We can win this if Dempster pitches well. The Cubs have defeated a lot of ace quality pitchers this year, theres no reason we can't scratch across a run or two and somehow win. It won't be easy but we can do it.

What a difference a year makes in attitude around this place. In a good way.

As you all know, I'm a pessimistic prick. It takes a LOT for me to make a statement like that. But I really am confident that we can generate something tonight. And if we don't we'll probably do it tomorrow. Being 20 games over .500 in June gives you that type of perspective.

If the Cubs go on a 7 game losing streak, I'll probably go back to negativity, just so you know :)

Maybe you should go lie down for a while.

Cubs hopefully can take two of three, I think this is their toughest test of the three games down there. If there ever was a game to bet the under this would appear to be it.

My mathematical theorum will be given a severe testing today.

My theorum:

Cubs offense > all left-handed pitching.

Wow. This isn't something I'd have expected to read on this board until this year.

Prediction: Two runs will win this game.

Probably its hardest such test since Hamels.

I like to think the worst part of that 2004 Zambrano-Kazmir trade was that Kazmir was likely already better than Zambrano at the time.

Does anyone know if any of the Rays players will be serving their suspensions from the CoCo Crisp incident during this series? Either way, its almost a guarantee that Crawford will be rested 1 of the 3 games.

I think I read that Crawford will miss today's game because of his suspension.

Lineup prediction:

Johnson CF

Theriot SS

Lee 1B

Ramirez 2B

Soto DH

Fukudome RF

DeRosa 2B

Murton LF

Blanco C

Gonna be awfully crowded up the middle of the infield.

Should be an interesting game. Hopefully Demp is still on his roll and we can try to scratch something out.

As long as nobody tries to hit one down the 3rd base line, we'll be OK.

And people are going to talk about Theriot's range at SS, now he has to cover both SS and 3rd base. Now his range factor will take a hit.

I went over to that Rays site, and looked at their game thread, and found this little blurb

screw the Cubs and their "Fans" all over the country....when they are losing no one goes out to see them

This kid either

A. Knows nothing of Cubs Nation

or

B. Seems to be confusing us with White Sox fans.

Or their own fans... Amazes me.

Funny stuff from the Rays board:

Let that irony sink in a minute...good stuff.

Edited to add - Crap, I'm too slow. Classic, stuff, though.

Shields is tough to hit. But, he is coming off his worst outing of the season and a short suspension. Sonnanstine should be beatable, especially with Zambrano on the hill. Kazmir? Should see the return of Murton tonight. I hope he has a good game against a tough lefty.

It also appeared as though Shields might have roughed up his pitching shoulder a bit in the Coco Crisp brawl.

Doesn't look good when we are referring to ourselves as "Cub Nation" either

I'm confident the Cubs can win if they pour the runs on. The Rays' pitching outside of Kazmir and the closer really isn't all that impressive, but their bats love to smack in the runs in bunches to offset the runs they give up.

The Devil Rays are not a great offensive team. They're 8th in the AL in runs (6th in OPS) and 17th in the majors in runs (13th in OPS). Pretty much exactly like the 2007 Cubs offense, even down to the exact same OBP number.

Their pitching is better than their offense. None of the starters stand out besides Kazmir, but they are pretty decent. Their back end of the bullpen is very good, especially Wheeler and Percival.
