The New York Times reports that Yankees' first-round draft pick Gerrit Cole will attend UCLA instead of signing with the team.

He's a Scott Boras client, but has reportedly decided to attend college no matter what the Yankees offer. That's the story, at least. Cole grew up a Yankees fan and hung around in their hotel lobby in Arizona during the 2001 World Series, but apparently he'd rather go to UCLA. The Yanks will get a compensatory pick in next year's draft.

Wow........a Scott Boras "client"/Yankee fan growing up, turning down playing for the Yankees to play at UCLA?

In the words of Michael Kelso:

BURNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is truly a bad yr to be a Yankee or a fan. Can't even signed their owned first rd pick.

UCLA signed a kid from Davis a couple weeks ago, Cody Keefer. He can really hit. Not quite Max Stassi type hitting, but that doesn't really mean much because Stassi is insane.

A guaranteed multi-millionaire with his 4 years of college paid for by MLB (if he doesn't pan out) is turning that down to better his chances of earning more money spurning a team that is always willing to go well over slot by risking injury, bombing out of school, and/or falling apart as a pitcher?

Bad decision if he goes to UCLA, IMO.

Boras isn't doing what it is best for his client's long-term well-being, IMO. He has the opportunity to set-up his financial security for life.

speaking of this, bp's kevin goldstein says that negotiations between the nationals and aaron crow are "a mess" and there's no better than a 50/50 chance that he signs with them.

the pirates absolutely HAVE to get pedro alvarez signed. their fans might burn down the ballpark if they don't sign him.

Yeah, it sounds like the Crow-Nationals thing is a mess.

Alvarez will sign. The Pirates already opened their checkbook for Grossman.

But, all our experts on here said don't waste a pick on him. No way he will sign. :good: Good call guys.

What he signed for and what his demands were at the time of the draft are likely two different numbers.

Unless you're saying you know for a fact that his original demands were "only" 1.25 mil?

Multiple media reports suggested he was asking for top 10 money ($2+ million). Kudos to the Royals and it is a disappointment seeing him sign for less than the reports, but 29 other teams (including the Angels, Tigers, Red Sox and Yankees) passed on Melville.

I'm saying you shouldn't believe everything that you read about a guy. It is really easy to say you aren't gonna sign for a certain amount, until they offer it to you.

While I do agree with that sentiment, I also believe the Pirates won't killed themselves if they don't sign Alvarez. I think getting LaRoche was insurance if the don't get Alvarez signed.

It is a very stupid decision, but maybe it's the kid's idea.

Take Matusz off the list, he signed a big league deal with a $3.2 million bonus with the Orioles per the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Lot of way overslot deals in the last 24 hours, the Cubs haven't signed anyone.

I can't imagine that there are too many kids willing to pass up that money and playing baseball professionally, especially given his agents' history. Boras' past is too much of an indication of what likely happened IMO.

1 hour to go, Jonathan Mayo:

No. 2 Pedro Alvarez: Nothing doing there right now. Last I heard was Boras/Alvarez was looking for Teixeira money (close to $10 mil and a big-league deal) and, well, the Bucs weren't budging, perhaps setting a ceiling of $8 mil.

No. 3 Eric Hosmer: Nothing new here than what I reported recently. Royals still feel it'll get done and it's looking like it'll be north of what Mike Moustakas got last year ($4 mil). How far north remains to be seen, and whether ownership will OK it is another issue.

No. 5 Buster Posey: Still no official deal on the FSU catcher. Not sure on the hold up, but it's causing some other logjams...

No. 7 Yonder Alonso: This one is being held up by the Giants and Posey.

No. 9 pick Aaron Crow. It's always hard to know what's posturing and what's actually going on, but things appear to be at a stalemate right now. Here's the issue as I understand it: The Nats don't want to go above -- or far above slot -- with this pick. The Crow camp (the Hendricks Brothers) feel he deserves more than that and made it clear prior to the draft (there were rumors to this effect on draft day) that they did not want to stay within the slotting system. As a result, there's no deal as of now and with time running short, it might not happen at all.

No. 11 Justin Smoak: This might be the next one to become official. Word was a deal between Smoak and the Rangers was imminent, that it would be north of $3 million and would likely include a big-league deal. Rangers said no such deal is forthcoming, but we'll see...

No. 20 Josh Fields: Nothing here, but as I mentioned, not as much pressure as the M's would control his rights for longer.

No. 23 Allan Dykstra: Injury + Boras= bad news. This is the one guy I'd say won't sign by deadline time.

No. 28: Gerrit Cole: Yankees said this isn't going to happen. Why don't I trust that 100 %

This is why MLB needs to have a rookie pay scale (same with the NFL). There is no way this kids are worth what the agents are saying they are worth, right now.

I'm not sure if it's possible in MLB. The club already has so much control over the player (the club can control the player for his first 9-10 years with an organization, while in like the NBA they can only hold them for 3-4). It would be utterly unfair to the players to give them no power over salaries for most of their career.
