I've lived through probably 12 hurricanes and if Houston is rather far inland, the problem will be rain rather than wind. As soon as hurricanes come ashore the wind starts to die and the storm goes down a category or so. What happens is they pick up so much velocity in open waters because they are unobstructed but when they hit vegetation and structures, it takes away some of their energy. Houston might get a couple feet of rain though.

What sucks is this will force the Cubs to finish the season with 16 games in 15 days, 10 on the road and 6 at home all against teams with playoff aspirations.

If things can go right this weekend, we can still clinch early enough that it won't matter...

What would suck is if the hurricane caused damage to MMP, and the teams would be unable to play there. It's too late to get out of town and play somewhere else. So you would have to replay the games at the end of the season (if needed), which brings up an interesting hypothetical situation.

Let's say the Cubs clinched HFA and have nothing to play for. The Astros finish 0.5 games behind the WC making it necessary to replay the games (DH one day, single game the next). The Cubs playoff series gets delayed and obviously the Cubs have no intention of ruining their rotation or tiring out their players. How do you play those 3 games and straddle the line between playoff preparation and integrity?

Houston can flood too, this will the biggest problem IMO. Also I would not expect a good turnout from the Houston crowd.

You get right on the side of playoff preparation and say eff the Brewers. Run out the B team and if they lose, oh well.

it's only about 35 miles from the coast so it's going to get slammed pretty good.

This sounds like a fine time to play in Houston - this is foolishness on part of MLB and the Astros.

(CNN) -- Residents in low-lying areas surrounding Houston are evacuating Thursday afternoon as Hurricane Ike headed for the Texas coast, officials said.

"We strongly urge you to evacuate before tomorrow," said Judge Ed Emmett, Harris County's chief executive officer, at a news conference Thursday with Houston Mayor Bill White.

Government offices and schools will be closed Friday in Houston in anticipation of the hurricane. Officials are still deciding whether to put a contraflow system in place, or reverse highway lanes to make them one way to help with evacuations, Emmett said.

And here we are, still no official word. This is ridiculous.

The city is evacuating for a major hurricane. There isn't going to be anyone back in town by Sunday. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Ironically, I'm a meteorologist (by education, though not by profession), live in Houston, and am a lifetime Cub Fan. I expect significant damage in Houston from this storm, unless it veers dramatically to the north as did Hurricane Rita back in 2005. In fact, this storm is pretty much on the same track as Rita was and is expected to hit approximately the same time (early Sat. am).

I will be very pleasantly surprised if they play a double header this Sunday at Minute Maid Park, as that will likely mean that damage has been less than anticipated in central Houston, where I live. I wonder if Minute Maid has backup electrical power, as I suspect that there will be massive power outages here over the weekend.

I hope MLB has some backup plans in the works!

Yeah, Houston has a history of flooding problems. Obviously a much different situation and a different storm, but Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 was pretty bad. Obviously Ike won't drop 20" + of rain like Allison did, but still.

What the mutha frak?

They're really going to do this? Seriously? Have 2 major league teams huddle in an evacuated city through a hurricane so the Stros can make their *GATE*?!?

Well, they've already sold all the tickets. So long as they play an official game, they don't have to refund the money. No matter that there will be nobody there.

I don't think the Cubs would risk staying in Houston tomorrow and Saturday. If they planned on flying out on Sunday, there might be a chance they won't get on the plane because the game won't be playable.

Very poor planning on MLB's part if they go through with this rather than a backup place. There's a distinct possibility power, etc. is out and Houston is not in playable condition on Sunday and even Monday.

If I was an Astros fan I'd be livid and probably less likely to go to games in the future due to their selfish behavior.

Of course if the MLB just sucked it up and gave the Astros the money they would have gotten from the series, they could move it elsewhere and everything would be fine.

Is there an Astros equivalent to NSBB? I wonder what they have to say.

Exactly. Treat the game like we would have treated the HOF game.

Yeah you're probably right. Normally I'd be all about the integrity of the game, but the fact that in that scenario, the Cubs would be forced to travel to Houston, sit through a hurricane, and not play any games, and then forced to delay their playoff series to play, for them, meaningless games. I'd say eff em too.

There was supposed to be word on this a couple of hours ago. This "no news yet" makes me think that MLB is figuring out the "neutral site" scenario, making the necessary phone calls to other ballparks, travel plans, and television crew changes. If they were just going to play on Sunday and Monday in Houston, wouldn't they have just announced this already?
