Both Mendenhall and Stewart will be there at 14. The run on RBs won't come til at earliest 16-18 whenever Houston or Arizona picks. I'd pick Stewart over Mendenhall, but that's 100% based on the fact that I trust Pac10 RBs more than I do Big Ten's. Really a toss up between the two talent wise.

Mendenhall will be gone by the 2nd round guranteed.

He won't make it past Seattle and could go as early as Houston/Arizona, as I pointed out above.

Yea I was replying to minnesotacubsfan who said he would be a good pick for the Bears in the 2nd round. Mendenhall would be worth the 14th pick, but the Bears need to work on the OLine before they take a back. With last years line it wouldnt matter who the RB or Qb was.

As much as I love Mendenhall, the Bears have no business drafting a RB with their first round pick.

I think it'd be justified under a few circumstances. It essentially boils down to whether the Bears think Cedric Benson is good enough to be the primary RB in this system. Honestly, I think he is good when he has an effective complement (see: Thomas Jones). I don't think Garrett Wolfe has the potential to be more than a special teams guy due to his size, so I'm a fan of someone like Chris Johnson or Steve Slaton to fill that role. 3rd down backs can usually be found in the 4th/5th round.

On the other hand, if the Bears are ready to give up on Benson or think he needs a kick to the rear, someone like Mendenhall or Stewart would be a good pick. The running game last season was abysmal, whether you think it was Benson's fault, the OL's fault, Turner's fault, or some combination of the above. An upgrade at RB might do this team a lot of good.

Honestly, my semi-realistic wish list at 14 looks something like this...

1) Ryan Clady

2) Brian Brohm

3) Jeff Otah

4) Kenny Philips

5) Rashard Mendenhall

6) Jonathan Stewart

I need to brush up on my scouting reports for guys like Chris Williams and Gosder Cherilus. I've heard differing reports on where they're likely to end up at the next level. If either or both has the goods to be a LT, that'll move them up around Jeff Otah's level. If RT is in their future, they'll be below Stewart.

Agreed.

But I'll be more specifically, the Bears have no business drafting a BIG 10 RB at all.

Williams could be a LT, but Clady and Otah (along with Jake Long) have the potential to be all pros. Cherilus, I've heard is strictly a RT. If Phillips is there at 14, I'd gamble that Williams or Nicks is there. Another guy I like is Tony Hills, who may last til the 3rd.

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reported that the Bears are unlikely to use the franchise tag on Berrian. Rosenhaus said Friday he has ``not heard anything either way.’’

well, I agree with you that he will go late in the 1st, but I still wouldnt take him until the 2nd. I dont think he is worth a#14 pick, with our other needs.

The more I think about it, it may not be a bad move to franchise Berrian. Sure, he'd be overpaid, but only for 1 season. He'd be a tough sign for whoever the year after, assuming he doesn't want to take a massive paycut.

i think you guys put way too much weight on draft position. how is, say, Brohm a different play at pick 18 than he is at pick 14? you draft for need, period

he differs in the expected salary he would command, but your point is still true, I think.

he'd have to. they'd be paying him about $8m this year, which is absurd for a guy who is a pretty average #2 receiver. i think berrian would have enough sense to know that nobody is going to give him $8m on the free market, especially when the offers that come rolling in are about half that amount (annually)

Depends on who is there at 18 compared to who would be in there at 14 obviously. All it takes is one person who you have ahead of Brohm that is taken between 15-17 that would make that difference.

Raw, if you're on the board at 14, I'd draft you as well.

I'd rather take Malcolm Kelly.

I'd draft Jackson ahead of Kelly.

Why? I really don't know that his slight build will handle the rigors of the NFL and as someone else said, he loses some of his value on the Bears since Hester is a better returner.

He's more explosive and athletic than anyone in the draft, Kelly is more of as possession WR and Jackson is the HR threat. The Bears need someone who can create in open space.

Devin Hester is good after the catch, assuming he can catch the ball. Bradley is good after the catch, assuming he can get on the field. I'd say the Bears need a possession WR. Hester, Bradley, and if you bring him back Berrian are all HR threats. The Bears need somebody to give them what Moose was supposed to.
