hahaha Bud Selig can barely read the teleprompter. It gets worse every time he gets up to the podium.

I see we have another thing that ESPN can mess up. I guess I shouldn't complain. At least the draft is on TV.

Does someone mind putting up the picks as they happen? At least for the first round and maybe the sandwich?

So far:

TB: Tim Beckham

Pit: Pedro Alvarez

KC: Eric Hosmer

Any mods who are around can edit them into Raisin's first post in the thread.

(I say as I'm on my way out for lunch)

i'm guessing most of the problem is that these espn guys have no idea who these players are. i mean, they probably don't know much about sean gallagher or reed johnson, they're not going to know squat about these HS kids.

No surprises thus far. I'll edit my first post now on, I was called off for a mtg.

I know its cool to bash ESPN, but can they do differently? The knock all along about covering the draft is that not many people know who these guys are.

Oh man, I'm so excited. I had a job interview last year during the draft, so I couldn't watch it.

Here's to Crow falling.

What the crap, I had a job interview during last year's draft too.

Lol, the giants draft Posey. No way in hell do they pay him. See you next year, Buster.

They should reduce it to 2 minutes (I had to say it again)

Yeah, 5 is a bit much. I don't know if 2 is enough to make it decent TV, but there's clearly a lot of unnecessary dead time and filler.

I think they could just talk about the kid drafted a little bit (no need to interview), then talk about how he might fit into that team's system in comparison with other prospects.

To do that they'd actually need to retain people that know more than a thumbnail sketch about the different systems. They'd probably have to hire some BA/BP types. Gammons, Olney et al don't pay much attention beyond the top 5.

the new reason to draft college players over high school players: The interviews.

"Hey Eric, it's me Karl Ravech from ESPN's Baseball Tonight, how's it going?"

"AHJFHKJFHKSJHKFJHZKHHJHKFSJHFKJSHKFJHKJSHFKJSHKFJSHKFJHSKK"

"Hey Buster, how you feeling?"

"Quite well, thank you. Very excited about this process, it's quite lovely"

The time between picks would make more sense if teams could trade draft picks -- which I think they should allow at some point. First they'll need MLBPA to agree on fixed slot money for draft picks (ala the NBA) and then if they open up draft pick trades, it would certainly make things interesting for the teams and better television.

From yesterday when Goldestein thought the Giants would take White Beckham:

Chris (Harrisonburg, VA): As a Giants fan, I'm not overly impressed with Gordon Beckham, should I be?

Kevin Goldstein: You're a Giants fan, you should be impressed with pretty much any carbon-based lifeform with anything resembling hitting skills.

Analysis of ESPN2 coverage of Amateur Baseball Draft:

- Selig stumbles over name of draftee

- "experts" break down draftee

- terrible interview of draftee

- awkward baseball related chit-chat...

repeat
