Supposedly Pie is at an all-time low in terms of confidence right now. Gee, I wonder why.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-27-iowa-cubs-chicagomay27,1,6503324.story

It also talks about Murton, Hill, and Marshall.

I found this quote especially annoying-

But if Pie or anyone else expects to be babied, they should not come to Hendry looking for sympathy.

"If they had all played well enough, they'd be here," the Cubs' general manager says bluntly. "We're going to mix and match the roster all year and if someone is productive in Iowa, we'll go get him. It's not about suppressing anyone ...

"You've got to get here and you've got to stay here. You've got to produce. They're in Iowa because they put themselves there."

But it's okay for Johnson to be a black hole against RHP and for Edmonds to be a black hole against everybody?

Then there's this-

Hendry ticks off examples of players who came from Iowa and proved they should stay, like Geovany Soto and Ryan Theriot. He doesn't deny the urgency to win now. "That's the way it should be. We're not playing jacks up here."

What about last year when Theriot was atrocious the entire gd season and he was never in danger of losing a job and was guaranteed a starting role this season even though Cedeno clearly earned it in spring training? Yes Theriot is earning his spot this year, but Hendry looks like a gigantic liar and hypocrite when he spews garbage like that.

Basically, if you don't produce you're going to be held accountable.............unless you're one of Lou or Jim's boys.

Also, why does Marquis still have a spot? I thought you weren't "playing jacks up here"?

Okay, so, in order to keep a roster spot on this this team you have to either produce, get into the good graces of management (no production necessary if you meet this stipulation), or currently be signed to a moronic contract. Okay, that makes perfect sense.

They're out of options, so they get a free pass.

But he just signed Edmonds. And I don't mind Johnson on the roster for LHP, but it seems stupid for me to say that Pie got booted for not producing when we have gotten no production whatsoever from center field against RHP.

that's my problem as well. Pie should have gotten a month straight starting to see if he can produce. Giving him 5 games doesn't give him time to adjust to the faster pitching.

The Hill thing as infruiated me from the moment he was pulled. Yes he was walking people but his ERA was still 4.11. He can walk all the people he wants as long as he strikes the next guy out and doesn't allow a run. He has been our most consistent pitcher the last two years and he's yanked 2 weeks into the season when his ERA is still somewhat good??? That makes absolutely no sense.

"They're changing something with my swing and my stance [getting his leg kick down sooner without dropping his hands too quickly] and I'm going to be better. The GM and Lou told me when I feel good and comfortable I'll be back. But right now I don't think I'll be back soon."

He does not sound confident at all right now. I feel bad for the kid.

I'd love to find out a similar story from another team that continually put their top prospect down then up, then down again, etc., and I'd just hope and pray that the prospect turned out alright in the end.

This Pie situation really freaking sucks though. It truly gets my blood boiling.

Edmonds has started what? 5 games? I want him DFA'd as much as anyone but you can't really say it's the same situation as Pie just yet.

He's got 110 ABs in 33 games this year (Pie had just over 60 ABs in 30 games) and has a sub .500 OPS. Why do his games in SD not count?

I am happy to see a Cub team actually put a priority on winning--nad winning now. If these guys are bonified major leaguers, they will not be down there long.

What they told Pie to work on is correct and it's up to him to take it and run with it. If he continues to wallow in pity, then maybe MLB is too tough for him. I'm sure he'll bounce back once he gets comfortable with the new adjustments.

i was at the i-cubs game yesterday, and my friend and i were wondering if marshall, pie, hill and murton just sit around and bitch about the cubs all the time. they probably do.

If I were them i'd ask to be traded.

I hate that Pie may be low on confidence, but it happens to the best of them. It happened to Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and countless greats (and not-so-greats) in the game. I just don't think that every situation warrants a position handed to a player, whether he is a top prospect or not.

Having said that, it is pretty obvious the Edmonds experiment is not working out - so I'd rather see Pie in there than JE right about now.

well, as of now, nobody's earned cf, so it has to be "handed" to somebody. may as well be the top prospect and not other teams' scraps like johnson and edmonds.

Jimbo should just keep his mouth shut. Saying something like that to the press just isn't smart. It's always easy to come up with examples where you contradicted yourself. Most GMs realize this, and keep quiet. Jim doesn't really seem to get that.

I might buy this if his replacement wasn't hitting 150/190/150.

That's a valid point, of course.

I guess I'm not viewing it so much as Edmonds vs. Pie, as much as Pie needing to get at bats to fix his swing. He's still only 23. I think it's appropriate for him to be in AAA to work on making some big changes that the organization feels he needs to make. There's still a lot of time for him to help the big club in the future.

it's times like these that i turn to joe morgan for my baseball wisdom:

Nick (Chicago): Do you make much of a team's record away from home? The Brewers lead their division with a sub-500 road record and the Tigers also lead their division with an outstanding road record.

Joe Morgan: I don't as much as some people do, and that's because it depends on how you play at the time.

Regardless of where you're playing, if you play poorly you'll lose, and if you play well you'll win.

So there you go folks. the cubs haven't been winning on the road because they haven't been playing as well there.

Joe Morgan is the master at using lots of words to say absolutely nothing.
