Even though more teams have to lose for our playoff MN to go down, the upcoming Brewers/Phillies Series is important, (although more so for the Brewers) and is a win win situation for the Cubs. The questions is, do you guys want to increase our division lead, or get the playoff MN # down more? I think in these situations, a split is ideal.

I see no reason to root for the Brewers. I want Philly to tear them apart. Actually, I hope they only win 3 of 4 because I don't want them to pass Milwaukee, which would force us to play Philly in the NLDS.

It is icing on the cake if all goes well, but the Cubs benefit in the playoffs if everyone else is fighting to get in -- thus can't rest players or set up their starting rotation. A Phillies sweep suggests the Brewers will have to fight both the Cards and NL East loser for the wild card, and it means the Phillies at least stay close enough to the Mets that they both have to keep fighting for the division and/or wild card. It is surprising that the Dodgers now look as though they may be in the next best position to provide some extra rest for starters at the end of the month.

Sometimes that backfires and the teams that have been fighting have a level of intensity that someone who coasts into the playoffs doesn't. But after the last week, a lack of intensity shouldn't be a problem for the Cubs. With Zambrano and Harden (hopefully) comming back from extended rest, an extra day off for Dempster the next two times through the rotation, and maybe for Lilly and Marquis (?!) as well, and then should be as ready for the playoffs as they can hope.

Clearly, though, it is much more important that the Cubs play well than anything else.

There are too many teams that have to lose every day to worry about with the WC magic number IMO, the Mets could even figure into this WC mess too if they get overtaken by the Phillies. Whereas the Division Magic number is completely in the Cubs control starting next week. Do you really want to fall out of the divisional lead and get thrown into a potentially messy WC race worrying about 2 or 3 teams and what they do the rest of the way? Let the Brewers worry about that. The more I think about it, I would just a soon see the Brewers go down this weekend and increase the divisional lead. If the Cubs could just go around .500 the rest of the way, the whole point is "mute" as Lou would say, and the Cubs will be in one way or another.

Think of it this way. For 4 straight days, one of the magic numbers will be going down no matter what. If we win that day, then one of the numbers goes down by 1, and the other by 2.

So let's win some damn games.

That's not really true. As has been pointed out, the Phillies, Cards, and Stros are all tied in the loss column.

I'm rooting Phillies 3/4.

If the Phils lose then they aren't the Wild Card threat, Houston or St Louis will be. I want the Phils to sweep and the Cubs to win all four games while these two teams play.

Phils sweep no doubt. If we go 2-2 you are looking at a 6.5 game division lead with 13 to play.

The problem with a Phils sweep is that it (I think) ties them up with the Brewers, making the chances of us facing Philly in the first round significantly higher.

With the Dodgers up 3.5 now in the NL West, I really don't want a Phillies sweep. 3 of 4 would be ideal.

The comedic value of the Brewers not making the playoffs after all this would almost be worth it, though.

But no friggin way do I want the Phillies in the first round.

Eh... who cares, though, really. It's all the same. Either we win or we don't.

1. Clinch the division

2. Secure home field throughout the playoffs

3. Get as much rest for the starting rotation while setting them up for the playoffs

Then worry about who the first round opponent will be, so I'm looking for a Phillies sweep.

I though it's best record vs worst record in the playoffs?

That'd be Cubs vs Dodgers, if everything ended today, right?

Forgot that the Mets couldn't play the Phillies. Go Phillies!
