HOLY CRAP Seattle and Sonics reach last minute deal. Sorry IMB.

I think the deal is that Bennet and co. are buying out the lease, not that the team is staying

I didn't read that espn link, but this just crossed the wire

“The parties have settled the case. Details of the settlement will be released by the parties.”

The settlement came six days after the trial concluded, and would indicate that the Sonics may be headed to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season.

Yeah, read more carefully, CubbieBum. No mention of the Sonics staying, just that Seattle is getting $75 million.

AP seems to think it would be closer to the $60 million that Bennett says he would lose by staying in Seattle, but he may be willing to go higher just to be done with the mess

Its a bit misleading and bad story because it doesn't explain completely. It's not too stunning they reached an agreement happens a lot in situations like this. Neither side wants to risk losing it all with a Judge's decision so they settle. Heck this even happens in criminal court with plea bargins. The stunning part would be the Sonics staying and the story should have had a paragraph explaining the Sonics are still moving. One of the first rules to journalism writing is never make the read assume something.

I should have realized anyways but in my haste to post since we had just been talking about this I didn't fully think about it.

from beautiful city to well, oklahoma city. ouch.

This is a legit concern. OKC will support the team, but will players come to OKC? Outbidding other teams for players in the NBA doesn't work quite as well as it does in baseball.

Screw Oklahoma City. I know it's not their fault but I still can't believe how scummy this whole mess is. Seattle is getting robbed of their team for no reason whatsoever.

They owner was losing a lot of money with a team that had a terrible lease in a crappy arena, and he sold the organization to a billionaire from a city that had fantastic attendance while hosting a transplant team from another area. What did he think was going to happen?

Seattle isn't getting robbed. They barely even supported the team when the whole S.O.S movement needed them the most.

The fans in Seattle knew the damn S.O.S. never had a chance because this whole abomination is being orchestrated by David Stern. Why should they have a 'movement' (what are they gonna do, sell out the arena for a team they know is moving?) when they know nothing will change?

Stern should be ashamed of himself. No one would stop talking about how wonderful KeyArena is when it opened, now it doesn't meet NBA standards? It's a damn travesty.

Everyone, even Seattle fans, admit that the KeyArena is run down. It's no secret that Stern and the entire NBA wanted the Sonics out of Seattle. They're a bad team in a bad arena with apathetic fans... he'd be a bad commish if he didnt want them to head to an area that will support them.

Eh support goes up and done over the years and is tied almost directly to team success. If Stern took that philosophy all bad teams would be wanting to leave for a new arena every couple of years.

Any idea on what the new team name/colors will be? ESPNews reported that part of the deal was that they couldn't keep the Sonics name or the green and yellow

So I imagine that they will just have a new Seattle Sonics team in a year or two then?

The last thing the NBA needs is expansion. In fact I would be in favor of contraction.

All the name ideas I've heard (all fan made, thank god) have been awful.

I'm just holding out hope the inspiration for your name and logo will come from a summer blockbuster movie like it did with the Toronto Raptors.

The OKC Iron Mans? The Hancocks? The Pandas? Any chance that Chihuahua movie will be huge?
