Pedro Alvarez is a Pirate, $6 million and no big league contract!

What the hell is going on? 6 milion + signing bonus'??? When did this happen? Is this the first year? The biggest MLB signing bonus' i'd ever heard of before today was like 3 million or something.

Price got 5.6M last year

Yeah... this year does seem a bit crazy. If you nabbed a top talent, you really had to open up the pocketbook this year.

Yes the local nine got a lot better today. Best high school pitcher and hitter.

Psh, UCLA got the best HS pitcher. But KC has gotten the best HS hitter two straight years.

Vitters was the best hitter. I have came around.

Far as I'm concerned, if you are a HS player getting that kind of money, you better be an A-Rod or Griffey type talent and be good enough to go basically right into the MLB.

Heh, well Moustakas was rated better by both KC and Wilken.

Yeah, you are right. But, you can't be a GM and think that way anymore.

Geez, Hosmer got $6 million too.

Considering inflation from one year to the next, is Hosmer 1.875 times better than Josh Vitters and 1.5 times better than Moustakas?

Yeah that is a nice chunk of change. But, the Royals had to do it. They are finally starting to draw a little again. They cannot just let the kid walk. The media would kill them for it down here.

Wow:

Hosmer was being advised by super agent Scott Boras, but insisted before the draft that the final decision would be his and his alone. It’s believed that he took the deal against Boras’ advice.

What could he realistically have hoped for beyond 6 million dollars? That seems pretty dang good to me.

And that's Boras working against what is best for his client and his wishes.

I agree that they need to implement slotting just like the NBA. 6 million and up just seems ridiculous for unproven players. What is it going to be next year 7 million and up guaranteed contracts? So who were the players in the 1st not signed by their teams?

A guaranteed multi-millionaire with his 4 years of college paid for by MLB (if he doesn't pan out) is turning that down to better his chances of earning more money spurning a team that is always willing to go well over slot by risking injury, bombing out of school, and/or falling apart as a pitcher?

Bad decision if he goes to UCLA, IMO.

Boras isn't doing what it is best for his client's long-term well-being, IMO. He has the opportunity to set-up his financial security for life.

how is the kid's decision boras's fault?

Why? You are basically taking payment for the next 3-6 years when you have no leverage in your contract. I don't think these are unreasonable at all considering the revenue MLB teams generate.

Boras is poison for the game.

Boras is great for baseball.

I tend to agree with this position. If baseball teams are willing to pay through the nose for these players, then I say good on Boras for getting top dollar for his clients.

However, when Boras' strategies backfire and it puts his client in a bad position, such as Matt Harrington (whose Wikipedia page looks like it was made by a family member), then I tend to think he's overreaching and getting a bit too greedy.

i dont know why 6 million is fair market value for 37 year old piece of trash Mark Loretta but not for a kid with great talent who could be a superstar

if i own a club, i'm allocating a really reasonable part of my budget to the draft; just keep selecting the best talent each round, signability be damned

Exactly. I'll never understand when teams like the pirates are stingy on the draft and then trade and pay for the corpse of matt morris. That was the difference between BJ Upton or Bryan Bullington.

as an experiment, some team should use the BA draft top 200 as a checklist, go like 6-7% under each draftees initial demands and just restrain themselves from signing Gary Matthews Jr or Jason Marquis/whichever reliever they plan on signing that offseason and see where that gets them.

probably set up pretty nicely for a few years down the line, is my guess.

gary matthews has a .637 OPS but he's really good in the clubhouse i hear and everyone really likes his nickname so the 9.5 mil is a bargain imo

I think its a percentage game for both sides. The problem with Boras is that he has no risk - its all on the kid. For the owners who aren't willing to pay, they need to invest in better scouts.
