I don't mind Clark.

you don't mind him?

He's good, "minding him" shouldn't even be an option.

I like pretty much everything they've done so far this offseason. Clark and Olsen are both good receivers. I'm fine with Grossman, Orton and a draft pick (2nd, or preferrably, 3rd round or later) taking QB duties. I don't like the talk of possibly 4 QBs, unless the 3rd and 4th are both non Griese. Nothing against Brian, but if you are bringing back Orton and Rex, there's no value in Griese this year. I wish they'd get rid of Archuleta, although I'm still a little unsure about how his contract affects the cap.

Do the Bears see some QB that is going to be available in 2009 and are just waiting or do they actually think the same 3 QB's is a good idea?

Every indication says they will be cutting Griese soon, which would mean they don't see the same 3 as a good idea. It would also seem to be a near lock for them to draft a QB, and let him be 3rd.

They have stressed open competition at QB this year, with some reports even suggesting Orton has the upper hand, so it's definitely not status quo. As for 2009, they might have some names in mind, but I don't believe they are waiting for whomever that may be.

As for comments about this being a horrible offseason for the Bears, I think Chicago fans are conditioned to assume the worst with management. But the people in charge of the Bears are clearly not the normal incompetent management crew, regardless of what Rick Morrissey or Jay Marioti think. I still believe they can and will turn the ship back in the right direction this offseason and have this team contending for NFC superiority again in the near future.

I don't know if every indication is showing them cutting Griese. I think they will, but JA has come out and stated that he and the coaches have had discussions of carrying 4 quarterbacks on the 53 man roster next season.

4 QBs has been mentioned, but they haven't said anything about Griese being one of them. Every writer who follows the Bears has said Griese has pissed somebody off and is as good as gone. Angelo has said it's Orton vs Grossman for starting QB, and Orton has been extended. It would be a major upset if Griese returns.

Wouldn't suprise me if he wants out now. He probably thought the starting job would be his by now.

New England released Colvin. I wrote in windycityfootball that I thought he would be an interesting name, given he was a likely cap casualty, and provided he doesn't sign for big money.

If the Bears lose Briggs, and use most of their draft picks on offense, as well as sign a free agent offensive lineman, I wonder if they'd have any interest in bringing back Colvin to help with the transition to a younger linebacking corps. He's clearly not an everydown guy, and his injury may or may not affect his ability to do anything in 2008. But he could be of use in limited action for the Bears.

I'd be for it. He'd be great rushing the passer from a couple different areas. And he would allow the Bears to ease in Jamar Williams and threaten Hillenmeyer.

Cleveland is about to give Derek Anderson a 3 year deal for relatively cheap. This most likely means one of him or Brady Quinn will be gone at the end of next season as the deal will allow them to shop him around if they so choose or make him attractive to keep. Hopefully the Bears pursue my ultimate dream of having Brady Quinn in a Bears uniform at the end of next season.

Update on Berrian from the Sun Times.

Here's the bottom line for the Bears' attempt to re-sign wide receiver Bernard Berrian: Their most recent offer -- $8 million in bonus money in a five-year, $25 million package -- wasn't enough to get a deal done.

Berrian is aiming to top the six-year, $39 million deal former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch received from the Seattle Seahawks last fall. That contract pays Branch $23 million in the first three years.

1) the Bears offer was a pretty fair one

2) who in gods green planet is going to give him a Branch-like deal?

David Haugh is absolutely convinced the Bears must pay whatever it takes to keep Berrian. These beat writers must have an in with Bernard or something. What is the logic in feeling forced to keep your best receiver at all costs in order to maintain your offensive production when your best receiver has never put up good numbers and your offense has always been poor? Of all the sports, the NFL demands that smart teams do not overpay players, and it has been shown repeatedly that free agents are relatively easy to replace. There are very few irreplacable players in football - most of them are quarterbacks. Very few play receiver.

I generally agree with David Haugh...this is an instance where I don't.

He's been very good about emailing me back on the occasions that I've emailed him over an article.

that ain't happening, partner. berrian is not that good.

haha neither is branch!!! the nfl is funny with their contracts.

I hope you aren't implying that the NBA and MLB don't have ridiculous contracts for players that aren't that good?

Posted
Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. With a contract demand like that, I've got to wonder if Berrian just wants to leave the Bears because he doesn't really want to be here anymore.

Let BB walk. Javon Walker is about to be released, and there are several decent options at receiver that we can bring in, along with a drafted wideout, that will strengthen our receiving core compared to last season.

I think he's probably trying to make as much money as possible.

I think people are kidding themselves if you don't think he can get more than 5/25. That's less than Kevin Curtis got last year.

That being said, I probably wouldn't go too much higher than that.

I know, but we offered him that though. He's asking for basically $8m/yr ($23mil over the first 3 years). Since NFL contracts become very sketchy after the initial years, I think it's fair to say he's trying to get the latter. $8mil/yr is fairly outrageous for a #2, IMO.

If the Bears plan on going cheap in free agency.....here's a couple guys I'd like them to sign.

Jacob Bell- G, Titans. Just 27 and started 31 of the last 32 games for a pretty good OL.

DJ Hackett- WR, Seahawks. Probably not gonna be super cheap. Produced a ton when he played (32 for 364 in 6 games). But does have some injury issues that will hold back his big payday. Again just 27

Sean Locklear- OT, Seahawks. Played the right side, but could possibly move to the left. At worst, gives Tait 1 more year at LT while a drafted player (probably not a 1st rounder) gets a year to get ready.

Randy Starks-DT, Titans. Just 24. Played behind some great DTs in TN, and was very well coached, pretty sure he would be a great fit.
