The Cubs try to take the series from the Cardinals as two pitchers return to oppose their former teams. The Cubs haven't seen much of Wellemeyer, so hopefully they use a good approach and knock him around like they did Lohse.

Sunday night game, so let's show the nation that it's the Cubs division to take! A win puts them back in first place.

Cubs and Cards send each others old garbage against each other. At least we have Gallagher if things get ugly early.

I hope we can end the close loss, close loss, big win, close loss, close loss big win, close loss, close loss pattern to an end.

I just hope Marquis reeks to a lesser extent than Wellemeyer.....and I hope it's not close late since Lou wisely chose to use up Marmol w/ a 6 run lead today...

looking at those stats, Im going to say maybe Marquis deserves a night off.

When Cesar Ituris has a .412 ave and an OPS over 1.000, you shouldnt be a starting pitcher in the major leagues.

Tom Glavine, Bronson Arroyo, and Dontrelle Willis thank you for throwing them out of the league :D

Seriously though, it is a problem. Marquis can maintain being a league average pitcher and stay ok, but he's certainly not earning himself any points with Piniella. I don't think he's on thin ice as long as he remains that way (unless he starts losing his control or having really short outings), but knowing Piniella, he could slide there pretty quickly.

So far, he's done exactly what they signed him to do though. Put up league average production, and take the ball every time out. You just always have the feeling with Marquis though that the cliff is one or two starts away, even though he hasn't fallen so far. I think that's why he's so frustrating. You just never know what to expect out of him from game to game or even inning to inning.

He was above average for 2 months last year and was below average for 3 months. Average for 1 month.

Frankly, I think Marquis' outrageous contract is what's saving him from getting DFA'd.

I never understood this. If someone is that bad and you don't want to get rid of his contract at least bench or something. There is no reason you have to TROT him out there and let him hurt the team.

Not that I think Marquis should be DFA'd or benched, but its something I see all the time. Like Zito for instance. He shouldn't be on any major league roster. He should just retire and save everyone a lot of embarrassment.

Probably, but the "outrageous" label is more about what we expect him to do in the future, rather than what he has done to date. For his actual production so far, his contract is at or below expected market value.

Don't get me wrong...if I could trade him right now only paying a million or two of his contract, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I fully expect one of 08 or 09 will be a terrible year, although I haven't figured out which one yet. At least so far though, he's done the job.

I thought he was only signed through 08?

Unfortunately, no. If that were the case, the contract wouldn't look bad at all right now.

Dempster's the one in the starting rotation only signed through the end of the year.

Haha nope I wish. He signed a 3 year 27 milion deal last year. We got him for next year too :banghead:

Welly started off the season well going 25 innings in his first 4 starts, with 26 Ks and a 27/21 GB/FB ratio. Last 2 starts, he's thrown matching 4 run, 7 hit, 6 inning outings, and his GB/FB ratio has been a dismal 8/22. If he allows the Cubs to hit the ball in the air that often, his outing won't be that good. Obviously, Marquis needs keep the ball on the ground too.

Welly got off to a rough start in his last outing but settled down after about the 4th. If that happens again, the Cubs should have enough quality ABs to knock him around.

I always thought Wellemeyer's best out pitch was his change-up and in his last start, he was more of a two-seam/slider pitcher with hardly any off-speed stuff and had no command early on. I'm hoping he's overly amped about this start being against his former team and the only game on and struggles with the strike zone.

It's honestly gonna be tough to root against Wellemeyer. Part of me hopes he gives up 3 thru 6, and the Cubs tack on a bunch on the pen and win going away.

I always liked Todd as well and thought he never fully got his chance to show what he could do in a Cubs uniform.
