You know, it does occur to me that Cubs fans have not been particularly model fans lately. I can think of three incidents.

1) Throwing all those baseballs onto the field.

2) Throwing a beer at McLouth during a live play.

3) Those racist Fukudome t-shirts.

Yes, I know it's not every Cubs fan. Yes, I know there are always drunken idiots in every fanbase. But Brennaman has placed the Cubs fan under the microscope, and it's up to everybody to respond in a positive light. So far, that hasn't happened and, as unfair as it is, it reflects badly on everyone.

What he said has some truth it, it's not just Cubs fan. The way he said, made him sound bitter, and seems like he has a personal vendatta against the Cubs. He didn't say what he said, because it needing changing (it does tho), he said it because of a deep hatred of the Cubs. It's that simple. If he going to generalize Cubs fans, then every ballpark he vists, he has to generalize that teams fanbases. In other words...he's a drunken, bitter old mans, who prattles about non-sense.

I don't know I do think the Cubs need figure out somthing with all these idiots in the bleachers.

Oh, I agree. A lot of the behavior out there is embarrassing, and should be fixed.

But to say that is emblematic of most Cubs fan's behavior is ridiculous.

It's like saying that the behavior of stereotypical frat boys is proof that every student on the campus acts that way.

If something like this gets you heated up (as evident by this thread), you guys should never ever go anywhere near a European soccer stadium during a game.

........those Fukudome Tshirts are not meant to be racist.

Maybe so, but the guy was selling Cub merchandise without the organization permission, not to mention alot of fans found it offensive. I mean the vendor said it was his highest selling shirt, which means there are alot of people who didn't find it offensive. But there were prolly as many, or more people who found it offensive, thus they call the Cubs org, and the org decide to confront the vendor, and forced him to stop selling the shirt.

I don't found it offensive, a lack of taste, sure, but offensive no. Would I buy it? No.

If anyone thinks Cubs fans are the most obnoxious is baseball, they should visit the bleachers in NY (both teams) and Philly.

I would just ignore this guy. He's got an inferiority complex and his comments don't deserve our time or energy.

Aren't all Belgium soccer fans hooligans like Ajax and Feyenoord?

What a lot (not all) of you are missing is Marty is paid to be a professional announcer. What he did goes miles past being a professional. Do Cub fans have a lot of idiots? Oh yeah. Is it as much as opposing fans make it out to be? Not even close. People act stupid in all bleacher type sections in any ball park. Wrigley gets noticed more because quite honestly it's the best bleacher section in baseball.

As far as the tourist comments. Guess what 95% of those tourists who visit Wrigley are Cub fans. They live in Southern Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana. They watch on Comcast Chicago and WGN. Then there are others all over the nation who just watch on WGN. These people are fans. Just because they don't live in Chicago idiot people think you should be excluded from being a fan.

I haven't seen the shirt, but it sounds more like a really bad attempt at making money off being cute/funny than actual racism.

I don't see what the big deal is -- Hawk Harrelson makes the same kind of anti-Cub comments on a daily basis. And in games that don't even involve the Cubs. Face it ... the Cubs and their fans have haters - always have and always will. We'd probably feel the same way if we weren't raised Cubs fans.

Also, I don't get what upset Brennaman in the first place. They were baseballs -- not beer cups, not batteries or assorted trash. I'm probably reading too much into it but I took the gesture as the bleacher bums giving grudging props to Dunn the Cub Killer. You didn't see a dozen balls come back after Griffey or Votto went yard.

Lou's response to ole Marty:

Cubs manager Lou Piniella shrugged off Brennaman's comments. "He is a Cincinnati guy," Piniella said. "He's rooting for the Reds. I don't think our fans are obnixious. The fans get into the ballgame, and they enjoy coming to the baseball game, and that is why they draw the way they do here."

Hawk really doesn't rip into Cub fans. That is the difference.

I heard there was one that had Harry Carey with slanted eyes.

That is the Horry Cow shirt. And it was offensive, at least to me. It was basically the equivalent to having a big-lipped, Bright white eyed, watermelon eating Sambo on, say, a Derrek Lee shirt. I was amazed that people actually bought it.

OK. But do you think the intention of the person who created them was to disparage the race, or was it just a really stupid, bad attempt at humor without thinking of the consequences? Like I said, I didn't even see the shirt or the vendors selling them. I'll be glad if they never see the light of day again.

I don't think the intention really matters. The intention of the people who sold Aunt Jemima was to sell as much syrup as possible-it didn't mean their product projected a negative image of African Americans and perpetuated a stereotype which, coupled with other events, shaped the image of all African Americans for 100 years after the Civil War.

Warner Brothers produced a number of Bugs Bunny cartoons up until the 1970s that put Bugs into situations with black savages who only ate people and watermelons. Now, of course, the intention of Warner brothers was to be funny. The impact, however, is what matters more. And regardless of the guy's intention (which, I'm sure, was innocuous), the imagery associated with what he put on the shirt was dangerous.

Posted
Actually, the intention of Warner Brothers was pretty much to be racist. Not saying anything about the Fukudome shirts, but Warner Brothers knew exactly what they were doing.

The intention doesn't have to be malicious for it still to be stupidly racist.

Yeah, it kind of does. That's what racist means.

It was stupidly racially insensitive, but not racist.

Apparently there was some profanity used by Rox fans while heckling him during a recent series.

Maybe Bonds was right -- they should empty out the ballparks.

I know I'm playing semantics, but it isn't racist. It's stereotypical and insensitive, but it doesn't espouse the idea that races have different abilities and some races are more valuable than others.

I see your point, but if the only way to defend something is by saying "it's not technically racist," it's not a battle worth fighting. The shirt sucks. To get into a semantical argument over whether or not it's racist isn't really the point.
