I'm not sure what use we have for someone like Brandon Inge. He's terrible.

If he plays CF decently, he's a pretty good platoon option. .828 OPS against LHP the last 3 years (including a .924 last year). He's not a good option for a starter ever, but he'd fit in pretty well with this squad.

And I'm much rather deal from the Cubs strength (relief pitching) to get that right-handed platoon partner than deal any of the other trade chips.

I can't see the Cubs taking Inge's contract on to be a platoon player. Inge has made it clear he wants to start and thats why he wants out of Detroit and that he doesn't want to catch.

Thanks for the info. I didn't see his contract and his playing time demands. That makes me want to pass no matter what.

I don't see how the Cubs and the Tigers are a match in this particular deal. Now if a team that has a RH CF option becomes a part of the deal, say Florida....I think something might work out. Maybe something like:

Dempster to Detroit

Cody Ross to Chicago

Inge/cash to Florida

IDK, something like that could make some sense. At least it would keep the Cubs from having to acquire a guy like Payton.

Would you guys trade Marmol for Renteria?

Make them throw in a prospect say...a Scott Sizemore, or a Matt Joyce, then I would. But trading a young, cheap valueable arm for a free agent to be EXPENSIVE SS is NOT an ideal trade, IMO. So again, if Detroit is willing to throw in a solid prospect with Renteria, then yeah I would Marmol for Renteria/prospect.

But the first goal, should be to trade Dempster before considering moving Marmol.

Marmol is a reliever.

Renteria fills a massive gaping hole.

It's a no-brainer.

Renteria would fill a hole but I would have a hard time forgiving him for what he pulled last year.

I'd get over it in three seconds.

Renteria making $9 mill in 2008, with a $11 mill club option for 2009

Marmol making well prolly less then $400k.

You're right, it's a no brainer. No deal. I much rather rather wait for a player like Khalil Greene, or even move Marmol for Greene, then Marmol for Renteria.

who cares? there's no salary cap, so it's a non-issue

Look, neither trade is going to happen.

Hypothetically, though, the cost between the two is moot. A guy like Renteria is infinitely more valuable than a relief pitcher, even one as good as Marmol. A team like the Cubs can pay. Pay for what you need.

Let's shoot for the moon and demand Rick Porcello!

In all seriousness, it depends one whether you think Marmol has the potential to be a starter in the future. If he will be a reliever his whole career due to mechanics-related concerns, then Renteria for him straight-up would be robbery. It probably is, anyway, because regardless of his potential, Marmol will probably never get a chance to start for us anyway (and Detroit is exactly the type of team/front office that would give him a shot at it).

Yeah, he fills a hole. But to plug up that hole by trading possibly our best reliever? Who also makes $9 mil less? No dice, unless they throw in a decent prospect.

If Wood craps out and/or someone gets hurt, the pen becomes thinner without Marmol there.

There's no cap, but Hendry has a budget, so it IS an issue. He doesn't have a blank check.
