I'm going to crack up laughing at Hendry when Roberts puts on his Indians uniform next week.

Because he will have proven that he can't even work a deal with his former employer for a guy who doesn't want to be in Baltimore, for a guy who Baltimore would rather not pay to play for Baltimore, and to a team that can use all the help they can get.

I wonder if there is any chance the Cubs can convince the O's to take Tim Lahey over Jose Ceda? :-k

Can Lahey be traded?

He can, but the team trading for him would have to keep him on the 25-man roster all year just like the Cubs would or else lose him back to his original team (Toronto, if I recall correctly). Remember, just last year the Cubs picked Josh Hamilton in the Rule 5 draft, then traded him to Cincinnati.

Thanks for the explanation, I knew there was some restrictions in trading him.

Seems to me that Andy and Hendry have denied that things are "heating up" or stuff like that. That doesn't mean that status-quo doesn't exist, and that status-quo will lead to a deal in due time.

1. Andy commented some time back about having waited, why not spend some time scouting spring training to see if anybody has changed and to get further scouting info? That makes sense to me. Why not wait to see who's healthy, if anybody shows signs of improvement, etc.. I don't believe a guy like Veal was even a non-roster invite, so if they want to look at cats like Veal or Huseby or guys like that, they may need to wait even longer. Not sure how look the minor leaguers have actually been in camp or throwing.

2. I don't know the date, but at some time during March teams can park injured guys onto the 60-day DL. That day has not yet arrived, and will not for a while I don't think. Orioles have a full 40-man roster, and if they add roster guys that will bump some off. But if they wait until the 60-day DL is usable, they might be able to avoid 40-man problems by parking some of their guys (like the pitcher they got for Tejada) onto the 60-day DL.

For all we know, hendry has provided a pool of candidates. And Andy has said, "We aren't ready to make a deal with that pool right now. We'd like X, Y, and Z added to the pool. Call me back if you want to sweeten the pool. Or I'll call you back if I decide to say yes given the pool you've offered. In the meantime, we'll look around, maybe scout some of your guys. If we do end up deciding to go for it, it won't be until we've looked everybody over this spring to make sure they're healthy and to reconsider our scouting evaluations. And if we do end up deciding to go for it, it probably won't be until the 60-day DL thing opens up some 40-man spots. Anyway, I'll call you back if I decide we want to go for it; you call me back if you want to improve the pool. Until one of us is ready to move one way or the other, no need to talk."

It has been widely reported that Jim and Andy actually did reach an agreement and then Peter Angelos stepped in and did what he does best, he got involved.

Also, would someone please, please, please, show me just one article besides Ken Rosenthal's in the beginning of January that even remotely sites any credible source of the Indians saying they are interested at all? Because all I can find is the Rosenthal piece, which is two months old, and there hasn't been one whisper anywhere else that I can find of them still having interest.

When I look now, all I find is knucklehead O's fans making this junk up in forums. Someone please link an article or real rumor to this somewhere. Of course, now that I've said this, the Indians are tayloring Roberts' Indians jersey as we speak probably.

IMHO that would be fine with me, I'm tired of MacPhail holding a ransom over us. Let's just move on, I'd much rather see Hendry go after Chone Figgins.

Eww. No thanks on Chone Figgins.

I really don't know the seriousness of discussions between Cleveland and Baltimore. But, until a deal is done, any one of the other 28 teams out there could swoop in with a better offer to get the deal done. I'm not saying Hendry should give up the farm for Roberts, but the longer this drags out, the more likely someone will do just that.

Not that I wanted Ivan Rodriguez when he was a free agent, but when the Cubs and one other team were casually tossing figures at Pudge, nothing really excited him to the point of rushing into a signing. Florida came out of nowhere and gave him a contract offer he couldn't refuse.

Detroit kind of did the same thing with Cabrera. The Dodgers and Angels were only showing casual interest in Cabrera, and both teams really would have loved to have him and Detroit basically made a phone call and the deal was done. It's like they came out of nowhere.

In a broader sense, does anyone else feel this image captures perfectly what it's like to be a Cubs fan?

It does seems that Charlie Brown's shirt should have Cubs written on it.

Heard a rumor this morning from some guy named Lovie saying that the trade between the Cubs and Orioles will only happen if some guy named Brett Favre were to retire.

I know all the cool kids are Hendry bashing, but if he is finding difficulties dealing with the Angelos owned Orioles, that puts him in the same category as 27 other MLB general managers. The Bedard traded was all but finished at least 5 different times over the span of 2 months, and the Orioles REALLY wanted to get rid of him.

Roberts is still and Oriole

I'd put money on him moving.

That depends. Does Hendry like Roberts or does he like him like him. I knew watching "Hey Arnold" with the kids would do me proud some day.
