ZOMG BREAKING NEWS (KINDA NOT REALLY)

So get this....

I'm at a restaurant tonight with my family and the manager dude comes over to do his "how's the food" thing. He sees me wearing my Cubs hat and he says "yeah, this is their year."

He THEN says, "I just found out that my fiancee is related to Mark Cuban. Her grandfather is now a high ranking person in the Cubs organization SINCE CUBAN JUST BOUGHT THE TEAM."

Okay, okay, okay....so is this huge breaking news that he wasn't supposed to tell anyone, or is he completely full of crap and was pulling my leg, or did he misunderstand his fiancee or what?

Short of trading for A-Rod, is there enough talent available in an offseason for that sort of jump?

Apparently you haven't seen next offseason's free agent list. It's starting pitcher city.

The Cubs have all five of their current rotation signed through 2009 plus some guys in AAA that have a shot to be considered. I seriously doubt the Cubs pick up any more starting pitching.

That disappoints me severely. Zambrano is great and eventually the space aliens will return Hill, but the rest are thoroughly upgradable.

Dempster is a free agent after the year.

So we could add around $60M? Or find someone to take on something of Marquis & Lilly, with Howry & Eyre coming off the books...

Furcal - $12M/yr

Teix - $16M/yr (or Vlad) ($28M total)

Burnett - $12M/yr ($48M)

Sabathia - $16M/yr ($64M)

KRod - $14M/yr ($78M)

--------------------------

SS - Furcal

CF - Fukudome

1B - Lee

RF - Teixeira

3B - Ramirez

LF - Soriano

C - Soto

2B - DeRosa

SP - Zambrano

SP - Sabathia

SP - Burnett

SP - Hill

SP - Gallagher

Setup - Marmol

Setup - Wood

Closer - KRod

Yeah, that would work.

Ironically, the Cubs' chances are now getting worse than we thought.

Why?

Because if the rumors start flying that he'll up payroll to $175M in one year, it's going to make it likely additional owners would vote against him.

True. I would hope nobody would pick up and run with some complete speculation on a Saturday talk radio show, but I guess I've seen far stranger things (understatement).

Teix has played like 15-20 games at RF in his career and hasn't in like 4 years.

Who cares about defense in that scenario. That puts the Tigers lineup to shame.

While I'm all about the "fielding doesn't matter all that much" school of thought, I'm not in love with the idea of signing guys to huge contracts and putting them in positions they've never or barely played before.

Can anyone shed some light on the supposed Cuban/Reinsdorf imbroglio?

I know Reinsdorf voted against Cuban's purchase of the Mavs but is it totally a matter of Reinsdorf not wanting "meddlesome kids" screwing up his good ol' boy network?

I know this probably won't be a popular opinion around here but I never had a problem with Reinsdorf until the Cuban issue came up. I at least had a little bit of respect with how he dealt with Michael and Phil on non-Krause related issues.

And if Cuban offers a significant premium over the other potential buyers he should get the team. If they block him he should sue, sue, sue.

So in your scenario, replace Teix with Vlad the Impaler.

Isn't Sam Zell and Reinsdorf good friends? I'd think he'd have some kind of pull in convincing Reinsdorf...

Too old and not walky enough. How about signing Teix and trading DLee for Kemp and Young? :pig:

He can't sue over that, it's not an open auction. It's a private, non-regulated club, Zell can sell to whoever he wants.

And you should hate Reinsdorf for lots of reasons, #1 being the '94 strike. He definitely has an interest in keeping a charismatic owner taking over the Cubs and making them even more popular in this city than they already are. Reinsdorf is pure evil.

Zell is the kind of guy who want sell to Selig's guy Canning, just because Selig whispers "sweet nothing" is Sam's ear. Zell will definately take the best offer, period, I don't see how Canning will make anything Cuban offers.

I like the idea of a Cuban type owner that will put up the money and want to win but only as long as he doesn't interfere with GM decisions. If he turns out to be a Peter Angelos type owner it won't be pretty but if the GM says I want an ARod and he says you have the green light, cool.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall if Cuban's offer comes in the best, and Selig tries to tell Zell he can't take it.

Think those press conferences were profanity-laden? Oh, mama.

Zell doesn't own the Tribune or the Cubs.
