Lou's comments regarding Pie on today's broadcast were interesting. He said Pie had separated himself from Fuld as far as CF is concerned; but at the end of the interview he reminded Len and Bob, "we are going to be starting a young guy at catcher and we will probably be starting a young guy in center".

Would it be too much to read into that as Pie still being a possibility to be traded rather than being "untouchable"?

A Cubs fan posted this on OH earlier today. He could be making it up though. Anybody hear this?

FWIW...The Cubs Asst Gm, Randy Bush, was on Talking Baseball (ESPN 1000 in Chicago) this morning and said there was not going to be a trade. Could be posturing, could be true who knows. Bruce Levine then said the Cubs have made 7 or 8 different offers to MacPhail since December and MacPhail seems to change his mind each time on what is acceptable and whether or not he will even trade Roberts. Levine went on to say the Cubs FO is very frustrated with MacPhail's actions.

It wouldn't surprise me, one bit.

I heard the comments and I didn't think much of the "probably". I did like that he said Pie had distanced himself.

Well, in fairness it's likely that MacPhail is as frustrated with his boss as the Cubs are with him. I mean the man obviously can't take a crap without approval. Completely and totally ridiculous way to run a ballclub.

I think the Angelos stuff is a bunch of garbage. A couple of crappy radio reporters say that Angelos might be involved just because it's the trendy thing to say. Plenty of people have confirmed that Macphail has full control. This strategy of continously hollding out worked with Bavasi in the Bedard, and that's why MacPhail is doing it again. The talks have been going on for 3 months now, and Hendry hasn't cut talks off. What does that say? It says that AM can continue to hold out knowing that Hendry won't walk away. It's annoying and frustrating, but it worked with Bavasi, so why not do it to Hendry? Hendry has shown in the pas he'll overpay to get what he wants. I think MacPhail has a set price in his mind (probably a price way too high for Roberts) and won't budge unless Hendry caves and decides to overpay. If not, AM can just hold onto him and wait for someone to overpay.

He's running the risk of waiting too long and getting even less, though.

First of all, Angelos makes the late Bill Wirtz look like Mark Cuban. The guy is a disgrace. But I won't even get started on that.

Here's why MacPhail is walking a dangerous line if you are an O's fan. O's fans can kid themselves all they want, if there was anyone else bidding for Roberts than the Cubs you can bet your lunch money that they would have been public, or a deal would have been done by now. It's not a good idea to figure that with Bavasi AM did good by holding out and figure the same result here. There was a lot of suitors for Bedard. The Cubs for one, the Indians, and basically anyone who lost out on Santana.

I have two trains of thought on this...

1) If the Cubs offer is so disrespectful, or such a slap in the face to the O's, then don't you think other teams that were even quietly interested would think the same thing, make a better offer and snag Roberts by now? It doesn't take 3 months for another team to see what's been said about these discussions between Hendry and AM and figure that the Cubs are lowballing, if in fact, they agree that the Cubs are lowballing.

2) There is no other suitor for Roberts, and MacPhail is putting all his eggs in one basket hoping Hendry blinks. I don't think he will.

In the end, I think you are going to see that either the O's will be sitting on opening day with a guy in Roberts who is not happy to be part of a rebuild or you will see Roberts on the Cubs at Hendry's price.

We have a game of chicken going on between friends; Hendry and McP. Call it pride, call it stubbornness, but Hendry rarely doesn't get his target. But in all honest, I say make the best offer you can make (Gallagher or Marshall, Cedeno/Patterson, Veal) and tell Balt that this is "our" final offer. Don't accept, and we'll look elsewhere. Force MacPhail into blinking. People have to remember that Baltimore hasn't really had any other interests in Roberts other then the Cubs. The burp with the Indians, was simply to drum up interests. Bottomline: Hendry needs to put the cards on the table, and force the O's into a decision, one way or another.

#1 The Cubs offer isn't a low ball offer. They're already offering too much for Roberts, IMO.

#2 I'm certain there are other teams interested in Roberts, but if they aren't desperate enough to give up 4-5 players for him then why even call the O's. They think Roberts is Rogers Hornsby or something.

Let DeRo play 2B and Cedeno play SS! (I still have hope for Cedeno!!!!)

False.

Spill it.

I've heard of one faint rumor with the Indians. I heard the Mets considered Roberts before reupping with Castillo. And if memory serves me correctly, the Padres had some interests in Roberts. Plus the M's considered Roberts. Outside of those teams, the interest in Robert, atleast publically, have been lukewarm.

So again, fill in why you think it's "false?"

He doesn't have any inside info.

What is "inside info"? If you exchange e-mails with somebody like Bruce Miles (I don't, that's just an example) and he tells you things that aren't printed, does that mean you have "inside info". I don't think so, but whatever. "Inside info" is a term used for kids who want to act like they know stuff and feel special, kind of like a couple of the guys on OH. I shouldn't have even brought it up, but you can continue to make assumptions if you want.

Whether people like Pie right now or not. Now is the time to give him his chance to establish himself as an MLB center fielder. If he fails, the Cubs will be able to make a trade to fix the position. Pie is a capable defensive outfielder. If he ends up not being able to hit there are options available. I think it's time to see if all the hype can come to fruition.
