It might not be a popular choice, but I would think Theriot needs to be in the top 5. He has been consistently good all year while playing every day, unlike Soriano, Soto, and Edmunds.

Honorable Mention: Rich Harden. Hasn't played for us much yet, of course. But if he continues to pitch near this level of quality upto and through October, he was an amazing pick up who really met (at least met) expectations.

Reed Johnson is so underrated but has most likely single handedly won us 2-4 games this year because of a catch or clutch hit.

This is the same as it always is.

Ramirez, Zambrano, Lee, Soriano, Soto have all been as productive as you could have expected them to be.

It's how Theriot, Dempster, Edmonds have overperformed expectations that put us in the position we're in now instead of closely bunched in the standings with Milwaukee as we'd have projected.

Whether or not that's what determines value is debatable.

Everything considered, I'm inclined to say Dempster.

honorable mention to theriot, who's been excellent, fontenot who's been the best bench player in the league, soto who's provided excellent defense and good pop which was sorely lacking last year, and basically every other cub except for ward and bob howry.

Why Zambrano over Dempster? Dempsters numbers seem to be better across the board than Z's

i think z's offensive numbers make up the slight difference in the pitching numbers.

Surprising to not see Johnson in anyone's top 5 =\

I don't think he plays enough as an offensive player.

Right... but, it's what he does with his playing time that translates into victories. I think he is well deserving of a top 5 spot regardless of being a starter or not.

Reed Johnson is nowhere near the conversation for MVP

Again, it's most valuable, not most underrated or overlooked or most-clutch or anything else like that...

See pet peeve thread

But yea, here's my list...

Dempster

Z

Soriano

Ramirez

I could not agree more. When I saw the list of the original 5, my first thought was that Theriot was not there. He does play every day and his defense is good. He's often and unsung hero, not a lot of flash, but I don't think the Cubs are where they are without him.

He doesn't play everyday, his defense isn't that good, and he's only marginally productive.

I'd prefer everyday players as MVP candidates. The VORP numbers are giving cumulative season totals, but over the last 2 and a half months, especially given the lack of power from the middle of the order, I'd have to go with Edmonds. Yes, you can argue he is a platoon player, but his contributions have been astounding. Can I nominate the Edmonds/Johnson platoon as MVP?

Also - under/over on how many days until Edmonds passes Lee and Ramirez in HRs?

Soriano. The team is completely different with him in the lineup and our record with vs. without him reflects that. If he was healthy all year I think we would have at least 3-6 more victories than we have now. Having his bat back in the lineup has made such a huge difference the past few weeks.

However, I am not sure you can give it to a guy who has been injured as much as he has. My second choice is Dempster, he's come out of no where and is having a Cy Young caliber season.

WPA:

1. Ramirez

2. Dempster

3. Zambrano

4. Edmonds

5. Soriano

Any chance you could splice that ranking for position players with the Edmonds/Johnson platoon as a single entry for the Cubs this season?

He plays more than anyone else on that list, his defense is good enough, and he's productive enough to be the starting SS on the most productive team in the majors.
