This scares me. I certainly hope Hendry is doing all he can to move Marquis and Dempster. Barring a trade, who do you guys think is the best in-house candidate to take one of those starting jobs? My vote would be Kevin Hart...

Hart would be a good choice, since Ascanio may be MLB-ready in the bullpen and they may wish to carry Lahey back there, too.

Don't forget about Marshall.

I really don't understand moving Dempster back to the rotation. We tried that once and it failed miserably - and for that matter he wasn't that bad of a closer. He blew THREE saves last year - Three. Big whoop.

I can live with Marquis as a 5th starter, but not as a #4 with Dempster as #5.

Dempster was above average as a closer, but horid as a starter and set up man.

Cubs would be idiots to move him to the rotation in his final season, when he could easily fetch a Type A or B as a closer and get us draft picks. Letting him and Howry (or Wood if someone offers him an insane contract) go would be awesome for our farm as we could pile up some great picks and replace them with cheap in house guys who have the potential to be just as good.

Oh, and Sean Gallagher's name should be in there, unless we are assuming he won't be on the team.

I still think one of those guys (Marquis or Dempster) will be dealt in Spring Training provided the rest of the rotation is healthy. I think there will be a team out there, who will suddenly need a starter for whatever reason, and will be able to accept a ~$5M salary. In Marquis' case, I think Hendry will need to send some cash to offset part of his $9M due in 2009.

Marquis, Dempster, Hart, Marshall, Gallagher, Guzman, etc is nice depth, but I prefer solidity for at least the #4 spot. I would like to think Hendry has someone in mind, but it's Hendry so who knows.

isnt gooz out for '08?

As long as Lou has learned not to put him in non-save situations, he should be fine in the pen.

Did that Marshall dude suddenly drop off the face of the Earth? I know he's not the number one candidate but he does still hold a chance, no?

The Cubs started Trachsel over Marshall at the end of last year. For some reason, they don't seem to have confidence in him.

It may be because they thought he had a dead arm though. Of course, if they feel he is injury prone that won't help his case whatsoever as Lou seems to value starters that have the potential to throw a high number of innings, but it does give him a shot to at least hold the job for a while next year.

dear god, dempster go bye bye please. go home to the rockies

The Rockies already have two closers. I'd like to see him go to Texas with a prospect for Teagarden.

I'd also love to see Marquis go to NY for Heilman.

Demp in the rotation? Didn't Cubs already try this in 2005? IT DIDNT WORK OUT. And then they moved him to the closer spot. Worked out fine.

Hopefully he throws enough meatballs in ST to convince Lou he's not good enough to be a starter... That our he gets injured.

I'm not in as big a hurry to dump Dempster or Marquis for nothing and salary eaten. It seems like a Jacque Jones type of situation, where we actually paid some money and sent him away for nothing while guys like Jose Guillen are making big money. Can Dempster and Marquis really be worth nothing in a market where crap like Kyle Lohse could pull down 4/44? I don't think so. I'm not saying they're worth a gold mine but I'd expect to be able to get something like Ruben Gotay and no cash thrown in for Marquis.

I thinK Gallagher should be at the head of the pack for a starting job. He's put up outstanding minor league numbers, give him a real, legitimate chance.

I like our catcher depth as it stands with Soto, Castillo, and Donaldson, I don't think Texas would give up Teagarden and his strikeout numbers remind me of Kelly Shoppach.

Maybe one day he can get his first major league win

Is anyone out there a fan of Dempster moving to the rotation. I have not met a single fan who thinks it's a good idea.

I am a big fan of this idea if it was for the St. Louis Cardinals that is
