Plus the complete ridiculous signing of Gary Matthews, Jr, from last yr.

It's not about improving the baseball team over there, it's about outdoing what the team in the next county is doing, all to convince fans to switch allegiances.

The Dodgers threw 50m at a crappy centerfielder, so Anaheim threw 50m at 2 centerfielders. Not to be outdone, LA came back and threw even more money at a second centerfielder.

At this rate, the Dodgers and Angels will be playing CFers at every position on the field, all with 50m+ contracts.

Vince Scully: "Now catching and batting lead off for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Juan Pierre."

The Dodgers threw 50m at a crappy centerfielder,

The fact that Pierre is now playing left field is hilarious. I think that might be one of the 5 worst contracts of all time.

I thought it was glorious.

This deal is picking up steam with Lackey's injury.

Marshall, I'd assume?

Marquis, plz.

Marquis would get crushed in the AL, I can only assume.

no, they have a long guy that they will move to a starter. Think relievers.

It is fluid, but think Wuertz along with other minor leaguers

Angels would be getting a very underrated reliever in Wuertz. I still don't understand why Wuertz doesn't get any credit for being effective. He should have been listed as the closer candidates along with Wood, Marmol, and Howry.

Wuertz + for this guys doesn't seem very sensible.

It sounds to me as though Lou is infatuated with Hart, which potentially opens the door to trade Wuertz. It would certainly send the message to Baltimore if they went ahead and traded for a CFer now rather than wait any longer on Baltimore to step up to the plate.

"This guy" was #3 in rookie of the year voting last year.

Yeah, and in 89 Walton and Smith went 1/2. ROY and other voting is meaningless to me. We're talking about a guy who has done a decent job hitting for average and getting on base at an old age for every level, and he hits for no power. I don't see him making much of a career out of his skillset. Wuertz, as a middle reliever, may be of equal value, but I'd much rather include Wuertz in a deal for something meaningful, not another 4th outfielder. Coming from a GM who so grossly overvalues veteran relievers, I can't imagine how he can justify trading one of his best + prospects for this guy.

From what I see, he was 5th in voting.

He would be our starting CF, IMO.

Thats a scary thought.

Pie and Fuld fight it out for the CF job in spring training. Pie spanks Fuld around a bit, wins the job easily. So we trade for a slightly supercharged version of Fuld...

I could see the justification for using Willits as our CF against lefties. But he shouldn't be taking over against righties. And while I could probably stand the loss of Wuertz, tossing in more alongside him is grossly overpaying.

Posted
He could be a solid acquisition IMO if the price is right and, more importantly, the intended use is right. Let him play CF against lefties and be a 5th OF/defensive replacement against righties. Send Fuld back to AAA in case of injury/implosion, or shop him to a team that has a more productive use of Felix Pie-Light than we do. However, if we get him, he probably starts, and he and Theriot in the lineup could kill this team (thought the gritiness factor would be off the charts). More than Wuertz, unless they are eating Marquis salary is no bueno.
