General Manager Kevin Towers said the Padres have had recent communications with the Cubs and Pirates, respectively, regarding right-handed-hitting corner outfielders Matt Murton and Xavier Nady.

Murton, 26, hit .281 with eight homers and 22 RBI with the Cubs last year and batted .297 with 13 homers and 62 RBI in 144 games with the Cubs in 2006. Talks with the Cubs regarding Murton began after the Cubs outbid the Padres for Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome.

Nady, who started his career with the Padres, is a .272 career hitter with 62 homers and 226 RBI in 524 games.

“With Fukudome in Chicago, Murton might be available,” Towers said. “We've exchanged a few more e-mails with the Pirates on Nady, but I don't know if we match up very well for a trade.”

Sounds like they are more interested in Murton than Nady

If we give them Murton, I hope it's part of a bigger deal that nets us Greene.

What would be the point of trading him? I'd rather just keep him then...

You'd rather just keep him than trade him in a package for Greene?

Sorry...I meant to say if we didn't get Greene, I'd rather we just keep Murton then.

Ah, gotcha. Makes sense now.

Too many cold ones at the corner pub last night. Whew!

Somehow, I don't think we'll get Greene in a deal that involves Murton. First, I don't think SD values Murton enough to do that deal, and secondly I don't think Jim is looking for an upgrade at SS. (Yes, we can debate whether he should, I just don't think he is or will.)

One name that I find intriguing is Tim Stauffer. Now, I'll admit that he hasn't done much in recent years. His two starts for the Padres last season were disaterous and his ERA for Portland in the PCL is meh to downright atrocious. I do know that at one time, he was highly regarded.

Getting Stauffer would add another arm to our mix. Now I'm sure the case can be made that keeping Murton is more desireable than getting a player like Stauffer. On the other hand, it appears that Murton is going one way or the other, and a player like Stauffer would be better than some of the other roster filler we could end up with.

Forgive me, but I thought general managers were precluded from talking about players on other teams in public. If a GM does speak of another team's player(s), he is violating the tampering rules of baseball. Kevin Towers is a smart GM, so I'm guessing whoever got this information about his interest in Nady or Murton violated some kind of agreement because Towers probably gave the reporter this information "on background only" or "not for attribution." Therefore, I doubt this source learns anything anytime soon from Towers.

I don't think that this is true. I think it only applies to free agents to-be during the exclusive signing period. I can't see anyway that expressing interest in a ballplayer is tampering. I do think that it is not very smart.

Drew Macias might be a player we could get for Murton as well. On the other hand, I don't see much different between Macias and Fuld.

I don't think Jim will trade Murton to SD until he's sure he won't need to package him to get another player he wants.

On the other hand, with the Cubs interest in Byrd, I wonder if the Rangers would do some variation of this deal...

Cubs get Byrd

Padres get Murton

Rangers get Stauffer

Interesting that the GM is quoted there actually expressing interest in another team's player. That's not too common.

I was just about to post this thought. It's tampering. This is now, at least, the second time this offseason that Towers has openly mentioned by name specific players from another team. He's not suppose to do that...

Stauffer's incredibly damaged goods at this point. I don't want any part of him.

The two names in their system who seem attainable and are of interest to me are Wade LeBlanc and Will Inman. Both ended their seasons at AA and appear to have decent ceilings as middle of the rotation types down the road. I also really like Matt Antonelli, but his position (2B) and his stats suggest a few problems to me in terms of the Cubs' ability to attain him and where he'd fit in down the road, considering the glut of MIFs on this team.

Explain how it is tampering?

It's tampering because the rule prohibits team officials from openly coveting another team's players.

Here's an old quote from the commissioner. Tampering rules are private, so it's hard to figure out what exactly is over the line.

Selig said he doesn't want team officials talking about another team's players, but what Steinbrenner did wasn't considered tampering.

Many people feel that Hank Steinbrenner has been tampering in the Santana trade talks for doing many of the same types of quotes that Towers is doing, and the Twins are not happy about it. Here's a blog from a writer from the Minnesota StarTribune on that:
