Manager Dusty Baker and general manager Wayne Krivsky informed one of the top-ranked prospects in all of baseball was told that he was one of five roster cuts. Bruce will begin the regular season at Triple-A Louisville.

Bruce, 20, who was named the No. 1 prospect in 2008 by Baseball America, was seeking to become the Reds' starting center fielder in a spring battle that started with Ryan Freel and Norris Hopper.

Dusty already showing his love for scrappy vets.

You people are too funny.

Bruce came into spring training having to win a job. He proceed to post a sub 600 OPS. He'll go to AAA, get some more seaso ning, and be up by years end.

No big deal.

What more does Bruce have to accomplish in the minor leagues (hell, all of last year, for that matter, having torn his way through each level from A+ on up to AAA at ages 19-20) to earn a big league job? He has little to nothing to prove at the minor league level.

On top of that, it's absolutely stupid to hold competitions for starting jobs in spring training for a million reasons. Teams do it. Doesn't mean it's not stupid.

He shouldn't have had to earn the job in ST. Get ready for him to get banished to the bench/AAA every time he goes 2 games without a hit.

You should really listen to this, reds44. Because you know us. We're the type to say I toldja so. And we will be.

He's had 253 AB's above high a ball in his career. Last year he had 135 Ks compared to to 47 walks, so yes he needs to prove he can have a better eye at the dish. He's 20 years old. You can't honestly believe some more time in AAA wouldn't do him some good. It's really not a big deal at all.

Okay that's fine. What either of us say has nothing to do with what actually will happen. I know Dusty's past. I lived in the Chicagoland area when he managed the Cubs. I have no need to listen to what you say, when I already know what happend.

I think most of the Cubs fans will agree that Bruce could stand to use about another month or so in AAA. What we find hilarious is that Bruce is likely to always be on the outside looking in, in Cincinnati, simply because if you haven't played for Dusty before, or don't come out hitting like Albert Pujols you instantly go into Dusty's doghouse (unless of course, you save HIS son from being run over). So whenever Jay Bruce get's his shot, he better take advantage of it, cause if he doesn't, he won't get a fair chance under DUSTY.

And if you think that I have no problem with it. We will see what happens, and you may very well end up being right. However to think there is something out of place or "Dusty being Dusty" because Bruce is going to AAA is comical.

This will be even funnier in 2-3 years after Baker gets fired from Cincinnati and hired by some other team, when the fans from that new team try to tell Reds fans that "Baker didn't really have any young talent when he came in to Cincinnati, so he had to play the veterans. It'll be different this time. That Bruce kid? He was never that good anyway."

If they wait til mid-May or so it'll save them about $10m in the long run. Why are we laughing so much about this? When Longoria gets sent down that's just Maddon being Maddon too?

No, that will just be the Rays being the Rays (cheap as usual and making a financial decision over a baseball decision). It really is a very similar situation. History says Dusty will send down young players so he can start vets. And in this case he did it again. History says the Rays will send down young players that are good enough to make the team so they can delay starting their arbritration / FA clock and save money long term. And in this case they are going to do it again. Fans of neither team should be surprised by the decisions because it is consistent with the track record of Dusty and the Rays.

There's a distinct difference between cheapness and being financially responsible. A team like the Rays can't be throwing away that much money, unless doing so greatly increases their chances for the playoffs this year, but that remains a longshot.

You know, don't take the word of Cubs fans, as we are naturally pessimistic. If you need more testimonial about Johnny B. Dusty Baker, go ask Giants fans what they think of the man. I mean, Bruce does need some time in the minors, but to believe he will get a shot once he starts hitting well in AAA, is comical. Dusty Baker loves his veterans, hence the reason why Paul Bako, Corey Patterson, and Jerry Hairston, Jr were brought in.

Look, I'm hoping Bruce is a stud for you guys, BUT, Baker never had a young player developed for him. Dusty ALWAYS needed established vets to make him look good. By the end of the yr, Dusty is going to make Reds fans impatient, and frustrated.

uhh, why? As a Cub fan, I wish the exact opposite.

I don't think Dusty deserves to be bashed over this one. He's 20 years old, the arby clock could be of a consideration, and he hasn't looked great in ST. Maybe he needs more ABs to get his timing down, or maybe he's pressing, and a more gradual approach would work. I don't know. Let's also keep in mind that while he may be the best prospect in baseball right now, that alone doesn't guarantee he'll have the type of numbers that ARod or Miggy had as 20-21 year olds. 20 year olds who can't benefit from a little extra time in the minors are extremely, extremely rare.

That said, I will say that I'm so confident that I'd be willing to bet money that Dusty will give us some fodder over Bruce over the next year or two. I'm sure we'll hear his worn out lines as to why Bruce isn't his starting CFer in August after putting up a 1.400 OPS in AAA. Afterall, isn't one of Dusty's mantras that you can't teach an old dog new tricks? If that's so, there's no reason to believe he'll manage the Reds prospects any different than he did ours.

Considering you can make a pretty good argument about Bruce being one of the three best hitters on the Reds, this was an absolutely stupid move. I can understand making this move if you don't think you've got much of a shot at making the playoffs and would instead like to delay a guy's clock, but considering the Reds are in a somewhat weak division and are going into the season with Ryan Freel/Norris Hopper/Corey Patterson at CF...that doesn't exactly strike me as an ideal move. Considering Bruce at his worst would likely put up comparable offensive numbers to those guys, I don't see how this is a smart move.

I never really thought the Reds have a realistic shot at winning the division. Their pitching isn't good enough, and I say that without considering that Dusty is at the helm...
