Carl Pavano is in camp. He has to be because he’s on the 40-man roster. The Yankees asked him to accept a payoff on the final year of his deal then take a minor-league contract and he refused.

Pavano had surgery last June and almost certainly won’t be ready to pitch until 2009. He’ll be somebody else’s problem then.

To say Pavano is a pariah is an understatement. He asked one of the clubhouse kids for a small box today to store some things he had in his locker. The kid went over to a garbage pail, fished out an orange Nike shoebox, dumped a half-eated sandwich out of it and handed it to Pavano.

None the wiser, the “American Idle” (as the Post calls him), put it in his locker.

When the clubbies hand you garbage, that’s a sign your team has had enough of you.

Carl Pavano; Livin' the dream.

Yeah, I feel real sorry for the guy. Except for the whole multi-millionaire part.

Yea dont forget that part that he used to bang Alyssa Milano, after that no way am I feelin sorry for him.

why would pavano sign such a deal? to give him a hard time for it is ridiculous.

The Yankees were not trying to cost Pavano money, they simply wanted to clear his roster spot and wash their hands of this disaster.

Pavano's reason for not accepting this (according to his agent) was that accepting the minor league deal would affect his MLB service time and thereby cost him some of his pension! I find this laughable am thankful that Carla Pavana will be pitching elsewhere next season.

That's a legitimate claim. He is entitled to that pension fund. Did the Yankees offer to cover the difference?

Don't you always love it when a team you hate hands out a terrible contract and has to live with the consequences?

Yes, Because it means I have to listen to my new manager talk about what a competitor Kyle Farnsworthless is!

I will be glad when several of those bad contracts end this year. Then next year we lose two more, one bad, one meh.

It is a legitimate claim, and nothing the Yankees can do! I personally don't begrudge him one cent. It is actually better for the Yankees that he stay. Once ST ends, the Yankees will put him on the 60-day DL, thereby putting his 11M Salary on the insurance company.

However, I don't feel an ounce of pity for the man. I will continue to compare him to Ed Whitson until I die!

I never realized how bad that guy was / is.

He's had 3 years (his MLB career began in '98) with a record above .500. A 3-2 year, a 1-0 year, and his 18-8 year. I was thinking he did better than 18-8 that year.

Way to go spankees.

whats the difference roster wise between being on the 60 day dl and the minor league roster? both dont effect the 40 man roster right?

Why? It wasn't a terrible contract. They did not go overboard. In fact Pavano had similar contracts from at least 2 other teams. Yes, in hindsight it is terrible, however he was the best pitcher available in that FA year. If he was able to pitch and be a solid #4 his contract would be fine. The Yankees had teams interested in trade talks for Pavano last year, before the TJ surgery!

The difference is being on the 60-day DL opens a spot on the 40-man, but does not stop the player's MLB service time.

Taking the minor league assignment would take time away from his MLB service time, thereby affecting his pension.

yeah pavanos motivation has been covered. but the yanks get their 40man spot at the beginning of the season either way so why do they care?

How about not having him at ST? If he wasn't on the 40-man he wouldn't have to be there. Do I really want this guy having ANY interaction with the young pitchers?

dude, pavano had pitched in seven major league seasons and had a grand total of two years with an ERA+ above 100, and one at 100. So basically he was average or worse than average in 5 of his 7 seasons in the big leagues. he had a lot of injury problems before 2003 as well. this was a bad signing that was based on one very good year that he had. you don't give $40m over 4 years to a guy who has been below-average most of his career and is a significant injury risk. just because multiple teams go overboard and offer big contracts after one big year (see: adrian beltre) doesn't mean that it was an acceptable move. it just means that multiple teams were stupid.
