Besides having the best record in the AL, they have locked most of their young players. Next up should be Crawford.

=D>

The Rays are without a doubt, the most talented (not saying they are the best team, but based on pure talent) team in the AL East. It wouldn't surprise me, if they make the playoffs---at the expense of the Yanks and/or the Red Sox  :beg: ---within the next yr or so.

God I hope so.

Looks like they will be fielding a winner come time to open that new stadium. Great job by the front office again on this one.

Next up probably is BJ Upton. Crawford has team options through 2010. He signed a similar long term deal to Shields and Kazmir before he was arbitration eligible and the Rays have to know that the next one is going to cost them a lot since he would be giving up his free agent status in 2011 and beyond. They still have a very tight payroll and depending on how some other young guys develop I could see them trading him within the next couple years for high level prospects like the Marlins did with Miggy.

With his injury problems, isn't this kind of a gamble?

I think so. But he could still be traded, I'd guess, unless he got a no-trade clause. I'd look to trade him if I could get a young 1B, C or SS (if Brignac doesn't pan out).

When a young guy with some arby years left (he does have some, correct?) do they really get a no trade along with it?

They won't matter since he would be giving up his right to arbi to sign the extension. I could see it. Sort of as a good faith in the since that he is doing them a favor to sign now, and he may want to stick around being they are on the cusp of being very good and a new park.

Particularly given the kinds of injuries he's dealt with. Still, these kind of deals make sense for the smaller market teams. No risk, no reward - they certainly aren't going to get these kinds of guys on the FA market.

Who was the Mets GM that made that awful trade? Mets fans have to be looking at the Kazmir - V Zambrano trade like we look at the Brock trade or the Phillies look at the Sandberg trade.

Imagine if they had kept Josh Hamilton and traded him for Volquez instead...my goodness...

Jim Duquette, though the trade was supposedly influenced pretty strongly by team owner Fred Wilpon and pitching coach Rick Peterson.("I can fix Zambrano in 10 minutes.")

So he felt like he should top the Phillips/Mo Vaughn deal? I wonder if the Santana deal will haunt them as well and how well is Milledge doing at Washington?.

Milledge is doing terribly to my disappointment.(due to my fantasy team and the way he was treated by NY media mainly for having the audacity to be black)
