CUBS WIN!

27 pitches for Woody makes me worry about his availability if we actually need him tomorrow, though.

He'll be fine for tomorrow. That many pitches pretty much rules out 3 days in a row though, so hopefully we can win another blowout one of those 2 days.

I'm reminded of my reaction when my father told me about the Zito contract. I guffawed. How many pitchers allow 300 baserunners in a season, anyway?

Win #50 had to have come in mid to late July last year.

July 19. 9-8 win over the Giants, Lilly got the win.

July 19, with a win at home against these same Giants behind none other than the Bulldog, Ted Lilly.

July 19th. Ted Lilly was the starting pitcher that day against the Giants, and the Cubs scored 9 runs that day as well.

Of course, it wasn't completely the same. The Giants scored 8 last year.

When anyone asks for an example of Edmonds making a play look harder than it was, point to that play right there.

Did he take a bad route to the ball or take it easy on the way to the ball and just misjudged it? We only got one replay at the stadium and it wasn't a good one.

Thoughts/observations from the game:

-Just like last year, there were a ton of Cubs fans there and we made a lot of noise. A couple of "Fukudome" chants broke out and a bunch of "Let's Go Cubbies" chants which the Giants fans tried, and generally failed, to drown out.

-Zito got booed by the Giants fans, though not too heavily. Like some of the Cubs fans around me, I cheered Zito.

-Lilly got a couple of loud ovations after coming off the field after the eighth inning and when he got taken out of the game.

-I was so happy I got to see Woody even though he was a bit rusty and wasn't at his best.

-There were a couple moran Giants fans who were pulling for beanballs in the ninth and were hoping that Lee was hurt when he fouled the ball off his foot in the same inning. They also shouted at some lady to put down a sign she was holding up in between the top and bottom of the eighth inning. Yes, this was while the Cubs were warming up in the field. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, they yelled for the Cubs fans who were standing to sit down. Of course, I also heard one of them talk about a Rule 5 draft pick (didn't hear who exactly) and saying something about how Rule 5 picks were guys who didn't get picked in the regular draft.

Checked the box score - 9 BB! What a refreshing change from past Cub teams, years past, no way would they have allowed Zito to pitch himself into trouble. We all knew if given the chance Zito would pitch himself into trouble, I glad the Cubs knew this as well.

I was only able to stay up for 3 innings, but that was enough to see first hand that Barry Zito isnt just a guy whose hit a streak of bad luck, hes gone the Dontrelle Willis rout, and I dont think he'll be coming back.

A little of both. He actually started in on the ball and circled around back gingerly before realizing he had to pick up speed to get there, and couldn't make it in time.

Certainly a refreshing change from years past. But it's "par for the season" in 2008.

Cubs lead the NL with 340 BB, STL is in 2nd with 337, but they also lead the Cubs by 7 in IBB. This version of the Cubs has been incredibly patient, and it's the single most satisfying "little thing" about the way they've gone about playing this year.

Dusty got correctly assailed for his views on hitting philosophy, I wish Lou would get some credit for the philosophy that he's helped change.

I believe he has.
