There's some fun lines on this team...

Brian Schnider .259/.328/.321

Carlos Delgado .215/.294/.387

Luis Castillo .259/.361/.322

Oliver Perez 89 ERA+ 1.547 WHIP

Mike Pelfrey 76 ERA+ 1.776

We're supposed to hate this team. Let's get to it.

I do hate that team, they just suck so bad it's almost criminal to make fun of them. I really do hate them though, and again it's a New York thing, not so much their players. They all have this false sense of superiority, as if Manaya has put together this juggernaut of a team that demands our respect regardless of who we cheer for.

Go to hell, New York

This rivalry is dieing quickly now that they arent in our division anymore. I bet the Mets don't even consider us rivals.

Ask Ron Santo. He'd beat you with his own leg if you told him they weren't a rival.

They probably would think of the Cards as a bigger rival since they were the 2 best NL East teams during the 80s.

Actually, the rivalry could become better now as both teams (hopefully) look to be good for the next 3-4 years.

I don't know about the Mets staying good for 3-4 years. Their core group is relatively young, but a lot of key components are very old. Santana and Maine are good, and Perez is inconsistent but decent. The rest of the staff is a huge question. Their RS/RA is nearly 1/1, with both stats sitting roughly in the middle of the league. They are a pretty mediocre-to-average team that doesn't really do anything all that well.

I've got a couple friends who are just going bonkers about this team. I still don't hate the Mets nearly as much as I've hated the Yankees though. They are kind of inconsequential.

Yet its hard to be a rival when you play 6 times a year and don't reside in the same time zone or division. The Mets only came to Wrigley 2 games this year. How can you be a rival of them?

'69? What about '89? The Cubs and Mets rivalry was really second only to the Cubs/Cards rivalry on the north side from the 60's until '93.

The rivarly has faded significantly. But there's definitely some leftover animosity when the teams do meet, and I think a playoff series or two could spark some more interest. NY/Chicago is a natural rival in any sport, or other venture. As a NJ resident I'd much rather see them come out here at least twice a year, instead of having to road trip to Philly, Pittsburgh and DC to catch games.

Peter Gammons suggested in a blog today that it may be time to blow up the Mets and trade Beltran and others for a nifty package of prospects. Another option he gave is trading for a Hatteberg/Millar/Freel type.

I say kill two birds with one stone and trade Mr. Chemistry Jim Edmonds for Beltran.

Send Marquis back to NY, and let them have DeRosa to help with their 2B situation, and Murton to help in the corner OF. Then let them takeover the Pie experiment. Throw Hoffpauier in to make Delgado sweat.

* $0.1M bonus each for All Star, Gold Glove or Silver Slugger

* $0.2M bonus for 4th-place finish in 2006 NL MVP vote

I'd love to have him in CF, but man, the last few years of his contract are not pretty.

Also, can anyone explain the money deferred thing? I remember it was what killed the Diamondbacks for a number of years, but I can't quite remember the mechanics of it.

After June he'll have essentially a 3.5 year 64.5m contract, but the team won't have to pay him that money all at once, they can defer it. This would be no problem for a team like Chicago. Arizona was struggling to grow revenue and that's what hurt them.

Would the obligation to pay that deferred payment transfer to any team who trades for him, or would the Mets still be on the hook for it?

I would assume the obligation to pay the portion he has already accrued would stay with the Mets, while the new team would take on the obligation for the period of the contract yet remaining.

Depending on what it would take to get him, Beltran would be a nice option for CF.

Regardless of what Gammons said, I doubt the Mets punt and enter a fire sale. But if the Mets would do a deal where we send Marquis (which gives the Cubs salary relief), Pie, and another prospect (Ceda, Veal, or someone like that) to the Mets for Beltran, I would do it.

Mets have 0 chance of a fire sale with their new stadium set to open next year. If anything, they might try and re-tool. If not for this year, then next. The only one they could look at trading would probably be Delgado, who sucks anyway.

I am enjoying them sucking. Watching them blow that division last year was fun. I pretty much loathe anything that has to do with New York.

They'll probably trade off their contract year guys, flukey guys they can sell high on, and low floor/high ceiling types who haven't been producing for them. I don't think they'll trade off their big names and prospects.

I'm old enough to remember. In the 1980's the Mets were every bit as hated as the Cards in Chicago.

It's kind of a shame that the reorg has destroyed that rivalry. Mets/Cubs in '84 is my first memorable rivalry moment as a Cub fan. There were bench-clearing brawls, suspensions, the whole bit. It was just amazing.

Think Bulls/Knicks in the Jordan years, only baseball.
