (admittedly stupid) scenarios where it could be a Pie/Edmonds or Pie/Kosuke choice while having 11 pitchers.

Ward and Hoff is pretty unlikely now, but before Hoff came up for September and got all of -2 ABs, I thought it was a possibility.

Ward and Koyie Hill is pretty colossally stupid, and rather unlikely, but it wouldn't shock me to see it considering Blanco's pretty much the #1 righty off the bench when Reed starts.

My gut feeling is the Cubs do the intelligent thing and take Pie, Kosuke, and Edmonds. Leaving off your best option in CF in favor of 2 (or 3 if you include Kosuke) inferior ones is pretty mind-numbing. Edmonds STILL to this day has the best OPS of anyone who's gotten remotely regular playing time.

Edmonds off the playoff roster? Are those guys insane?

He'll be starting freakin game 1

Randy Bush = Cubs assistant GM

But I agree that there's little chance it'll happen.

I really think Marquis will get on. He's been borderline good of late and I have a feeling the long relief role would work ok for him.
Posted
Edmonds will positively be on the roster. Howry has the "experience" factor going for him. Marquis will make it unless he really sucks the rest of the way. Pie won't make it unless he shows he can hit. Fukudome will make the roster for depth and defense.

And he's going to show that in a week? Pie will likely make it regardless of his hitting because of his defense and speed. Fact is, he is the guy you want in center when trying to preserve a lead, and he is the best guy the cubs have to use as a pinch runner.

I think the cubs roster will look like this:

Pitchers (11)

(S) Z, Demp, Harden, Lilly

® Marquis (longman), Cotts, Marmol, Wood, Howry, Shark, Gaudin (if healthy, Marshall if not)

Position players (14)

Lee, Derosa, Riot, Ram, Soto, Fukudome, Edmonds, Soriano, Reed, Fontenot, Blanco, Cendeno, Ward, Pie
