The latest from the Houston Chronicle...

Link.

Astros owner Drayton McLane expects to learn about noon today how the club will proceed for Friday's series opener against the Chicago Cubs at Minute Maid Park.

As of 10 a.m., McLane said the Cubs were still expected to fly in tonight, but the key will be fans' safety. McLane said the team is working closely with the emergency management services.

"The most important thing is people's safety. We're trying to do what is best for all our fans and their families. We'll know more later today," McLane said.

Schools in Corpus Christi were canceled Thursday and Friday. Since then the track has gone from a direct hit to Corpus Christi, but moving north up the state every couple of hours. Just based on the sheer size of this thing Houston is going to be hit with a whole lot of rain and wind at the very least. Rita caused a lot of flooding around downtown Houston and it was not a direct hit either. Pretty close though.

Count me among those who believe that Mclane doesn't really want the series in Houston but is playing hardball to get money from Selig. This series (at least the last 2 games) will likely be held elsewhere.

He is going to have a very difficult time getting employees to work, not just fans to the game.

If any players or fans or umpires or whatever get hurt because they are playing this weekend. Selig needs to give up his job as commissioner.

Give the guy a chance to make his decision before you start calling for his job.

I wouldn't mind some sort of postponement of these games. The Astros are the hottest team in baseball. The last thing the Cubs need is to get swept or lose 2/3.

Honestly, that does make a lot of sense having them play at a neutral stadium.

No thanks! We don't need to be playing DH's this time of the year. Let's just play them now.

I don't think it does. They need to do something that generates revenue. That will not happen at a neutral site. Play it in Chicago, sell out games, let Houston bat 2nd and take home the gross profits.

Also, both Houston and Chicago have an open date Monday, so a good bet would be to wait out the storm and see if they can get at least two games played in Houston.

I bet this happens. So are the players just going to fly to Chicago until the storm passes, then fly out to Houston? Or stay in St. Louis? Why not just pick a neutral site and get the games in without rearranging schedules?!!?

The Cubs are missing Oswalt and Wandy Roderigez as of right now. They are throwing two rookies at the Cubs as fill in starters this weekend. This is the best time to play Houston, just not in Houston. And yes, getting swept would not be good, but losing 2 of 3 would only allow Houston to gain one game with 14 to go. The Brewers will have their hands full with the Phillies so I don't see them gaining much if any ground, even if the Cubs lose 2 of 3 with Houston. At all costs, the Cubs need to avoid the sweep, 2 out of 3 would be bonus. Think of it like a football game and trying to run out the clock.

What kind of crowds did the games at Comiskey draw a few years ago? How did they price the tickets?

I think St. Louis would draw pretty well, with baseball fans both here and all the local Cub fans.

That would be the most obvious answer, but Houston will claim an unfair home field advantage because the crowd would be Cubs fans.

Good point and very true. Anytime we miss Oswalt is a good day.

UNOFFICIAL, still being discussed

No Game Friday or Satruday per Jesse Rogers on the Score. Double headed on Sunday.

That sucks if official! I hate DH!

So DH on Sunday and single game Monday?

Honestly, this makes sense. The Astros get to play in Houston, the Cubs don't have to go to Houston until after the storm theoretically hits, and with the off day on Monday they can play the entire series.

Does suck but we are pretty much locks for the playoffs. I would hate this a lot more if we were only a game or two up.
