This is what happens when everyone knows you're not going to offer him a contract, even though he's under your control and will lose an arbitration hearing.

Seems like the type of thing a classy guy like Mark would do.

what?

Look at the way Kerry handled himself while rehabbing - and once he was healthy again. IMO - Mark's a jerk.

I'm not sure what Prior has done to suggest he's not classy. Is he personable? No, not really. Is he even a nice guy? Doesn't seem like it. However, that comment was pretty much baseless.

Honestly, I don't mind seeing him on any other Central team besides the Cardinals. Obviously, I want the Cubs to win if he's pitching against him, but him pitching for the Astros doesn't "mean" anything to me because they're such a non-entity of a team...I view them as a rival in technicality only, and in any kind of emotional attachment.

And remember, this is just saying the Astros offered him adeal. That doesn't mean at all that it's a deal he wants or he's even thinking about going to the Astros.

good, someone else gets to pay him to throw a towel. Even when he does pitches, he is a batting practice pitcher. Why you guys are getting worked up about this guy is a joke. Get worked up about our lack of a leadoff hitter, closer & overall lineup of strikeout kings.

ERA+ of 172? Christ, that's just frigging amazing. The Cubs would already have won a World Series since 2003 if Prior was durable. No doubt about it.

2003 was loooong ago. Let's face it, he is coming off a serious shoulder surgery, who is to say he will even be close to what he was in 2003?

I'm just saying. Potential is why we care so much about him

why would he feel any obligation not to go to the team he feels he fits best? why is it classless to go elsewhere in the division?

The Astros are a team that could take a risk on him. They have a hole the size of Jason Whitlock in their rotation. One thing the Astros can promise Prior is that whenever he feels ready to return to the majors, their will be a spot in the rotation. That was one more thing the Cubs could not commit to.

I don't like this either, but it isn't surprising. My guess is the deal will offer Prior a low base like 1.5-2 million and then incentive levels based on the number of starts he makes. The risk/reward makes more sense for a team like the Astros because they don't have any better options.

If it's only a one year, I'm not going to be too upset. I still don't think he pitches before June 1, and it's not likely he helps the Astros much this year.

If Prior was a real man, he'd go play in the independent leagues to prove he just plays for the love of the game. And then he'd donate all his paychecks to orphans. Or Cubs fans.

And this is awesome.

5 years from now. . . . .

Joe Astro Fan: Guys, I'm telling you. If Prior can come back healthy, watch out! This is gonna be our year!

C'mon, UM... did you really just post his line from 2003? Are people here aware that 2008 is around the corner, and that he's coming off major shoulder surgery?

If he comes close to repeating this line by 2010, I will tattoo a cardinals jersey on my upper body, complete with a #15 on the back.

It's a slap in the face to the Cubs fans that idolized him. You know the people that paid for the tickets, bought his jersey, etc. The city of Chicago and Cubs fans made him rich - and we've been waiting (and paying) for a long time for him to get healthy. If he wanted to repay a little bit of what he's been given by all of us he could have taken a two-year incentive laden deal. How about a little loyalty? If he comes back in the 2nd half of 08 pitching for another team in the same division it only magnifies things. Take your smug expressions and get out of town Mark.
