It really sucks even more because Brown was hurt in the way he was. Didn't some douche from SD horse-collar him or something after a play was over (or something like that)?

Lorenzo Neal...

And Dvorcek hurt his knee on punt return duty. sigh

I don't think the "Mike Brown hurt" excuse is valid, not anymore. This team should have been "Mike Brown" proofed along time ago.

It's not just Brown. They lost people at every level of the defense. The loss to Dallas killed them physically and ruined the season.

SD- Lost Dusty D and Mike Brown... BTW the best rb in the nfl ran 17 times for 25 yards.

Dallas- Lost Vasher, Tommie Harris hurt is knee, and Rube Brown lost an arm and an ankle.

So then against Det- We blame grossman, play Griese who then throws 3 ints, and Kitna burns a secondary starting 3 new players, oh and btw... Kevin Payne breaks his arm...

I can continue.

the payne injury hurts because we don't know what we have with him. it woul;d have been nice to have seen what he can do instead of throwing archuleta out there.

In 2006 we had a dominant D.

We don't anymore

In 2006 we had a serviable oline

Now it is amoung the worst in the NFL

In 2006 we had a running game

Now it is amoung the worst in the NFL

That last point is a myth. They didn't have a running game in 2006. Sub 4 yards per attempt. Pathetic.

The D can be dominant. Contrary to Peter King's absurd opinion, they were devestated by injury in 2007. He wouldn't take much to vault them back up to dominant status. Likewise, while they currently don't have an offensive line, there's no reason why by September 2008 they can't have a decent one, and that is going to be the most important aspect affecting your third point.

The running game might not have been great in 2006, but it was still somewhat existent. Enough to make teams somewhat respect the PA pass. Also considering the fact that the Bears don't figure to be major players for any top FA lineman, and todays commment by Angelo in the paper that he prefers veteran olineman(basically indicating that if an Olineman is drafted high, he won't start), I think a capable Oline by next season is a pipe dream.

The running game sucked in 2006 and nobody respected it. Grossman was able to lead the offense through the air early, but then teams decided to concentrate on stopping the pass because they never had to worry about Jones, or Benson, killing them.

Don't forget Briggs, he was hurt vs Dallas, 2nd half I believe.

I don't think it sucked... but it isn't this bastion of supremacy like some of us would like to remember. That is why im conflicted now.. I want someone like turner or mendenhall but it wont make one bit of difference with this offensive line.

No conflict for me. I want the line first and foremost. I have felt that way for 3 years, back when everybody was so hung up on the GD TE position. Give me a line and the RB will follow.

JA likes to focus on the OL via free agency rather than the draft. I'm disappointed to see a lot of big names back with their former teams and Angelo say he's not focusing on the big names. There's a bigger risk with their bigger price tag but I don't know that I want to see another over-the-hill patchwork line. I'm not confident that Angelo will draft OL on day one.

Theres a rumor on the Bears board that the Vikings have signed Bernard Berrian and will announce it later today.

According to NBCSports.com, the personal jet of Vikings owner Zygi Wilf flew out to California to pick Berrian up and take him back to Minnesota.

I have a very bad feeling about BB going to the Vikings

Well you can relax then...

Free agent Bernard Berrian is reportedly en route to Oakland.

The Vikings couldn't get him signed immediately, not that they're entirely out of the running. Berrian is the deep threat big-armed JaMarcus Russell needs and Al Davis has tons of cap room, even after the Tommy Kelly signing.

Also, who called Johnson?

The Bears are working to set up a visit with free agent WR Bryant Johnson.

It'd be Johnson's first visit. He could be in Chicago by early next week. It's no surprise that the overrated wideout isn't being highly sought after.

Hopefully, we can get him on the cheap.

I don't know how Johnson is overrated, those 2 guys he has been playing behind, Boldin and Fitz..they are pretty good ya know.

Overrated, no, but in the times he's had a chance to see significantly playing time, he hasn't exactly shown he's a top receiver.

Yeah the WR position is pretty much a 100% horror show next year. They're going to suck. There's nothing there for us to grab on to, no way to improve the situation significantly enough to raise us out of the bottom 5 WR corps in the league. We might be the flat-out worst.

Eh, is Bradley/Johnson/Hester really that much worse than Berrian/Muhammad/Hester?

Hard to say. I'm more concerned about what the hell they plan on doing with the line at this point, as it looks like they're not going to get anything through free agency there.

exactly. they seem to be ok with picking up scraps at thispoint. like someone earlier wrote, this season is a rebuilding one.

I dont believe in rebuilding.
