Add in the fact that he does not hold runners well, and I can easily see the leadoff guy who Kerry walked in the the top of the 9th stealing second base on him, and then the next thing you know someone doubles him in to tie the game.

Wood actually does a decent job of holding runners.

Nah not from what I remember. The way he throws across his body, his slower delivery motion and with his propensity to throw sliders in the dirt when he is not fully warmed up, I can see guys running on him. I'll have to check on those stats though and see what the steal ratio is on him.

Marmol has a lot more of that quick, whiplike Juan Cruz'ish snap delivery that would be harder to run on.

ahh yes, the all-important and oft-cited "steal ratio" for closers

There was only one steal attempted off of Wood last year, and the runner was caught stealing. There were nine attempts against Marmol and all nine were successful.

What are the percentages that Wood, Marmol, or Howry get the closers job? I need some Fantasy Baseball guidance. Wood is available, Marmol is not. I'd love to pick up Wood, but is he a sure thing for closer? And for an extended period of time or only for a short while? Everything about this topic seems so vague, unless I missed something earlier in the thread

I'd say that it looks pretty likely, with what Lou has said, that Wood will be the closer barring any unforeseen stuff coming up between now and opening day.

Name me a good closer who does hold runners well.

I seriously can't think of any. Guys like Flash Gordon, Rod Beck, Mariano Rivera, Smoltz, etc. haven't cared about baserunners because they're so focused on the batter. If you can get the batter out in the ninth, it's not that important if the runner swipes second. Letting your attention get diverted, though, can cause the runner to be safe and allow the hitter to get on.

I'm in the Wood for closer camp by the way. His biggest weaknesses (injury issues, control problems) are hidden better in the closer role. Marmol and Howry's strengths are then highlighted by being firemen.

I'll go out on a pretty big limb and say it's a 100% chance Marmol, Wood or Howry gets the closer job.

Let's see, there are three candidates for the Cubs closer, which one do you choose?:

A. Has 65 career saves, 238 games finished.

B. Pitched in 65 games in 2007, 1-save and 6 games finished.

C. Pitched in 22 games in 2007, finished 2 and has 0 career saves.

Not even close.

Glad we didn't decide to let the guy who had all those career saves pitch the ninth inning today. He's been horrible.

i agree with what someone said in the game thread. once howry gets over his usual first month or month and a half of suckiness, i'll put our bullpen up against anyone else in the league. unless eyre starts pitching again, because he makes it worse.

That was me and it could be a nasty nasty BP when Howry works out of his problems. Hell if Eyre pitches like he did in the 2nd half last year, its even more deep. But our RH pitchers are flat out dominant in their roles.

So will all Kerry Wood-related discussion for the rest of the year be limited to this thread or will this be locked also?

No, but any thread that gets bumped for the sole purpose of saying, "I told you so!" and then more people piling on has a great chance of being locked.

The "Wood will be the greatest closer ever" thread was started Thursday had a number of posts Friday, Saturday and now today yet was locked by Banedon. For what reason? If it's because someone said "I told you so" or was being sarcastic, you're going to have approximately 127 locked threads in the next few months.

I didn't post anything in there, it just seems extremely odd.

Sham closer is doing pretty darn well. 3/3 in save attempts.

So how long until he's experienced enough as a closer to be our closer?

3 threads were bumped with the sole purpose of rubbing in the fact that Wood has done well. It was unnecessary. This one had been around the longest, and had recent posts, so it seemed like it was a good one to keep around. In any case, there isn't anything that would have been posted in there that can't be posted in here. The topics are quite similar. If there's 127 Wood threads bumped for this reason, than 127 locks it will be.

But those who wanted to rip his chances without any legitimate basis for it WAS necessary? So in essence you can say anything you want about any player you want, and aren't held accountable for what you say? OF course people are going to feel vindicated when he does well, and it's human nature to want to express that vindication. I told you so is alot better, IMHO, than some of the personal sniping that goes back and forth.

What happens if in 3 months Wood goes on the DL? Does the vindication title change hands?

It works the other way as well. Bud House couldn't wait to start a thread about Kerry's "bad back." Then he posted, what he thought was corroborating evidence, an article from the AP about Wood's rocky first appearance. The sad part is that he, and others, are Cubs fans yet a part of him is hoping that Wood gets injured (even though it would be to the overall detriment of the team) so he can start posting "I told you so..." One would hope that those threads would be locked as well.

And this is why I left a thread open to express any vindication people might feel. It doesn't take 3 threads to do so.

I'm not sure why this is an issue. I'm not preventing anyone from gloating....I'm just saying do it in one spot.

Again, that was in one thread...not three. I'm not telling anyone they can't say something. This isn't censorship. This is directing traffic.

Fair enough.
