Trib[/url]"]The Bears and quarterback Rex Grossman have agreed to terms Saturday on a one-year contract worth $3 million, including a signing bonus, half of which is guaranteed. Grossman can also earn just shy of $2 million more in performances incentives.

The deal has not been signed yet.

.........

Third quarterback Brian Griese's status is unclear at this point. A source close to Griese said Saturday that no decision has been made about his future.

I really thought Rex was gone, but I am glad he is back. If he is horrible you can always cut him or bury him at no. 3.

I would release Griese at this point. You have to make room for a prospect at QB like the kid from Delaware or the guy Harbaugh coached at U of San Diego.

Yeah, Griese is as good as gone right now, but I'm sure they'll wait until Rex's contact is official.

OT who have participated at the Combine. (Clady(24 reps), Baker and Cherilus didnt run)

Long-37 reps, 5.17

C. Williams-21 reps, 4.97

Otah-27 reps, 5.56. Dude drop the plow, thats Fred Miller slow.

He's still under contract, what kind of pick do you think we could get for him? A 5th rounder maybe?

I think they're going to cut him before his roster bonus kicks in on the first.

Houston couldn't get any type of pick for David Carr last year. I'd be very surprised if the Bears get anything for Griese especially at his contract.

Hmm... Clayton's article on it states that Rex has been signed as the starting QB. Not that that should take anybody by surprise, but it does conflict a bit with the reports we had been hearing that he would be signed (almost word for word) to compete for the job with Orton.

Doesn't matter to me much, as I'd rather see Grossman play than Orton anyway. While Grossman (despite his huge inconsistencies and clear flaws) has shown big flashes of his talent, I have never seen anything to get very excited about from Orton (except maybe that one drive in Detroit in 05 and the fact that he managed to out-manage Favre in the horrible conditions this year). Still, I was surprised, as it goes against what we've been hearing from the local outlets.

Rex Grossman has signed a one-year deal to remain as the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears.

Grossman wanted to stay with the Bears, and Bears general manager Jerry Angelo and coach Lovie Smith wanted to give him one more chance to stay as their starting quarterback. On Saturday, each side worked out a deal in order for the relationship to continue.

Could just be an issue of wording, though.

The interesting part of John Clayton's story about Rex Grossman's re-signing is the part about Grossman regaining his job as Chicago's starter. While this is a significant development, the Bears have proven they'll switch quarterbacks if Grossman isn't playing well. They benched him after three games and six interceptions last season. Grossman returned to the lineup in November, throwing one interception in four games before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Teams prefer to enter the regular season having committed to a starting quarterback. The position is important from a leadership standpoint. Committing to Grossman now gives Grossman a chance to reestablish his leadership. Clayton's story notes that several of the Bears' offensive players supported Grossman's return. Some players think a teammate shouldn't lose his starting job because of injury. Grossman now has one more opportunity to regain the form he showed more often than not during the Bears' Super Bowl run.

You're probably right. I'm being a little over-optimistic.

It's good to hear some guys on the O supporting Grossman. But it didn't look to me like the feeling was universal last year. It sure seemed like there were a lot of players heaping bad feelings on Rex even though it was clear the OLine had to share at least some of the blame.

I don't know, that whole dynamic really turned me off last year. I didn't think the blame was being shared, and to me it was clearly more than one person's fault last year.

For what its worth Pep Hamilton is running QB drills at the combine. Again, ill say how average these qb's look. I will be hopping mad if we take one earlier than the 3rd round. One Qb who looks good is Josh Johnson from San Diego. Who ran a 4.4 and has a cannon.

Big Josh Johnson fan. I think he could be a real good NFL QB. But he's a guy that would need to be developed a lot, and may not be even ready to play in 09. I don't trust the Bears to develop a QB so raw. He's like Tarvares Jackson, but with a better idea of how to run an offense.

He's the #2 QB on my wishlist for the Bears, behind Brian Brohm. I'm hoping the Bears use one of their third rounders on him.

If they draft Otah while Williams is available I will freak.

And as I mentioned earlier, I want the Johnson kid from SD. Harbaugh coached him before he took over for The Trees. Besides his obvious raw talent, he is reputed to be very heady.

Don't know if this was posted yet:

Bears signed TE Desmond Clark to a two-year extension through 2010.

Kyle Orton is also expected to be extended shortly. Clark, 31 in April, caught 44 passes for 545 yards (12.4 YPC) and four TDs in 2007. He'll eventually move into a backup role behind Greg Olsen, but the Bears value his blocking ability and leadership. Clark's 2008 fantasy potential will be impacted by how the depth chart shakes out, but he should only be TE2 material. Feb. 24 - 2:15 pm et

Better not effect Olson's playing time.

The speculation in the Trib earlier was that both Clark and Gould were due for new contracts. Clark especially because of his "mentoring" role with Olsen.

Mendenhall is going to be a stud, dag nabbit I wish the Bears didnt have such a need at Oline.

Oline problems shouldn't even be a factor IMO. If you have a chance to draft a stud like Mendallhall, you have to do it. The Bears have a lot of issues, but Rome wasn't build in a day, and they can't fix it all this offseason. Draft the best avialable players. That is how I would roll at least.
