Has anyone else noticed that the Reds are building a monster in Cincy? (I know, I know... Dusty Baker blah, blah, blah...)

That pitching staff, if it continues to grow and stay healthy (I know, I know... Dusty Baker blah, blah, blah...) could be unreal. Harang, Cueto, Volquez, and Bailey would be a pretty stellar front 4. And that lineup does not look bad, either. Bruce, Votto, Encarnacion, and Phillips is not bad. You'd have to imagine that the Reds will get a useful prospect out of Griffey, and if they deal Dunn for younger players, they have a chance to be very scary in just a couple of years.

how about the Reds in 2008?

probable 2nd place finisher and wild card contender is the way I see things unfolding, despite dugout dice throwing toothpick chewer

Jocketty is the GM for the Reds now. Dusty won't last through 2009 (assuming he makes it through this season and offseason). Jocketty is a competent GM who will replace Dusty with a competent manager.

Yup, Reds will be a thorn in our side for awhile probably. But then again, so will the Brewers.

Unfortunately, our farm is embarrassingly bad right now, so we'll have to keep spending to keep up.

I think they're the scariest opponent for us in '08, to say nothing of '10.

I think the scariest team would be the team with the 2nd best record in the NL.

Should the Rays be more afraid of the Blue Jays than the Yankees? The Sox more afraid of the Twins than the Indians and Tigers? The Phillies more afraid of the Marlins than the Mets? The only thing that I'm afraid of with regards to the Cardinals is that they're not completely out of it by the deadline and wind up getting a Matt Holliday into their lineup for his prime years. The Cardinals team as currently constructed is nothing to fear unless you're crossing at a stoplight.

If we didn't have an 8 game handicap, I might consider them a threat.

I've seen 8 game leads disappear far to often to be comfortable though. Actually the Brewers can tell us a thing or two about 8 games leads that evaporate 8-)

That's because the Brewers had one formidable starter that's very, very prone to injury.

I am not worried about the Reds.

Jocketty is no longer in St. Louis because he has no desire to even think about embracing statistics based player evaluation. He and Dusty are about as perfect a match for each other as you can find. Jocketty is, however, much more intelligent about baseball players than Dusty.

Last year on June 1 we were 7.5 games back, but our run differential was +8 to Milwaukee's +11. Right now on June 2 we're 11 games better than Cincy Pythagorean-wise. It's not really comparable.

I don't think anybody is really afraid of the Yankees right now. The Rays should be more afraid of the Red Sox, forget about the Blue Jays. But the difference is that teams like the Yankees, Detroit and the Mets should be playing better, but are underperforming. So yes, you do still worry about teams like that. The Reds however are probably performing like they should, which is still under .500 and 8 games out.

Well, they've probably performed how they should have thus far, but replacing Corey Patterson with Jay Bruce is a ridiculous upgrade(offensively at least. I'm sure Bruce is worse than Corey on D, but I'd have a hard time believing he's not a significant overall upgrade) As I said, the fact that the Reds are 8 games out is why I'm not remotely concerned about them. If you squint a little, you can say they're equal talent-wise, but under no circumstances(barring injuries) can I come up with a scenario in which the Reds are 8 games better than the Cubs over the next ~100 games.

Prior-Wood-Zambrano-Clement-Guzman is gonna be an unbeatable rotation for years to come.

Don't forget Cruz.

Closer. His 140 pound frame can't handle starting.

The Blue Jays are getting some incredibly good pitching this year. That's a team to look out for if they can swing a deal and get a Holliday type hitter at the deadline. Their offense is the only thing holding them back right now, and I think there will be a plethora of hitters available at the deadline.

Out of all the teams in the division, the Reds certainly scare me most long-term.

But, as I remind my fellow Blackhawks fans constantly, there are still a lot of intermediate steps to me reached.

Young talent + time = wins is not a guaranteed equation.
