What a great story.

But man...130 pitches in a 7 run blowout? That's Dusty-esque.

I saw he was at 97 after 7, and man that's a tough call. You know they haven't been high stress pitches, and he was in the windup for most of the time, but that's still a lot for a young arm in a game that is well in hand. At least he got the no-no so it wasn't completely in vain.

I'm happy for Lester, he deserves it.

However, I'm going to be annoyed at the fact that this will give Boston fans one more reason to be annoying.

"We gaht da last two no hittahs!!!!"

Or whatever. But good for Lester, for sure. Good pitching

Wait, John Lester got a no hitter? Sorry, I have been watching ESPN all night and must have missed that news.

Geez, that last pitch is burned into my brain forever I have seen it so many times. Yeah, no hitter, he had cancer, good stuff the first 42 times you showed it now move on already.

if i were a manager, i couldn't tell a pitcher who was 3 outs from a no-no that his night is done. tito is a very good manager; i think he did the right thing here.

yeah, you know it's wrong, but he wants it, the fans want it, the media wants it, and no one will ever blame you for that, even if it costs you games down the road. Baseball is enough of a game that people still make decisions like that.

Has a pitcher ever been taken out of a no-hit game just due to a pitch count? What was the team that threw a non-no but had like 5 pitchers do it? Was that due to a weather delay? I don't care how many pitches you have, if you have a no-hitter going, you should never be taken out unless you are just coming back from a major injury.

Yeah ESPN was esstatic when he got close because it meant the could show a Red Sox game for the 30th time this year. It's great and everything and can understand it but I was still pissed they went away from a 4-2 Cubs game for a 7-0 blow out. There's one or two no-hitters every year and while its a great feat its not as big as everyone makes it out to be.

Oh and congrats to Lester ... even though I had to hear my Red Sox fan roommate cheer and his fiance cheer as if she actually knew what was going on.

Pretty sure Houston did that a couple of years ago

You're kidding, right?

You're complaining that ESPN went away from a Cubs game in May to show a potential no-hitter, and by a 24 year old cancer survivor, no less? ESPN broke away from a game that was just like every other game this day to show history, and you're actually downplaying it?

(Cue the Sabersheep jumping in to point out that a no-hitter is meaningless...)

Astros-Yankees in 2003.

ESPN's annoyingly gushy recap.

Oswalt went down with a groin injury in that game.

I tell you one thing, if I was a pitcher there would be only one non-Cubs catcher I would want to throw to, and that is Jason Varitek.

Hideo Nomo

Clay Buchholz

Jon Lester

Derek Lowe

All four of these pitchers have thrown no-hitters with Jason Varitek as the catcher. No other catcher in history can say that. Not to mention Curt Schilling had a 1 hitter with Varitek behind the plate. In other words....if I was a pitcher, I would definately want to throw to Vartiek. Vartiek will be a very good manager when his playing days are over.

Did you miss the part where I said I can understand it. I know why they did it. A majority of watchers would rather see a no-hitter get finished then a Cubs-Houston game but that still doesn't mean I get be pissed about it.

ESPN would have broken away from a Yankee-Red Sox game for a potential Cubs no-hitter. So out of around 1 of every 5,000 starts someone throws a no-hitter. I would think that it a much bigger deal than you are letting on to.

I don't think I could rob a pitcher of a once-in-a-lifetime experience over 20 or 30 pitches. I'd rather be more cautious with him later, get him out of a game or two early sometime down the road.

I liked what Boston did there. In any other circumstance, he is out of the game. It appeared to me that the only way he stayed in that game was if he didn't give up a hit. It's a tough decision for a manager to make, but it's the right one, IMO.

And I'm sorry, but color me a whacko for preferring that they switch coverage to a game with some meaningful history.

If I recall correctly, the Cub game had the same score before and after the Boston no hitter coverage started.
