Any idea if Rich Hill is staying in Mesa or going to Iowa this week?

I don't think we'll know till tomorrow's Mesa game unless the Chicago media picks it up. There has been no transaction yet to take him off Iowa's DL. For now, Mitch Atkins is scheduled to pitch on Friday (Iowa's first game back from their all-star break).

Woa, Larry Suarez is starting for Mesa. I was under the impression he had had Tommy John surgery in April. Either he is the fastest healer ever or that was misinformation.

Wouldn't it be more likely that MiLB.com has the names wrong? They aren't exactly surgically accurate when it comes to Mesa.

While true, they generally get the opening lineup right since it's handed to them. Everything else is their best guess based on numbers, names on the back, etc.

I'm trying to see where I got the info on Suarez having TJS (i.e. was it just Arizona Phil or was it a more credible source like BA).

Larry Suarez faced 3 batters before he was lifted (hit his pitch count, probably). He struck 2 out and then walked the third batter. Julio Pena, who had a 0.54 ERA going into the game, came in and promptly hit a batter and served up a 3-run HR.

Suarez' final line: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Midway through 3, Matt Cerda is 2 for 2 with a double. Those are the only 2 hits Mesa has.

Yowza, Mesa gives up 4 in the 3rd on 4 throwing errors, all of which occured during the first 3 batters of the inning:

Luis Sanchez singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman John Contreras. Luis Sanchez scores. Throwing error by right fielder Nelson Perez. Throwing error by third baseman John Contreras.

Carlos George reaches on throwing error by shortstop Junior Lake.

With Joseph Paciorek batting, Carlos George steals (4) 2nd base.

Joseph Paciorek reaches on throwing error by shortstop Junior Lake. Carlos George scores.

Nothing like bunting and scoring on the same play.

Weird with it listed in that order. But I'm guessing the 3B threw the ball into RF, where inturn the RF threw wildly to 3B.

The AAA all-star game can be followed on game tracker here: link. It's also supposed to be on ESPN 2, I think. I-Cubs representatives are pitchers Mike Burns and JR Mathes.

Esmailin Caridad gets the start for Tennessee, Hung-Wen Chen (not Grant Johnson) gets the start for Daytona. I've edited the probable starters post to display the actual starters.

And HWC gives up a solo HR in the top of the first, Daytona is down 1-0.

MiLB.com has Rich Hill on Daytona's roster. That doesn't mean they're accurate.

This time they are though:

The Daytona Cubs are pleased to announce the addition of Rich Hill to the team’s roster for a Major League rehab appearance. Hill, who has been pitching in Mesa, joins the Cubs for a start on Thursday, July 17 against the Fort Myers Miracle.

HW Chen thus far: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR. Daytona leads it 2-1 on the power of a Darwin Barney 2-run HR.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but what kind of reportoire does Chen have? He seems like a guy to definitely keep an eye on anyway.

This is very strange. I hope we aren't rushing him back.

A Bleacher Bums poster who goes to tons of Tenn games posted the following last week. Note that the gush report was after his last start, in which he had a career high of 6 K's. Usually he's a 1-2 K guy, so probably his change and breaking ball were working better than normal. Either that or his velocity was higher than usual. Still, it's interesting to read:

"I saw Esmilano [sp] Caridad pitch and he is probably the most impressive pitcher the Smokies have had this year other than Jose Ceda. His fastball touches 95-96,he has a very good changeup, and throws a very good breaking ball. He's very small though and his control is erratic."

Not sure the poster is the greatest analyst, or is remembering everybody. But he's seen lots of Donnie Veal over the last two seasons, and has seen Samardz a few times too. His velocity reports on Samardz were never as fast as that, and i can recall some questions about the gun there. Surprising that he thought the breaking ball and change looked good, given that Caridad is a no-K guy. But he's been somewhat interesting, and has improved over the summer.

That's his final line.

Rebel Ridling is killing the ball tonight, with two doubles and a home run.
