How does Tony Pena Jr. have a spot on a major league roster?

he's a great fielder, but fielding does not make up for a completely unacceptable bat. last year he was very bad; this year he's probably on pace to be one of the worst-hitting regulars in major league history. .366 OPS pretty much tells the story, but other stats - .079 EqA, -15.8 runs above replacement player, -19.6 VORP. that is mind-boggling.

my vote goes to this guy.

you got to be in the majors to be the worst in the majors

he played for the tigers today.

ahh ... still one at-bat plus something like 6 in 2003 isn't enough to me. Real question is why the heck was he called up.

I think the funniest part is the Royals traded for Pena because they thought he would be an upgrade over Angel Berroa. It's not like he was just in their system and they didn't have any other options.

I didn't think some of those guys were still in baseball. Take out he first week and C. Patterson has to be near the top.

Seriously, what happened to Barrett? He just flat out lost his batting stroke after leaving the Cubs.

He never had one before coming to the Cubs. His improvement was drastic and the decline equally so. It probably makes sense.

Actually, it seems to me like he lost his stroke while still with the Cubs. He wasn't hitting like he used to at the time he was traded. It may just be the wear and tear of catching; other catchers have also fallen off quickly, although maybe not quite as dramatically (if memory serves, Jody Davis was like that to some extent as well).

It's just odd that the drastic increase and drastic decrease coincided so closely with his arrival and departure from the Cubs. I'm not implying anything...I don't know why it happened, I don't know if the park, or the coaches, or whatever had anything to do with it. I just find it curious.

I have a friend who's a huge Royals fan and he would always keep me updated on Tony Pena Jr.'s status

The amazing thing about Tony Pena is that he has two IBB walks this year. Yes. The man who makes outs 8 and half times out of 10 was intentionally walked twice. Thankfully both times bit the other manager in the ass.

In conclusion, Tony Pena Jr. is the worst hitting position player in the majors, but might not be the worst all around player in the majors.

EDIT: Strangely enough they don't show his IBB on his Cube page, even though I distinctly remember seeing one of them happen on Gameday.

Put any of these guys in a uniform that has a bird on a bat in the front of it and watch their OPS fly over .900.

Couldn't agree more. Abraham Nunez, anyone? You could name about 10 more I'm sure. And don't even get me started on the pitchers.
