This means for you guys that want to see Harden pitch, outside of the area, better get ready to go to the local bar for the game and Liquid Lunch. :good: Prediciton 6 IP 3 H 0 ER

I keep reading about going to the local bar for games I can't see at home. Am I missing something? Why does a bar get games that I don't?

No. There will be no local bars showing it either. People outside the Chicago area are screwed when it comes to Saturday baseball and the Cubs.

Really? I've watched FOX games that would otherwise be blacked out at bars before.

Yeah, I can't believe that's true. My bars carry out of market games.

Most every bar carries out of market games. The question is specifically about out of market games on Saturday afternoons. I know I've been to bars on Saturday afternoon trying to catch a Cubs game instead of the typical Mets, Yankees or Phillies game, but it's unavailable. That includes local dive bars, as well as espnzone and Champs types places with tons of feeds. The clincher vs Houston in 2003 annoyed the hell out of me.

Slightly off-topic here to ask this, but since it came up: Why does everyone automatically blame Lou for trotting out Marmol too much? I know the buck stops with the skipper, but I was under the impression he delegated most bullpen decisions to Larry. Not true?

Lou decides what relievers are used.

Of course he has the final say, but my point is that if Piniella delegates bullpen decisions to his pitching coach moreso than most managers, and I've read plenty to suggest that's true, then shouldn't Rothschild bear some of the blame for abusive usage patterns?

Part of the reason I ask is because I recall Rothschild coming under fire years ago (albeit in the blogosphere & misc sports commentary) for being partially culpable for Dusty's pitcher abuse. The counterargument then was that Dusty never ceded much control to Rothschild and didn't consult with him or rely on him to monitor pitchers' health as much as he should have. This came as some relief to those who were worried when Piniella hired Rothschild, if Rothschild really wasn't to blame at all for the PAPs racked up during the Dusty years.

Just was curious more than anything why no one even mentions Rothschild being complicit, at least, in Marmol's abuse, and I tend to agree with everyone his usage pattern has been terrible this year.

I don't know what kind of decisions you think he delegates, but Lou decides who goes in the game. Sure, Larry could probably do more to protect his young arm, as he's never shown an inclination to do that with others. But the responsibility lies with Lou.

Yes, I get the 'buck stops here' kind of argument. Fair enough. It pretty much boils down to this hypothetical dugout conversation after watching Marquis walk two guys in the 7th:

Lou: Get Marmol up.

Larry: Ok.

Larry's ideal answer: Lou, this will be the 3rd day in the row and this isn't a high leverage situation, how bout we get Michael up instead?

I would expect any pitching coach to monitor his arms and assist his manager in spreading the bullpen load where it needs to be spread, even if it conflicts with the manager's initial choice of guys to put in the ballgame. I suppose we'll never know if Larry actually is doing this but Lou is overriding him.

My guess is that any discussion of that nature takes place before the game. The manager should be going into the game knowing who is and is not available out of the bullpen.

So, mlb.tv subscribers are screwed too (I don't live in Chicago)?? Figures, I pay MLB every damn year like a fool for enhanced mlb.tv, and either the streaming is forked-up, or the Saturday game I want to watch is blacked-out. Why I keep paying for this is beyond me...though Mosaic is cool when it actually works.

It's because FOX is paying MLB a buttload of money every year to make it so you can't watch anything else but their game.

It's an outmoded structure that needs to go away.

Saturday's game will air on MLBTV because the Fox blackout doesn't start until the 1:10 starts and the Cubs game is at 1:05.

I can understand being upset that people were saying Lou is just as bad as Dusty. But the fact is, Marmol is clearly being used as much as anyone in the league, and his performance his falling off. It's completely appropriate for Cub fans to complain about their best reliever's arm being burned out. And that's on Lou.

Well I agree that he shouldn't be used as often and I don't even mind sensible complaining, it just got ridiculous, but whatever it's a game thread, I should realize that and just not post in them. That's my own fault. But he's not our best reliever. #34 might have something to say about that.

Welll, maybe I was a bit hasty then. Nah, I'm sure streaming will be screwed up somehow. Thanks for the heads-up...

For what it's worth; I saw Harden throwing his first side session with us today before the gates opened. The only thing I have to say is he throws hard and he makes it look really easy. It was pretty cool to watch. And the good news is when he walked away from the mound his arm was still attached.

But were you able to confirm that it stayed on once he returned to the clubhouse?

Well, yes. He came out and was running sprints a little later and it was still attached then. However, i cannot speculate beyond that point.

I'm gonna do my best to summarize the blackout deal using both info from this thread and what I know about blackouts. Here goes:

1. The game is not being carried by FOX http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=chc

So the fact that you have gone to your local bar in the past and watched out of market FOX games doesn't tell you anything about whether or not you will see tomorrow's games. Because it isn't carried by FOX, those of us outside Chicago are subject to the whim of DirecTV and whether they will let us have the CSN Chicago broadcast.

2. It is not being played within the strict limits of the time window of the FOX blackout. So, there is a chance that the game will be shown on the "expanded packages" available to some businesses through DirecTV or maybe even to regular EI subscribers. No one really knows for sure though because...

3. EI usually blacks out all games prior to 7pm EDT on Saturday even though technically it would seem that they do not have to do so. I am EI subscriber so I, along with many others who have posted in this thread, can personally confirm that one. Calling DirecTV for an explanation is either enfuriating or hilarious, depending on how you look at it.

4. The EI schedule actually shows the game (which it usually doesn't do for games blacked out by FOX), but it shows up on ch. 696 (CSN Bay Area). EI channels normally run from 720 through the 740s. http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageIF.jsp?assetId=3160004

So, basically I don't think anybody can be absolutely sure whether those of us outside Chicago will get to see the game or not. There is hope, but based on my experience with EI and MLB blackouts in general I'm not holding my breath.

What FOX can't seem to grasp is that I'm not going to watch that game. I'm going to do everything in my power to not watch it.

If they'd put a little bit of brain power into this thing, they'd make a ton of people happy. . . happy customers mean more money. . . . .why is this so hard?

The FOX black never had made sense and it never will.

I posted this in the game thread, but concerning the availability of Saturday's game I have concluded that:

All year it has been the 3:55 (EST) games that FOX has blacked out. Tomorrow's game was supposed to be 3:55(EST), but got moved to 1:05 eastern. But, ESPN projected schedule still lists the cubs game as a FOX broadcast, which makes no sense. I'm thinking that they forgot to remove the FOX tag when they changed the time and it will be available tomorrow.

Note: I'm talking about availability to mlb.tv, I don't have EI, but I would imagine if it's not blacked out on mlb.tv then it's not on EI either.

I could be completely wrong, but that seems the most likely scenario to me.

chumbleys beer house in broadripple used to be a cubs bar

Chumley's, Joe's on 86th St., Ale Emporium, Fox and Hound or Champps should all have the game tomorrow in the Indy area.

I'd prefer not to make that drive although I do like Chumley's...I know Joe's and Bubbaz over in Camby will be playing it. They always have the Cubs games on. Its not like Indy has another baseball team to root for. I was talking about a house party, and while I will be going to one later that night looks like I'll be all my lonesome unless I wanna watch it with non Cubs fans. Not a big deal.

No Pirates fans with their AAA team there? I know that their minor league system isn't very good, but I just assumed the Pirates might have atleast a little bit of a following in Indy.
