Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Swisher...

I'm just surprised nobody has mentioned how he's essentially Adam Dunn-lite.

He's cheaper and has a much more favorable contract.

swisher is also a better defender than Dunn. And can play multiple positions well.

On another note, Hudson seems to have become a much better offensive player than he was in the past. The D back even had him hitting third for a portion of last season. So who knows what kind of season we'll see from him next year. What we do know is that he is a great defender... could he play short?

The Padres are moving closer to a trade for a pitcher, perhaps for either Mark Prior or Josh Towers.

Towers should pay the Padres for a chance to pitch in San Diego. He'd likely make it back as a free agent next winter. Both Prior and Towers are candidates to be non-tendered, though at the moment, it looks like it won't come to that for either.

looks like Swisher played a lot of center field last year how did he look out there?

Pretty bad, but not Ryan Braun bad. Think -15 or so over a full season.

here's a thought...lets keep prior jim

blah

i am not looking forward to the new season [-(

What do Prior and next year have to do with one another? He won't be healthy until midseason and that's still a pretty big if. If prior won't sign a 2 year deal, I say get what you can for him now when at least there might be a little competition for him.

I've been full-on about getting Nick Swisher forever. I think I have posts from last year talking about checking him out. See, when people said 'What's not to like about Crawford" and I didn't really feel like he was an ideal fit - uh, Swisher is pretty much an ideal fit.

He's had a 35 HR season playing in Oakland. He's had a 100 walk season. I don't think it's crazy to talk about this guy pulling out a few 1.000 OPS seasons or near it. Plus you know how a lot of the casual fans love a feel good story, earlier in the year he grew out his hair and cut it for cancer patients.

Lou wants a lefty he can leave in there against lefties? Swisher. Ha. I think that works.

Someone asked if he was defensively bad, the answer is not that clear to me as the metrics point in different directions, somebody had enough faith in him to give him significant time in center field, which may mean nothing, but still, I doubt we'd be crying about his defense.

We're talking about good fits? Accepting there is no Brian Giles 1999-2003 or Bobby Abreu 1999-2005, and Jeremy Hermida and Nick Markakis are not available, Swisher is as close to a fantastic fit as we could hope for. I would trade Hill. I think it would be a good deal for both teams, Rich Hill could be put up numbers like Barry Zito in 2003 and 2005 in that park, I think.

I couldn't be persuaded to trade Rich Hill with anything else of big value though. I'm more gung-ho about Hill than most, maybe because on another message board I post on he's routinely lumped in with guys like Noah Lowry and Chuck James (who would be toast pitching their home games at Wrigley), I like the way he improved his G/F ratio the second half.

I might do Hill for Swisher, but I'd rather sign Fukudome and keep Hill.

Swisher > Fukudome

Swisher << Fukudome/ Hill

Or maybe Marshall for Hamilton and have a Hamilton/Murton platoon.

I thought the only reason they put him in center was to play Cust in RF have Piazza at DH ergo not putting Piazza behind the dish. Not that I care I own him my keeper league and I like his CF eligibility

Prior to SD

Chase Headley, Sean Marshall, and Matt Murton to Oak

Swisher in RF for the Cubs.

Done.

I'd rather trade Marshall and Veal for Josh Hamilton and save Murt and Prior to include in a deal for a SS or SP upgrade.

Discussions between the Padres and Cubs on a Mark Prior deal have cooled.

The Cubs reportedly set an asking price that the Padres were unwilling to match. Perhaps they'll talk again if Prior survives the non-tender deadline.

Well, Jim has step #1 down...asking too much.

Jim Caple on BBTN just said that the Cubs would offer Prior a contract, not sure on the $, but if he does go on the trading block the Rangers would be #1 in line to get him, then the Padres.

Interesting.

That would have been Buster Olney who is better at stats then trade rumors. What would the Rangers give for Prior that would be worth anything? Wilkerson?

Wilkerson could be had without giving anything up. He's a FA.

If Hendry insists on trading Prior and having De Rosa as a super sub could Blalock handle second base, I know the Rangers had him taking grounders there at one point. It gets another lefty bat in the lineup that gets on base and hits for power.

I'm a bit surprised taht the Padres rumors didn't end up with Prior being traded for garbage, although I guess there is still time. If he does end up geting traded, I'd bet that it will be for junk. I don't see how anyone is going to trade much of value for Prior. What contending team is willing to give up significant value in a trade for a risky player who's been branded as mentally weak?

Prior+ to the Rangers for Blalock

Send Blalock to the Pirates for McLouth and Marte

From what I've read, Pittsburgh doesn't want to block 3b from Neil Walker. As cheaply as this organization is run, I wouldn't find that too shocking.
