Cole Hamels: 11-8, 3.20

Ryan Dempster: 15-5, 2.85

The Cubs are back home and welcome in the Philadelphia Phillies, in the first of a seven game homestand. The Phillies lead the season series 2-1, but the two teams haven't met since mid April. Taking the mound for the Phillies is their ace, Cole Hamels. He dominated the Cubs on April 12th, allowing just one hit through seven innings. Ryan Dempster has been the most consistent starter for the Cubs this season, and with another win will set a new career high in wins. He has yet to face the Phillies this year, and hasn't faced them since 2002.

Keep it going. Go Cubs!

I can't wait to see how this series shakes out. The Phillies are one of the legitimate contenders to keep the Cubs out of The Show, both clubs are doing very well recently, and the top four starters are all going for the Cubs. I would consider a split to be a success, and taking three would be a HUGE statement to the contenders left on our schedule.

I still get a kid-like thrill whenever good teams from other divisions come to town to play my team. It's like seeing big comic book characters crossover in my own backyard. Edited by Sammy Sofa

So interleague play = christmas?

Can somebody tell me if the underground Lake and State L station is open again yet? I know a few weeks ago it was closed for construction. If not, it's just like one block to the above-ground station, correct? I don't really go downtown that often, but I'll be there tomorrow.

You must have had some crazy Christmases, man.

It's closed on weekends and at night on weekdays. They're doing a lot of construction down there until the end of October.

This should be a fun one tonight. I actually really like this matchup for Dempster. Philly is a team that will be prone to swing on top of the sinker and pound it in the dirt or they will try to get underneath it and pop the ball up. Ryan hasn't allowed a HR in his last 9 starts. On the other end, Hamels is prone to give up the longball. That's been his one achilles heel. This has all the makings of a 2-1 game for either side. Be patient with Hamels. Try to run his pitch count up and get him out early.

Oh poop...

The warmest temps and, by afternoon, highest humidities since Saturday. Sun filters through increasing clouds. South winds increase to 6 to 15 m.p.h. but may become southeast along the lake. Prospects for scattered thunderstorms increase. A period of more numerous t-storms is possible the first half of Thursday night depositing rain or limited coverage downpours over 40 to 60 percent of the area. Winds shift northwest in the hours before sunrise Friday.

I hate weather

Hamels gave up a HR to Theriot? What did he do, ricochet a line drive off Utleys head over the fence?

Heres what Phillies Phans are saying about the series:

In the series vs the cubs, we have the edge in the hamels game, a draw in the myers vs lilly game, and they have the edge in the zambrano and harden games. We have to steal one of those gaem IMO bc we can't count on winning the myers game. We'll see how it plays out. Hopefully the wind is blowing in and all the the flyballs hamels/myers get stay in the park.

I'm glad we have Cole going against the Cubs, a split or better there would be super.

It is August 27 and there is no dominant team in baseball this year. The Phils have a chance to not only win a division but get to the World Series IF they are willing to go the extra mile and bring in another bat.

Let's face it, the NL favorite right now is the Cubs...and they are the Cubs so who knows about that.

The Phils have owned the Cubs over the past 2 years and we have Hamels, Myers, Blanton, and Moyer going in the series with the Cubs which should get us at least a split, maybe 3-1.

The Cubs games in Wrigley this year have some kind of mojo going from the times I've seen them. The atmosphere is electric. I would be thrilled with the Phils getting out of there at 2-2 and a bullpen not completely exhausted.

Four in Chicago should be tough but either they are up to it or they are not.

Pedro Martinez

Johan Santana

Ryan Dempster

Rich Harden

Ted Lilly

Carlos Zambrano

this is going to be a brutal week

I'd have to say that a team 6 games clear of the entire league and 10 games clear of every team but one is pretty dominant in the league. Maybe that's just me, though.

And I hate to say it, but the pitching matchup in this game favors the Cubs. Dempster has been that good.

Dempster has been great, but I'd say the pitching matchup is even or slightly favors the Phillies. We don't hit Cole well at all.

Gotta figure it out pronto! Beating the Phils with Hamels starting would set a very nice tone for the rest of the series.
